Phew! Now that all that is out of the way, I pretty much start every day on this Black Friday laptop deals live blog recommending the fantastic Microsoft Surface Laptop 13-inch, which is one of my favorite laptops ever.

Right now, several configurations and colorways are on sale across multiple retailers, starting with theMicrosoft Surface Laptop 13-inch in Platinum for just $549.99 at Best Buy andAmazon. This configuration only gets you 256GB storage, but if you opt for 512GB, you can also choose Ocean or Violet colorways for theMicrosoft Surface Laptop 13-inch for just $799.99 at Amazon.

OK, so for the next hour or so, I'm going to be talking about Windows non-gaming laptops, specifically, so I want to set out some helpful tips for what to look for in a great Windows laptop.

Processor -The processor in your laptop will make or break its utility, so make sure you're getting a current-gen or fairly recent chip in your laptop.

If you're unsure, you can Google the full product name of the processor, and you'll typically find an AMD, Intel, or Qualcomm specs page near the top of the results that will tell you more about the processor, including when it was released.

Try to avoid anything earlier than an Intel 12th-gen Intel processor (denoted by a model number starting with '12) or AMD Ryzen processors below the 7000-series.

Graphics -Unless you plan on PC gaming or doing a lot of creative content, the integrated graphics on modern chips will be more than enough for most needs. If you do plan on gaming heavily or doing professional-grade creative work, you're going to want to go for laptops with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 40- or 50-series GPU.

NPU - On-device AI is still in its relative infantcy, so to be honest, there aren't many things that you're going to need an NPU for that can't be done with other hardware on your device, so I really wouldn't worry about this particular spec right now.

Memory & storage- For most current Windows laptops, you're going to want a minimum of 16GB memory and 256GB SSD storage. If you plan on gaming heavily or working with a lot of media files, you should aim for 32GB memory and 1TB storage.

A key thing to consider for memory and storage configurations this Black Friday is that for many Windows laptops out there, you can actually upgrade a laptop's RAM and SSD storage, so if you see an attractive price on an underspeced memory and/or storage configuration for the laptop you want, see if these specs are upgradable.

If so, you can then buy the laptop at the discounted price and pick up larger capacity drives and memory kits to boost these specs to where you need them to be.

Key words to look for in laptops where memorycan't be upgraded are:
●memory listed as 'soldered' (meaning it is effectively welded to the motherboard, and so can't be replaced);
● the processor is anIntel Core Ultra 200V-series processor, so Intel Core Ultra 7258V, Intel Core Ultra 9288V, or similar, since system memory is packaged into the processor itself, so can't be upgraded.

For storage,any laptop with eMMC storage can't be upgraded with a new SSD, since the storage module is soldered to the motherboard directly.

It's also important to note thatright now, this is likely going to be more expensive then just configuring a laptop with higher memory and storage from the manufacturer or finding a higher-specced model given ongoing supply issues around RAM and SSD storage modules that are driving up prices significantly right now.

Operating system -At this point, most shoppers will have a preference for one OS over another, and so that should be one of your first considerations. However, I do want to note that Black Friday is a time of year when retailers try to offload alot of garbage inventory with poor specs. This is especially true of so-called Windows 11 S-mode laptops. These laptops are Microsoft's answer to the efficient and lightweight ChromeOS, but unfortunately, that answer simply isn't good enough.

While the price on a Windows 11 S-mode laptop will look attractive, they will typically have limited memory and storage capacities, making it very impractical to disable S-mode and use the full Windows 11 operationg system. You'll also be very constrained about what kind of apps you can install on the device, as local app installations through S-mode can only be done through the Microsoft Store.

To keep it simple: if you're looking to spend no more than $250/£250 on a new laptop,don't bother with Windows laptops, and instead opt for a Chromebook.

I'm looking forward to helping you find thebest laptop for your needs and budget this year, as a lot of you have emailed us for advice on how to get the best price on a new Windows laptop, MacBook, and Chromebook.

As most shoppers start to move from the window-browsing phase to making actual purchases over the next few days, I'll be sprinkling in buying advice for specific devices along with any new deals I find.

Of course, if you're buying a gaming laptop, you're almost certainly going to need a few extra bits and pieces - and chief among those is one of thebest gaming mice. Unless you exclusively play turn-based games (or you're a terrifying demon who somehow playsValorant with a touchpad), having a high-end mouse is always a good call for anyone playing games on a laptop.

With that in mind, let me introduce you to the fine work of TechRadar's own Lewis Maddison, who has compiled a handy list of thebest Black Friday gaming mouse deals. There are some great discounts on mice in both the US and UK, so be sure to check out that page if you're already planning on picking up a new laptop this holiday season.

When it comes to RTX 5060 gaming laptops, the best deal I've seen so far is over at Walmart, where you can get theMSI Cyborg 15 for $899 (was $1,199). Packing an Intel Core 7 240H and 16GB of high-speed DDR5 RAM along with that Nvidia GPU, it's a solid deal for a midrange gaming system.

It's worth noting, though, that this isn't the steepest discount I've seen on RTX 5060 gaming laptops this Black Friday sale season; the Cyborg 15 just happens to have a lower original retail price than much of the competition. For a bigger price cut, consider theHP Victus 15, now $949 (was $1,459) at Best Buy - a discount of more than $500!

Over on the gaming side of things, you can snap up theLenovo LOQ 15 for just $649 (was $1,099) at Best Buy - a solid deal on a gaming laptop that offers excellent build quality as well as a more thin and refined (read: not crammed with RGB LEDs) design that also includes a numpad - convenient for anyone who wants a gaming system that can pull double duty as a work laptop.

The RTX 5050 GPU in this laptop isn't the most powerful, however; while it should be sufficient for playing most games at a good framerate on the LOQ 15's Full HD display, serious gamers might be better served hunting for a laptop with an RTX 5060 or even 5070 graphics card instead.

Looking for a similarly affordable laptop but prefer a touchscreen on your laptop? Check out theLenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook, down to $149 (was $399) at Best Buy right now. It features a MediaTek Kompanio 520 processor and a Full HD touch display, with the pleasingly modern Abyss Blue colorway.

With another better-than-half-price deal, it looks to me like Best Buy could be the place to go for laptop discounts this Black Friday - though of course, the biggest deals will usually be reserved for the big day itself, so keep your eyes peeled across multiple retailers if you really want to snag the best possible discount.

If you're in the market for somethingridiculously cheap this Black Friday, I'd recommend avoiding Amazon - there are frankly tons of dodgy Windows laptops from Chinese brands that either don't list accurate specs or are simply underpowered and relying on shoppers not knowing the difference between, for example, an Intel N305 and an Intel Core 3 processor.

So, shoppers on the ultra-budget end of the scale should stick to reputable retailers like Walmart and Best Buy (or Currys and Scan, for our readers in the UK). With that in mind, thisHP Chromebook 14 is down to a staggeringly cheap $119 (was $329) at Best Buy - that's almost two-thirds off the original price, getting you a laptop that can handle simple everyday tasks for excellent value.

If you're more interested in a Windows 11 device, then mycolleague John has highlighted some Surface Pro 11 deals. This premium 2-in-1 device has finally wowed him with the latest model, and it's had some great price cuts ahead of Black Friday.

If you're after the absolute cheapest Black Friday has to offer, Best Buy has two Chromebooks at just $119: theAcer Chromebook 315 and theHP Chromebook 14-inch.

Both of these options have very similar specs, including an Intel Celeron N4500 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of eMMC storage, which is essentially the bare minimum spec I'd recommend for Chromebooks.

That said, they are still modern Chromebooks, so they offer surprising everyday performance even at this price point. You shouldn't think about using these for any sort of resource-intensive creative work or gaming, but they will get the job done when it comes to checking your email, browsing social media, and writing papers.

The port selections on offer are pretty similar, too, though the Acer Chromebook 315 is a better deal overall since you get a slightly bigger, higher-resolution screen, an extra USB-C port over the HP Chromebook, and a protective carrying case bundled in.

Amazon certainly has no shortage of gaming laptop deals. You can get theASUS Rog Strix G18 (2025) for $1,699.99 (was $1,999.99). This big screen gaming laptop comes equipped with an RTX 5060, Ryzen 9 7940HX, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, and a 1TB SSD.

And that's powering a beautiful 18inch, 2.5K display at 240Hz. Plus it's kitted with a full-size, customizable RGB keyboard and a nice large trackpad, though I imagine you'll want to pick up one of thebest gaming mice to pair with this laptop.

All for the lowest price I've ever seen it at on Amazon.

Over in the UK, I'm quite fond of thisAcer Nitro V15 deal for £849 (was £999).

Finding a decent budget gaming laptop for under £1,000 these days is increasingly tricky, so I'm pleased to see Currys selling this, which comes with a 13th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. The GPU is the very solid RTX 5060, which while not the most powerful, is plenty for playing modern games at 1080p. It can also use DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation to help maximise performance without pushing the price up.

If you're after a cheap Windows 11 laptop that's actually worth buying, I've just spotted this at Amazon in the US:

• Acer Aspire 14 AI Copilot+ PC:was $603 now $439.99

This is a great laptop for the price, and while it's not the cheapest Windows 11 laptop deal, thanks to its new Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD, it'll vastly outperform cheaper laptops with have only 4GB and an old CPU. In cases like this, it's worth spending a little bit more if you can, as you'll get a much better product.

While there have been some great laptop deals already this Black Friday, I have seen a worrying increase in laptop 'deals' for vastly underpowered devices. So, if you see a laptop on sale that has just 4GB of RAM and an older CPU that is supposed to run Windows 11 - stay clear, no matter how cheap it is.

With the way Windows is headed, getting a laptop with an up-to-date processor is more important than ever: mainly because Microsoft can't help itself when it comes to cramming more AI features into the operating system. Modern chips like Intel's Core Ultra and AMD's Ryzen AI lineups feature dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) for running local AI processes - and it's entirely possible that users without NPUs in their computers will find Windows becoming harder and harder to use effectively in the years to come.

Finding a great-value Windows laptop can be tricky during Black Friday; Amazon is frequently flooded with dodgy Chinese brands, and even reputable laptop makers tend to have some discounts that might look attractive but aren't really worth it.

On the other hand, there's gold to be found for those with a sharp eye: take thishalf-price HP Omnibook X Flip for just $429.99 (was $849.99) at Best Buy. Okay, it's technically a 49.4% discount, but don't @ me - saving $420 on this laptop is a stellar deal whichever way you slice it. A big question a lot of folks may have is whether to buy the new MacBook Pro with M5 chip or go for a (possibly) cheaper MacBook Pro with M4. Fortunately, I have some data to share to help you figure out which makes more sense for you.

Our lab recently tested the MacBook Pro 14-inch with M5 chip and retested the MacBook Pro 14-inch with M4, using the same CPU core configurations, though the M5 MacBook had 16GB of additional memory, and the results are rather telling.

As you can see, despite using the same process technology from TSMC to fabricate the M5 chip, Apple was able to squeeze some extra performance out of the M5 over the M4 that does actually make it worth spending a little extra (but nottoo much extra) if you find a great deal.

• Watch out for models that have poor storage even at a cut price
• Same for RAM: 8GB is ok but I'd say 16GB is better to have for longevity

Having professed my MacBook Air love, I do remember buying a Microsoft Surface Pro 5 back in the Black Friday sales a good handful of years ago. This laptop is fairly basic 1080p laptop with an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 8GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD, so it's not going to be a powerhouse, but it's great for everyday computing.

OK just found another great laptop deal in the US - theLenovo IdeaPad Slim 3X with Snapdragon X processor, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD for $449.99 (was $679.99) at Amazon.

This is the latest model and like many Lenovo laptops, it's solidly built and dependable. For under $500, this is an incredible deal.

I just checked in the UK, and sadly there's no similar price cuts for the M5 model there.

However, the previous model with the more powerfulM4 Pro chipis on sale at Amazon for £1,750 (was £1,999.99). That's not a bad saving at all, and it comes with a more powerful chip and more memory than the base M5 model, while not costing much more thanks to this 12% discount.

Well, well, well. Apple's brand new MacBook Pro with M5 has had a 10% price cut at Amazon! TheMacBook Pro 14-inch (M5) with 16GB memory and 512GB SSD is now $1,442, down from $1.599.

This is a very pleasant surprise as the laptop only released in October, so I wasn't expecting a price cut so soon!

If you want the MacBook Pro with M5 and larger 1TB storage, that has also had a slightly smaller price cut,from $1,799 to $1,649.99 at Amazon.

Over in the US, this deal just caught my eye:

The Surface Pro is a very stylish bit of kit - it's a 13-inch tablet that runs the full version of Windows 11, and thanks to its Snapdragon X Plus 10-core CPU and 16GB of RAM, it's an incredibly versatile device. By attaching a keyboard (either via Bluetooth of USB-C), you get essentially an extremely thin and light laptop (especially if you go for Microsoft's own Keyboard cover).

The biggest issue I have with the Surface Pro is how expensive it is, so this huge price cut is very welcome indeed!

Our Managing Editor, Core Tech (and original author of this guide) Matt Hanson gave this year's model4 out of 5 stars in his review, praising its impressive battery life, capable performance, and reasonable price tag (it's the same price as the M4 MacBook Pro).

It does lack Wi-Fi 7, and the design is largely the same as last year's, so if you're already on an M3 or M4 model, you probably don't have a major reason to upgrade. But if your Mac is a few years old now, and especially if you're still on an Intel-powered system, this Black Friday deal is a great chance to get some new hardware.

Finding a decent gaming laptop for under $1,000 is almost impossible these days - which is exactly why it's so important to take advantage of these Black Friday sales if you're thinking about upgrading your setup or buying a present for the holidays.

You get an RTX 5050, Intel Core 7-240H, 16GB of DDR5 RAM, and a 1 TB SSD in this configuration, along with a 120Hz WQXGA display. That's perfect for high FPS 1080p gaming, or 1440p with some tweaked settings. Plus, this is the lowest price I've ever seen for this laptop - this deal has never been so good.

Speaking of Chromebooks that hit the sweet spot between performance and affordability, the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go is on sale for $129.99 (was $299.99) at Amazon.

That's a solid 57% off, and while this Chromebook has its drawbacks (like a lackluster screen), it's hard not to recommend for the current asking price if you just need a cheap laptop to check your email, browse the web, and watch the occasional YouTube video.

To reiterate, this isn't going to offer you much computing power. I wouldn't even think about downloading a game on this machine. But what you are getting is a very affordable Chromebook that will get the job done time after time.

●Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Go (14-inch, Celeron N4500, 4GB DDR4, 64GB SSD):was $299.99now $129.99 at Amazon

A lot of people ask what the right specs for a Chromebook are, and that's honestly a matter of what you need it to do, but there are some important things about Chromebooks to keep in mind.

First, they aren't like Windows laptops or MacBooks, which both have much more robust operating systems. As such, they don't need nearly as much RAM, and a cheap Chromebook can get by with 4GB of memory, which is about what a Windows laptop or MacBook need just to load the OS itself.

Second, since Chromebooks are designed to really utilize cloud storage through G-Suite (Google Docs, Google Slides, etc), you really don't need much storage, so 64GB is usually more than enough for a cheap Chromebook.

Youcan get higher-specced Chromebooks, and they're great, but the real sweet spot for Chromebooks is when they're cheap and just powerful enough to do the basic computing tasks that make up most of what we do every day on our laptops.

OK, I absolutely HAD to bring you this one, since you rarely find a frickin' computer for less than $50, brand new.

But so it is with thisDell Chromebook 3120, on sale at Walmart for just $49.

I repeat, it's on sale for $49.

To be clear, this isnot going to be a great performer by any means. The chip in this laptop was discontinued a decade ago, and the 16GB storage is absolutely paltry. It might also not be able to update to more recent version of ChromeOS in the future, so the longevity of this device is questionable. But if you're looking for a dirt-cheap device to give to a child as a first laptop for very basic school work or you need something to stream movies while on the road, this laptop can absolutely do that.

Just make sure not to open up more than one or two Chrome tabs at a time.

●Dell Chromebook 3120 (11.6-inch 768p, Celeron N2840, 4GB DDR3L, 16GB eMMC):was $57now $49 at Walmart

Switching things up for you, I've got this incredible offer on anAsus Chromebook CX1505 for just $139 at Walmart, a roughly$81 savings.

Powered by an Intel Celeron N4500 processor, 4GB RAM, and 128GB storage on a 15.6-inch display, this laptop isn't going to win any performance championships, but our expert laptop reviewer, Lewis Maddison, said that "you’ll struggle to find a more generous offering in the Chromebook sector than the CX1505" when he reviewed it a few weeks ago, and that was before the hefty price cut.

While it's not going to be great for multitasking or medium-to-high-intensity workloads, for basic everyday computing needs, it's a stellar pick, especially for the price.

● Asus Chromebook CX1505 (15.6-inch, Celeron N4500, 4GB, 128GB):was $219.99now $139 at Walmart

While all of the Windows laptops below are fantastic picks, sometimes you just want something super simple, and for that, nothing beats a good Chromebook. I'm pulling together thebest Chromebook deals I can find right now to help you get the right device for your needs and budget.

When I reviewed theMicrosoft Surface Pro 11 last year, I was rather blown away by how far Windows on Arm had come, particularly when it came to app compatibility and performance, though I found it a rather expensive proposition. But you can get theMicrosoft Surface Pro 11 (device only, with Snapdragon X Elite SoC) for just $1,199.99 at Best Buy right now, making it a much easier recommendation.

You'll still have to buy the detachable keyboard if you don't already have one, but if you do, the Surface Pro 11 is compatible with earlier 13-inch Pro edition keyboards from the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 9, so if you have one of those devices and want to upgrade, your current keyboard is likely to work with the new 13-inch Pro.

Now, for just under $200, don't expect a powerful laptop, but with an Intel Core 3 processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD, it'll handle standard tasks fine, and it's a good choice for anyone with a Windows 10 device that needs to upgrade but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. As long as your expectations are kept in check (this won't play games, and heavy workloads like video editing could feel sluggish), this isn't a bad choice at all, and it's now cheaper than the lowest price I saw this laptop go in the recent Amazon Big Deal Days event.

Back over to the US, and I've found this great deal. We were very impressed with the Intel version of the Acer Aspire 14 AI Copilot+ PC when we reviewed it, and for Black Friday,Amazon has slashed the price by 27% to just $439.99, which makes it an incredible value buy.

If you're still using Windows 10, you'll probably have been encouraged to look at upgrading to a Copilot+ PC like the Acer Aspire 14 AI. It comes with an NPU, which means it can handle on device AI tools, so your privacy is maintained as you don't need to share anything online.

Even if you don't care about AI, with an Intel Core Ultra 5 CPU, 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD, this is a fantastic laptop that offers solid performance for day-to-day tasks, and even more demanding workflows, like 4K video editing and music making.

I've just seen this great UK gaming laptop deal for the Acer Nitro V16, which was£1,299 and isnow £1,099 from Very.

The specs are very good: Nvidia RTX 5070, AMD Ryzen 7 CPU, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. The RTX 5070 is one of the best gaphics cards you can get in a gaming laptop, and you'll be able to play the very latest games at high settings. Sure, it's still pricey, but with some gaming laptops going for almost three times this price, I think it's an awesome investment for anyone looking for a gaming laptop that won't bankrupt them.

With that in mind, here's a good cheap Windows 11 laptop I've just spotted on Amazon:

• Dell Inspiron 3530 Laptop:was$399.99now $279 at Amazon

For this sub-$300 price tag you get a solid and dependable laptop that won't blow you away, but will keep up with most of the things you need it to do. Its 13th generation Intel Core i3 processor and 8GB of RAM will cope with most apps, and the 512GB SSD offers plenty of storage space.

This isn't a multitasking workstation, but you get the flexibility of Windows 11 for the kind of price you'd usually only expect with a Chromebook.

I don't know about you, but I'm not in the mood (or financial position) to spend a lot of money at the moment, so the Black Friday laptop deals I'mreally interested in are the budget options.

Buying a verycheap laptop isn't as simple as just going for the one with the lowest price. Unfortunately, sales events like this can see some retailers use it as an excuse to offload underpowered and outdated laptops, and no matter how cheap they are, if they don't work well, you'll still feel like you've wasted money.

So, when looking for a cheap Windows 11 laptop, I recommend going no lower than 8GB of RAM, with an SSD of 256GB (preferably more). A recent processor is also essential.

It's getting increasingly difficult to find a decent gaming laptop for under $1,000 these days, but this is a very good choice. Its Nvidia RTX 4050 isn't the latest, or most powerful, GPU, but it's a very solid budget graphics card, and with support for tech like DLSS, it means you should still be able to play modern games with high graphical settings and effects turned on. The Intel Core 5 210H processor offers very good performance, and the 512GB SSD means there's plenty of space to store games.

I have to say the 8GB of DDR5 RAM feels a bit on the low side, but if you're going to be primarily using this laptop for gaming rather than multitasking with loads of different apps open at once, then it shouldn't be much of a problem, especially at this low price.
