Brosnan to receive an honorary OBE

This article is more than 21 years old

Pierce Brosnan, the current James Bond avatar, is to receive an honorary OBE from the Queen. The award, for services to drama and the British film industry, is honorary because Brosnan is Irish.

Britain's foreign secretary Jack Straw announced the award, praising Brosnan's long career on stage and screen, saying: "In his portrayal of 007 in the last four Bond films, he has added style and glamour to the image of Britain overseas. But he has also worked very hard behind the scenes in supporting an array of charitable causes."

Brosnan, who is 50, joins eminent company with the honour. Sean Connery and Roger Moore, his two major predecessors in the 007 role, have both received knighthoods, Sir Roger just last month.
