THE WEEK IN CHESS 285 24th April 2000 by Mark Crowther

1) Introduction

My thanks to Kristianus Liem, John Henderson, crochess.com, Yin Hao andPierre Bourget, Cannes Chess Club, Anton Gubanov (Ruschess.com), MikhailGolubev (Chess Sector), Thomas Heine Bech, John Donaldson, NicolasLavallée, José Mariano Acosta, Alejandro Nogueira, AntonioCastello, Günther van den Bergh, Stewart Reuben and all those who helpedwith this issue.

The Japfa Classic in Indonesia should be a very interesting event. JuditPolgar has taken an early lead but with a number of weaker players in the fieldthe stronger players will have to play for some wins. Michael Adams won the 2ndRedbus Knockout in Southport. There is also news of some excellent events inthe near future.

2) Japfa Classic

The Japfa Classic International Chess Tournament 2000 is the strongestever in Indonesia. The Category 16 event takes place in the Bali Beach Hotel.It runs 22nd April to 2nd May 2000. The total prize money US$56,500. Afterthere is an open tournament (May 3-May 11, 2000) with total prize money ofUS$20,000. My thanks to Kristianus Liem for his help.

This should be a very interesting tournament with a real mix ofabilities amongst the players. Can Karpov win his first high category event ina long time, or will it be FIDE Champion Alexander Khalifman, Judit Polgar, JanTimman or Yasser Seirawan? At the bottom, Ruben Gunawan is officially thelowest rated player in the event. In reality Zaw Win Lay's rating of 2633should probably be around 2333, it will be his chance to prove he isn'tover-rated.

The previous strongest chess event in Asia was the double round robinMarlboro-Loyola Challenge in 1976 in Manila, Philippines, with the Karpov 2695,Ljubojevic 2620, Browne 2585 and Torre 2505. Torre went on to win that eventwith 4,5 point from 6 rounds.

3) Redbus Tournament

The Redbus elite knockout tournament ran April 21st-24th 2000 alongsidethe Southend Easter Congress. The time control was 100 minutes plus 30 secondsper move for the whole game with one round per day and two games per round.Matches tied at 1-1 were be decided by two ten minute games and was followed bysudden death blitz if necessary. The prize fund was £7,400 with the eightfirst round losers receiving 200 pounds, second round losers receiving 400pounds, semi-finalists took home 600 pounds.

Michael Adams beat Bogdan Lalic in the final to win the event but thetwo finalists split 3000 pounds 1600 pounds to Adams 1400 pounds to Lalic asthe match went to speed chess.

In the first round of the 10 min quickplay, Lalic beat Davies 2-0; Emmsbeat Wells 1.5-0.5; Rowson 1-1 Miles (first two drawn, Rowson going throughafter winning first 5-min sudden death); Turner 2-0 Flear; Speelman 1-1 Ward(first two 10min drawn; Speelman going through after winning the fifth 5-minsudden death).

4) Pula, Croatia Zone 1.2

ZONE 1-2 tournament for the FIDE World Chess Championships tookplace inPula (CRO) 11th-22nd April 2000. There were seven qualifying places availablefrom this 11 round Swiss system event. The qualifiers were, Beliavsky, Psakhis,Sutovsky (who started with 0/2!), Ilia Smirin, Ivan Zaja, Emir Dizdarevic andChristopher Lutz. Nikola Mitkov tied with qualifiers on 6.5 but was to be theonly player on this score to miss out on qualification due to an inferiortie-break (sum of opponents ratings).

5) Karpov-Ye Jiangchuan

After playijng Xie Jun in Guangzhou China Anatoly Karpov moved on toShenyang (originally it was to be Dalian), China April 16th-19th to play YeJiangchuan beating him 3-1. The first two games were drawn (April 16th-17th2000 normal timerates). Then there were two rapidplay games (April 19th 2000)Karpov won on time in the 1st rapidplay game (game incomplete) and played agood game to win with white in the final game. 7) Oakham GM

The Oakham GM tournament took place 11th-19th April 2000, OakhamSchool, Rutland, Leicestershire. The event was Category VII with an ELO averageof 2406 (GM norm 7, IM norm 5). You can read John Henderson daily reports forTWIC on the main pages.

There was a close finish in the final round with Nicholas Pert missing aprobable win against Neil McDonald only drawing. He took first place but missedout on a GM norm. Daniel Gormally faired even worse missing several promisingcontinuations and he went on to lose, missing first and a GM norm. Irina Krushdid win her final game and shared 3rd with Chris Ward. On the way she scoredher second IM norm (the first being in the Koltanowski International in SanFrancisco in 1999).

8) Aivars Gipslis

Latvian Grandmaster Aivars Gipslis died on April 13th 2000 at the age of63 in a Berlin hospital. Born 8th February 1937 he was an almost exactcontemporary of fellow Latvian Mikhail Tal. Gipslis was many times LatvianChampion and became a GM in 1967. He came second in the Alekhine Memorial of1967 (1st Stein 11, 2nd-5th Bobotsov, Gipslis, Smyslov, Tal 10, 6th-8thBronstein, Portisch, Spassky 9.5 (Geller, Keres, Najdorf, Petrosian andGligoric also played). A fuller tribute will follow in next week's edition.

9) Ukranian Team Championships

The Ukranian Team Championships took place in Alushta, April 10-18,2000. There were 14 teams in this 9 round event with Juridical Academy Kharkovtaking the title. 16 year old Ruslan Ponomariov scored 7/8 on top board for 3rdplaced A.V.Momot Regional Donetsk Chess Club. 10) St Petersburg Open Women's Championship

Danish Chess Championships 2000 took place April 15th-24th 2000 inAalborg, Denmark. Sadly Bent Larsen has had to withdraw from the event due toill health. Curt Hansen won with 6/9 ahead of Peter Heine Nielsen on 5.5. Mythanks to Thomas Heine Bech.

12) Val Zemitis International

John Donaldson reports: The Mechanics Institute hosted the Val ZemitisInternational April 5-14. The IM norm event, had IM Cela (2527) as top seed,was Category 4 (2340).

The tournament officially ended on Friday April 14th, but there were twopostponed games left as 15-year-old Vinay Bhat had school exams during thetournament. Vinay Bhat won both these games and with them the tournament, healso scored his third and final IM norm. On Saturday he beat fellow teenagerDavid Pruess to move up to plus two then on Sunday he won his final gameagainst IM Guillermo Rey who was leading with plus three It was a hard-foughttournament with almost 2/3rds of the games finishing decisively. It had fourplayers under 20 (Bhat, Pruess, Reizniece and Akopian). The final game Bhat-Reyis now available.

The tournament was named after the Latvian-American master Val Zemitisof Davis, California, who celebrated his 75th birthday during the event. Mr.Zemitis is the author of "The Unknown Tal" , the first book to appear (circa1960) on the Latvian great. Zemitis is one of the great popularizers of chessin the United States. At one time he subscribed to over 200 chess magazines andpublished extensive lists of journals and chess book dealers which he madeavailable free of cost to interested parties all over the world. Garry Koshnitsky Memorial

The Garry Koshnitsky Memorial Australian Chess Festival is being heldthis year from 7 June to 13 August in memory of arguably the most importantfigure in Australian chess history who died last year at the age of 91. Thefestival commences with the Surfers Paradise Parkroyal International which isbeing held at a five star venue on Queensland's Gold Coast in order to giveAustralian players the opportunity to play top class overseas opposition. Thenine round Swiss event features GMs Nikolic, Ftacnik, Rogers and Johansen andruns from 7-17 June. Whilst the Prize Fund is a modest $5,000 the playingconditions are superb and the hotel is situated in one of the world's greatholiday destinations. Entry fees are IMs and GMs FOC, players rated 2300+ $150,2200+ $250, 2100+ $350, 2000+ $450. Overseas players are half price and thereare discounts for payment by 15/3/00 ($50) and 15/4/00 ($25). There are veryspecial room rates at the Parkroyal only available to competitors ($75 single,$37.50 twin share).

13th Ciudad de León Tournament

The 13th Ciudad de León Tournament will again use the "advancedchess" format (players will be allowed to use a computer for databases and aplaying program). The competitors will be Anand, Shirov, Judith Polgar andIllescas. The event will run June 1st-5th 2000 (playing days: June 2ndShirov-Illescas 2 game match, June 3rd Anand-Polgar 2 game match, June 3rd,final. The venue is the Junta de León” building, with the openingceremony in the Conde Luna Hotel and the closing ceremony and Judit Polgarsimul at the University.

There are two events in Kobuleti (Georgia, Adjaria a health resort onthe Black Sea not far from Batumi).
