‘We do not support a referendum’: Malema warns Cape Independence group

The Cape Independence movement has grabbed a fair few headlines in this election cycle – but EFF leader Julius Malema is having none of it.

As advocates for Cape Independence – a movement that seeks to make the Western Cape its own country – continue to spread their message in the run-up to the 2021 Local Elections, it was perhaps only a matter of time before Julius Malema shared his opinion on the issue – and the EFF leader isn’t impressed.

Will there be a vote on Cape Independence?

The Cape Independence Advocacy Group (CIAG) has gained a lot of attention in recent weeks, and even handed over a formal request to President Ramaphosa about holding a referendum in the Western Cape, allowing provincial residents to vote on whether they should secede from the rest of South Africa.

AfriForum and the Freedom Front Plus are amongst the high-profile supporters backing the ‘right to self-determination’ in the south-west, and the DA has also suggested that the Western Cape should get ‘devolved powers’ from the National Government. However, the proposal is soundly rejected by many other South Africans.

Julius Malema shares views on Western Cape secession

Julius Malema became the latest dissenting voice on Tuesday evening. He argued that the Western Cape ‘belongs to South Africa’, and made reference to the role it played in the early days of colonialism.

“There is no referendum that we support that is going to take place. That province belongs here in this country. That is the place they use to enter, these colonialists and their ancestors, to come and undermine us here. The discussion now is on how we unite Africa, not how do we further divide Africa through imaginary and artificial borders.”| Julius Malema

MALEMA: When we take over South Africa, we are taking Western Cape.
