Thewall jump is atechnique unique to certain characters. Introduced inSuper Smash Bros. Melee, wall jumping consists of the character momentarily clinging to thewall, then turning away, and finally jumping back. It is performed by touching a wall and then pressing thecontrol stick ord-pad in the direction opposite to the wall. InBrawl, it can also be performed by pressing the jump button when touching a wall. However, one cannot wall jump forever, as the height gained from each successive wall jump decreases until they stop gaining any height at all. InMelee, a wall jumping character experiences a short period ofintangibility at the moment they kick off the wall, until they are able to perform another action. This is no longer the case as ofBrawl, but the intangibility still applies when the character performs a wall jump out of awall tech, although this intangibility would later be removed inUltimate.

Additionally, all characters can perform a wall jump directly after wall teching. This technique is often used by playersrecovering against anedge-guarder.

Origin[edit]

The wall jump is a common ability in platforming games. Several of the characters who have wall jumps here have had them in games of their own. Mario, Samus, Sonic, Mega Man and Pac-Man have performed wall jumps in their own series: Mario inSuper Mario 64 and its sequel of sorts,Super Mario Sunshine, theNew Super Mario Bros. series, theSuper Mario Galaxy series,Super Mario 3D Land and3D World,Super Mario Maker (only in theNew Super Mario Bros. U game style) andSuper Mario Maker 2 (in theNew Super Mario Bros. U and3D World game styles), andSuper Mario Odyssey; Samus in all games exceptMetroid,Metroid II, andMetroid Prime; Sonic inSonic the Fighters (also known asSonic Championship),Sonic Heroes (in the latter Sonic could do a horizontal wall jump known as the Triangle Jump),Sonic the Hedgehog (2006),Sonic Unleashed,Sonic Colors,Sonic Generations andSonic Lost World; Mega Man inMega Man: The Power Battle,Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters andMarvel vs. Capcom (Mega Man's successor,X, can also wall jump); and Pac-Man inPac-Man World 3.

There is some debate as to whether or notSuper Mario Bros. is the first instance of wall-jumping in Nintendo games, as in that game the technique was a glitch (which may have become noteworthy enough to be included as a real mechanic later on inSuper Mario 64); however, theMario series is generally given credit for popularizing the move.

Some characters unable to wall jump in theSuper Smash Bros. series have been able to wall jump in their own games. Luigi can wall jump in theNew Super Mario Bros. series, inSuper Mario 3D World along withPeach andRosalina, inSuper Mario Run andSuper Mario Bros. Wonder along with Peach,Daisy andYoshi, and inSuper Mario Maker 2 (but not inSuper Mario 64 DS, where it was a power unique to Mario).Luigi andBowser Jr. can also wall jump inMario Superstar Baseball.Donkey Kong can wall jump inJungle Beat and can wall cling inMario Superstar Baseball andMario Super Sluggers. Yoshi can also wall cling inMario Superstar Baseball andSuper Mario Odyssey, however the latter instance is Mario who is controlling him.Kirby can wall jump with the ninja ability inKirby Super Star, though it functioned more like awall cling.Sora can wall jump as part of the Flowmotion Mechanic inKingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance andKingdom Hearts III.

Trivia[edit]

  • Pikachu,Dr. Mario, andMewtwo are the only veterans to gain the ability to wall jump in games released afterMelee.
    • Pikachu gaining the ability to wall jump starting inBrawl accounts for part of the evidence of the fan theory that the Pichu fromMelee evolved into the Pikachu in future games.
  • Cloud,Toon Link, andYoung Link are the only swordsmen that have the ability to wall jump.
    • Byleth can also wall jump but only with his up specialSword of the Creator. However, he can only wall jump this way 3 times before returning to stage.
  • Star Fox is the only universe with multiple fighters in which the entirety of its fighters can wall jump.
  • Luigi could wall jump in the E3 demo build ofSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, but cannot do so in the final game.
  • InSSB4,Pac-Land is the only stage whoseΩ form's walls cannot be wall jumped on.
  • Little Mac's ability to wall jump is fairly unusual, as it not only contrasts with his otherwise notoriously weak aerial game, but also covers a decent amount of height as well.
  • Inklings cannot wall jump inSplatoon andSplatoon 2. Instead, they can swim up walls that are covered in ink of their color. However, Inkling's wall jump animation does not involve them turning into their squid form whatsoever.
    • Inklings can wall jump inSplatoon 3 by either performing asquid roll off of a wall or using theZipcaster special weapon, though these methods were introduced after Inkling's inclusion inUltimate.
  • The manual forUltimate incorrectly stated thatSimon could wall jump, but his name was later replaced withPac-Man's.
  • InMelee, afterMario performs his up special, there is a small window of time that allows Mario to wall jump due to a developer oversight. Afterward the Mario player can still do more actions, such as another up special.
