Windy Hill Zone (ウインディヒル,Windy Hill) is a stage inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. It is based on the first level of the same name fromSonic Lost World.

Stage overview[edit]

Windy Hill Zone consists of a large main platform, with three smaller platforms above, and a giant moving windmill on the right. The windmill acts as a surface, with platforms connected to each blade, and a portion of the windmill goes past theblast line, with the platforms having their collision disabled once they go too high offscreen. The windmill's rotation and speed will also occasionally change during the match.

The main platform consists of a point-like center of gravity; so jumping or getting launched upwards from the edge will cause the character to move diagonally. As the match plays, 2 double-sided springs occasionally appear at both sides of the bottom blast lines. Players who come in contact with a spring will be bounced in the direction the spring is facing, which can cause fighters to be KO'd if bounced towards the bottom or side blastzones (or if a fighter isfast enough, the upper blast line). Seven Animal friends (Flicky, Pecky, Picky, Pocky, Cucky, Ricky and Rocky) from across theSonic the Hedgehog franchise can be seen in the background.

Ω forms and Battlefield form[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, theΩ form is set on a completely flat version of the regular form's main platform, and the gravity is normal. Springs, soft platforms, the windmill, and the Animal Friends are also absent.

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Ω form andBattlefield form are similar to the Ω form inSSB4; however, the main platform is resized and reshaped to matchFinal Destination andBattlefield, respectively. The threesoft platforms of the Battlefield form are made of wood logs that are unique to this form.

Hazards Off[edit]

With hazards turned off inUltimate, the springs do not appear, and the windmill and its platforms never move from their starting position.

Origin[edit]

Windy Hill, as it originally appeared inSonic Lost World.

Windy Hill first appeared in the gameSonic Lost World. It is the game's first level and appears as a lush grassy area of plains. It also contains checkerboard pattern soil, which is similar to how platforms atGreen Hill Zone appeared. The windmill from the level is also present. InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, theBattlefield form features threesoft platforms that resemble the bridges made of logs that appear in the level's second zone.

Springs first appeared inSonic the Hedgehog and were either colored red or yellow. They were usually used to allow the player to access higher parts of the levels, or, if the spring is sideways, to make the player run faster. Springs have appeared in numerousSonic games since, but the design was changed inSonic Adventure and has remained the same since. The new design features the spring being red and blue with a yellow star in the center. This design, however, first originated inSonic the Hedgehog as the Bumpers in Spring Yard Zone were designed similarly. In this stage, there are springs on each side and their design is based off of their appearance inSonic Lost World; however, there were no springs that were back-to-back in Windy Hill.

The animal friends are recurring characters in the series, having first appeared in the originalSonic the Hedgehog (with the exception of Flicky, who first appeared as the protagonist of the arcade game of the same name). They are used by series antagonist Dr. Eggman as living power sources for his Badnik robots, and destroying one of the robots will free the animal inside. They also make an appearance inSonic Lost World where they play the same role, but can additionally be collected to unlock new levels.

Tournament legality[edit]

This stage is banned from tournaments, due to its size, gravity effects, and the springs and windmill allowing for camping.

InUltimate, theΩ form andBattlefield form are also banned due to the grass being dense enough to hide traps set bySnake,Isabelle andSteve.

  • Characters can beStar andScreen KO'd diagonally on both this stage andMario Galaxy.
  • Under extreme circumstances, it is possible to abuse the curved gravity of the stage to stay airborne indefinitely. For example, ifJigglypuff is equipped with twothistle/floaty jump badges and the gravity is set to light, then by pushing against the side walls of the stage, Jigglypuff will move upwards until the control stick is returned to the neutral position or it grabs the ledge.
  • InUltimate,Marshadow cannot be summoned from aPoké Ball on this stage.
