Carlton makes an unhappy Discovery

This article is more than 26 years old

ONdigital, the terrestrial television broadcaster, unveiled a long-awaited reshuffle of its services yesterday with the announcement that it is to replace Carlton programming with channels from the American broadcaster, Discovery.

From February, ONdigital will carry Discovery Kids and Wings. Kids will carry blocks of pre-school series, along with science, technology and entertainment programming.

Wings will concentrate on factual entertainment about flying, with programming on adventure, space, military and aviation issues.

The deal represents a significant breakthrough for ONdigital. Chief executive Stuart Prebble has been keen to strengthen the company's channel line-up, and Discovery is one of the top brands in factual programming.

Mr Prebble said: "I have made no secret that one of my key priorities is to constantly upgrade ONdigital's content." He added that the company's recent success in winning carriage of Sky Sports 2 had also been a priority. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Discovery channels will be launched on ONdigital, but are not exclusive to it, and rivals including satellite broadcaster BSkyB are likely to enter talks for them shortly.

ONdigital is dropping Carlton World and Kids. Select is also to go, to be replaced by extending schedules for the Food Network. Carlton will be left with just two digital channels, CFN and Carlton Cinema.
