          The market indicator, also known as BSE S&P Sensex, is the free-float market-weighted stock market index of thirty companies listed on the BSE. It was launched in 1986. The term Sensex is derived from 'sensitive' and 'index.'

          The constituents of the bellwether index include HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, Infosys, L&T, Tata Consultancy Services, ITC, and Bharti Airtel among others.

          BSE Sensex FAQs

          The market indicator, also known as BSE S&P Sensex, is the free-float market- weighted stock market index of thirty companies listed on the BSE. The index assigns a base value of 100.

          Sensex represents stock performance of thirty firms listed on the BSE. It is calculated by free-float market capitalisation method and has a base value of 100.

          Sensex as of August 2024 trades between 80,900 – 81,000 level. The index recently hit an all-time high of 82,129.49.

          Constituents of BSE Sensex index: HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, Infosys, L&T, TCS, ITC, Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever, Bajaj Finance, NTPC, Tata Motors, Sun Pharmaceuticals, Maruti Suzuki, HCL Tech, Power Grid Corporation of India, Tata Steel, Titan, Ultratech Cement, Asian Paints, Adani Ports, IndusInd, Nestle, Tech Mahindra, JSW Steel and Bajaj Finserv.           Sensex is calculated by the free-float market capitalisation method from September 1, 2003, doing away with full market capitalisation

          Free-float refers to the portion of shares issued by a company that are available for trade to the general public, excluding promoters/government holding and other shares that are not available for trading.

          Sensex = (Free flat market capitalisation of 30 companies / Base market capitalisation) * Base value of index

          Sensex and Nifty are the stock market indices of BSE and NSE, respectively, showcasing the overall behaviour of equity markets. While Sensex represents thirty sample stocks, Nifty represents fifty stocks. These indices consist of large, liquid stocks listed on the stock exchanges of different sectors and indicate their performance.

          NSE has higher market capitalisation and trading volume as compared to BSE

          Nifty covers 50 actively traded stocks, while BSE Sensex covers 30. Nifty has higher liquidity and has a base value of 1000. Sensex has low volume and liquidity with a base value of 100. Nifty is operated by managed by NSE Indices Ltd (formerly known as India Index Services and Products Ltd), and BSE is operated by itself.
