Zap (デイン,Dein) isHero'sside special move.

Overview[edit]

Much likeWoosh, this move is acharge special that cannot be stored. It involves the Hero performing various lightning attacks with his sword, which all cause another bolt of lightning on hit to launch at varying strengths.

Holding down the special button will begin charging the move, and releasing it will start the attack based on the amount charged. The move is extremely versatile as a result, allowing it to cover a multitude of ranges given the situation. However, all three suffer from a severe lack of shield pressure: no matter what level of Zap is shielded, the move lacks any solid impact. Regardless, its ability to harass vulnerable opponents still makes it an invaluable tool in Hero's moveset.

All forms of Hero's sword attacks are disjointedhitboxes and notprojectiles. The lightning bolts generated on hit are projectiles, but cannot bereflected orabsorbed. The overhead lightning bolt at the beginning of Kazap can be, however. With the exception of Zap (which is detailed below), if the move is used without sufficient MP, Hero will still perform the animation, but not the actual spell.

The charge levels are as follows:

  • Zap costs 8 MP and is unleashed with little or no charging. It causes the Hero to shoot electric magic from his sword (5%/3% (near/far)), which immediately strikes opponents with a lightning bolt on hit (9%/5%/2.5%).
    • Zap has the shortest range and lowest power, but uses the least MP and comes out quickly. It is thus useful for quickly getting an enemy away from Hero, similarly to moves such as Wolf'sBlaster.
    • If Hero does not have enough MP, he will perform a weak, ordinary slash with no lightning (2%).
  • Zapple (ライデイン,Raidein) costs 18 MP and is unleashed after some charging. Hero casts a long stab of lightning magic forward from his sword (6%), causing enemies to be immediately struck with a lightning bolt on hit (14%/10%/5%).
    • Zapple has an impressive disjointed range, allowing it to harass enemies from an incredible distance away. It also deals high damage for its relatively low commitment and cost.
  • Kazap (ギガデイン,Gigadein) costs 42 MP and is unleashed after a full charge. It causes the Hero to raise his sword toward the sky as a large bolt of lightning (12%/10%) crashes down from high above. When it hits the sword, a large shockwave will damage opponents near Hero (4%), locking them in hitstun. He then proceeds to swing his charged sword in a circle around himself (6% hit 1, 12%/10% hit 2 (front/back)), with a final lightning bolt (16%/12%/6%) striking and launching the opponent on hit. Hero gains 15% ofheavy armor while swinging his sword.
    • Kazap is deceptively quick despite its incredible power, with KO potential as high as moves likeFalcon Punch. It also has deceptively low ending lag, making it difficult to punish from maximum distance. However, this comes at the cost of it taking some time to charge, and it also uses the most MP out of the Hero's moves (with the exception ofMagic Burst). Despite its looks, the bolt of lightning that strikes Hero's sword actually consists of 2 bolts of lightning, with at least 1 bolt needing to hit his sword for the move to work. Typically, it is very unlikely for both bolts of lightning to be canceled in any way, though if 1 bolt is removed (by using moves such asPocket), the move will continue with no changes, and if both bolts are removed (with a move likeGravitational Pull), Kazap will fail, wasting the 42 MP required to cast it. If the bolt misses Hero because he has been moved, the bolt will keep on going forever or until it exits the screen.

Origin[edit]

The Hero using Kazap inDragon Quest XI

Zap is a weak lightning spell that first appeared inDragon Quest Monsters. Zapple and Kazap are the stronger variations that are learned at higher levels, both being introduced inDragon Quest III. Due to the naming conventions of spells being changed inDragon Quest Monsters: Joker, the spell previously known as Zap was renamed to Zapple, while Zap would be used for the weaker spell. These moves, with a few exceptions, can only be learned by the Hero in the main series.

The Hero fromDragon Quest XI was the first character to learn Zap in the main series because it only appeared in spin-off games prior toDragon Quest XI. In the HD-2D Remake ofDragon Quest III, the Hero also gained the ability to learn Zap, as well.

The animation and function of Kazap is similar to the splitter skills that the Luminary learns in Act 3 inDragon Quest XI. It also coincidentally resembles Kirby’s Spin Slash with theZapSword ability inKirby Star Allies.

In their home series, all four Heroes who are playable inSmash can learn Zapple and Kazap, while the Luminary can also learn Zap as mentioned above. Both Solo and Eight's access to Zap is new forUltimate, while Erdrick is able to learn Zap in the HD-2D Remake ofDragon Quest III.

Trivia[edit]

  • Kazap costs the most MP of Hero's moves at 42 MP, with the exception of Magic Burst, which uses up all of the remaining MP.
  • Zap is the only spell Hero uses that originated from aDragon Quest spin-off, that beingDragon Quest Monsters.[1] The spell was originally known as Bolt in the English version. The spells Zapple and Kafrizz both originated fromDragon Quest III, although their current English names were taken fromDragon Quest Monsters: Joker. Zap made its main series debut in the online gameDragon Quest X as an enemy-only spell and it was added to the HD-2D Remake ofDragon Quest III as one of the spells the Hero could learn.
