TikTok has established itself as one of the most influential social media platforms in the world. The app shapes how millions create, consume, and share content. Its success as a short-form video leader is matched by the challenges it faces, with ongoing regulatory scrutiny over security and content standards. Who is on TikTok?

In 2025, TikTok stands as one of the
most popular social media platforms worldwide, attracting a massive and diverse user base. The app had around1.59 billion global users at the start of the year, with projections estimating growth to approximately 1.9 billion by 2029. Within country rankings,the United States led with 135 million users, followed by Indonesia with 107 million and Brazil with 92 million.

Demographically, the largest share of TikTok’s audience consisted ofmen aged 25 to 34, making up over 20 percent of its global user base. The platform’s popularity declined among older demographics, reinforcing its strong appeal to younger audiences.

Content is king

By early 2025, TikTok continued to showcase the strong influence of its top creators and shifting user engagement trends. Comedian Khabane Lame held the title of themost-followed creator on the platform in January 2025, amassing 162.4 million subscribers. Close behind was influencer Charli D’Amelio, who ranked second with 155.8 million followers.

Meanwhile, video content on the platform has been steadily getting longer. In 2024, theaverage TikTok video ran for 42.7 seconds, up from 39 seconds in 2023. However, the engagement rate of the platform dropped from5.77 percent in 2023 to 4.64 percent in 2024.

Record success, real challenges

In June 2025, TikTok was one of the most popular apps in the world, ranking as thesecond most downloaded app globally and outranking market leaders such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. It only fell short of ChatGPT, which led the charts with 50 million downloads compared to TikTok’s 37 million.

In the second quarter of 2025 alone,TikTok was downloaded around 192 million times worldwide. During the same period, the platform alsogenerated more than one billion U.S. dollars in direct user revenue, highlighting its rapid growth and sustained global popularity, as well as its role inglobal digital advertising.

Even though it dominates globally, TikTok faces constant challenges. In the United States, the platform is grappling with political pressure and legal battles, asthe threat of a nationwide ban continues to loom. But with its growing user base, creator-driven influence, appeal to younger generations, and impressive revenue streams, TikTok keeps its status as one of the most defining platforms of the digital era.
