Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published inMedia Play News.
For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.
We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by theDigital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.
Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

It is a deceptively busy week on the home market, and not in a good way. There’s no one big release, at least not on DVD / Blu-ray, but there’s a sea of mediocrity this week. I’m not talking about quality here, but sales rank. There are a lot of films that wouldn’t even be filler during a normal week, but this week are selling well enough to be mentioned. There are several that are worth picking up, including limited releases likeBye Bye Germany andRevenge, classics likeThe Changeling, and even some Anime titles likeBig Fish & Begonia orTsuredure Children.Deadpool 2 is by far the biggest release of the week and I suspect theBlu-ray will be the Pick of the Week when it comes out, but I don’t want to give it that title until than. As a result, there’s no real winner this week. There were a lot that came close.More...

It is an incredibly slow week on the home market. Most of the films in the main list would be filler on even a below average week. The only real exception isReady Player One, which did earn better than expectedreviews, but it’s still not Pick of the Week material. There were a few actual contenders for that title, includingGravity Falls: The Complete Series andA Matter of Life and Death, but in the end, I went withIn the Mouth of Madness onBlu-ray.More...
