Shelley is living a carefree life until a rival gets her tossed out of the Playboy Mansion. With nowhere to go, fate delivers her to the sorority girls from Zeta Alpha Zeta. Unless they can sign a new pledge class, the seven socially clueless women will lose their house to the scheming girls of Phi Iota Mu. In order to accomplish their goal, they need Shelley to teach them the ways of makeup and men; at the same time, Shelley needs some of what the Zetas have—a sense of individuality. The combination leads all the girls to learn how to stop pretending and start being themselves.

This week, new releases were practically non-existent on the DVD sales chart. In fact, the best selling releases to make their debut on the chart were the late releases fromlast week. The best seller overallthis week wasThe Dark Knight with 1.69 million units and $37.11 million in consumer retail spending for the week, giving it just a hair under 12.00 million units sold and $252.82 million in sales after three. This week is a confusing one on the home market as there are DVDs coming out on Tuesday the 16th, as usual, and on Friday the 19th, and Sunday the 21st as well. While there are a number of great releases that are spread out over three days,Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is the best on any day, and worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week.More...

First some updates onWednesday's numbers. Due to Columbus Day, we were relying on studio estimates instead of final numbers, and while they were mostly accurate, they were not entirely accurate. TheRussia film,Admiral (Koltchak), did indeed top the charts with $12.51 million on 1,223 screens in 2 markets over the weekend and $13.31 million in total. Meanwhile,Eagle Eye added $10.88 million on 3,030 screens in 38 markets for a still early total of $29.41 million.Mamma Mia! continues its quest for $400 million with $8.37 million on 3,713 screens in 46 markets for a total of $390.72 million. We had a new winner on top of the international charts as theRussia film,Admiral (Koltchak) opened in its native market with $11.35 million and $1.47 million in neighboring Ukraine. Its total weekend revenue of $12.82 million came on 1,088 screens, giving the film an impressive per screen average of $11,783. It has to be considered a hit already, but how well it holds on will determine how fast the studio will recoup its $20 million production budget.More...

It was not a good weekend at the box office with just one of the four new releases beating expectations, and even then it was by just a rounding error. Overall box office receipts were $88 million over the weekend, which was down 13% from last week. More importantly, it was down 9% from the same weekendlast year, which was not expected. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind 2007, but at a margin of just $6.98 billion to $7.04 billion, and a strong fall and holiday box office would be enough to catch up.More...

Four films opened wide this weekend, and all four finished in the top four, which is the first time that's happened in more than ayear and a half. The strength of the new releases helped the overall box office bounce back, as it was up 49% from last weekend at $101 million. More importantly, it was up more than 28% from the same weekendlast year, which ended a seven-week losing streak. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind, but the gap was closed somewhat with 2007 leading with $6.92 billion to $6.87 billion.More...

There are four wide releases this week, and the odds are that all four will place in the top four on the chart. However, there are some disagreements among analysts on which films have a shot at topping the chart, and which will struggle. But (almost) everyone agrees that the overall box office will grow from last weekend, and most agree it will grow from the same weekendlast year.More...

After the summer comes the fall, which was certainly true this past weekend.Bangkok Dangerous and rest of the market only pulled in just $68 million over the weekend, which is 45% lower than last weekend. However, while that's a huge drop-off, more importantly it is nearly 15% lower than the same weekend last year and theninth weakest weekend since 2000, and worst weekend in five years. With the Summer season over, Hollywood started the Fall with a soft weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.Bangkok Dangerous is expected to win the weekend with an estimated $7.8 million, just ahead ofTropic Thunder's $7.5 million, in its fourth weekend in release. The last time no movie topped $10 million in a weekend wasApril, 2007 whenDisturbia topped the charts with a shade over $9 million. To find a number one movie that earned less than $8 million, one has to go back exactly five years, toSeptember, 2003, whenDickie Roberts: Former Child Star topped with just $6.66 million.More...

CanTropic Thunder do it? CanTropic Thunder matchThe Dark Knight's winning streak? ... Probably not, but it has a shot, thanks to the weakness in the new releases this week (or should that say new release?), and the historically slow post-Labor Day weekend.More...

The Dark Knight did what few films in the past decade were able to do, lead the box office charts for four weeks in a row. NowTropic Thunder is one weekend away from tying that mark. However, it was able to win this weekend thanks to weakness in the new releases, which caused the box office to slump. From Friday to Sunday the industry brought in $98 million, which was 8% lower than last weekend and 17% lower than the same weekend last year. Over four days, $124 million was earned, which was again 17% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 fell further behind $6.67 billion to $6.73 billion, but that is still less than a 1% difference and certainly not an insurmountable lead.More...

Labor Day long weekend is the final weekend of summer, but far from ending on a high note, it is arguably the slowest long weekend of the year. And this year it looks to be no different, at least in terms of box office numbers. In terms of new releases, well, that's a another story with four movies opening wide, and another expanding wide. It is very unlikely that they will all succeed; in fact, it is more likely that they will all bomb. This makes it very difficult to predict which new release will come out on top, if any do.More...

Summer is winding down and the overall box office numbers show that quite clearly. Over the weekend, $106 million worth of tickets were sold, which is 15% lower than last weekend. On the other hand, it is a mere 1.3% lower than the same weekend last year, which continues the month-long slump. However, while 2008 is behind 2007's pace, it is by just 0.5% at $6.50 billion to $6.53 billion.More...

When it comes to our weekly box office prediction contest, we usual pick the obvious number one film as the target film. When there is no obvious number one, we usually pick the film that is opening the widest. However, this weekthat film is opening on Wednesday, so we are going withThe House Bunny instead. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office ofThe House Bunny. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday),without going over, will win a copy ofJust Add Water onDVD andAffinity onDVD, as well asPete Seeger: The Power of Song onDVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday),without going under, will also win a copy ofJust Add Water onDVD andAffinity onDVD, as well asThe Year My Parents Went on Vacation onDVD. Finally, one additional entrant will be chosen and they will win the third copy ofAffinity onDVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!More...

Summer usually comes screeching to a halt early in August, usually by the second weekend in August. However, this year we could have a $100 million hit opening each of the first three weeks. Or we could have no $100 million hits opening during the whole month. On the other end, there are a number of releases that probably looked good on paper, but failed to live up to their potential, not to mention a few that could not have looked good, even on paper.

This is clearly the best selling DVD of2008 having sold over 1 million units more thanWALL-E and nearly $70 million more in retail sales.More...

These three films were very close to the original figures, however, the rest of the top five was different than originally reported, starting with...More...

More importantly, it was up more than 28% from the same weekendlast year, which ended a seven-week losing streak. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind, but the gap was closed somewhat with 2007 leading with $6.92 billion to $6.87 billion.More...
