Similar to theprevious year, tournament organizers ran aTwitter poll regardingSteve's legality at Luminosity Makes BIG Moves 2025.[1] After 54.8% voted against a ban, Steve was legalized, making this event the first in the Luminosity Makes Moves series sinceLet's Make Big Moves 2023 where Steve was not banned.[2]
In doubles, the team seeded 1st,Onin andlolyoshi, was notably upset by the team seeded 65th,LVL7 andSynnister, 1-2 (upset factor 11), marking one of the largest upsets inUltimate doubles history. However, Onin and lolyoshi were able to pull off an extensive Losers run to enter Grand Finals, where they lost 2-3 toLui$ andKurama.
This event saw several strong runs fromTristate players. First, this event was a breakout performance for #208 seedLuigikid64. He first upset #49 seedSpritzy 3-2 and #80 seedYoda Cage 3-0 (upset factor 3) to enter Top 128 on the Winners side, where after losing toWrath 2-3 he made a string of upsets, defeating #89 seedDM 1-3, reverse 3-0ing #17 seedMuteAce (upset factor 7), and upsetting #24 seedTilde 3-2 (upset factor 7), before falling 0-3 toQuandale Dinglelingleton for 25th. This event was also a resurgent performance for #20 seedDabuz, who chose to focus onStreet Fighter 6 during theLumiRank 2024.2 season and as such was only an Honorable Mention on the rankings. His run involved defeating #4 seedLight 3-0 (upset factor 5) and #5 seedTweek 3-1 (upset factor 4) to enter top 8 on the Winners side, his first top 8 at a supermajor sinceLuminosity Makes Moves Miami 2023 in October 2023 and his first top 8 at any major sinceCirque Du CFL 3 in March 2024. Finally, a few Tristate players also made upsets on established players: #59 seedPkChris upset #6 seedMkLeo 3-0 (upset factor 7) and went on to place 9th, the best major performance of his competitive career; while #39 seedPharaoh reverse 3-0'd #16 seedMarss (upset factor 3) for 65th. Marss's placement tiedSuper Smash Con 2022 as his worstUltimate major placement, while also being his worst major placement when usingZero Suit Samus.
Outside of Tristate, this tournament was also known for #47 seedJeJaJeJa's run. He first had a minor upset over #18 seedBeastModePaul before losing toLui$ in Winners top 64. From there, he upset #23 seedJakal 3-1 and #11 seedKola 3-0 (upset factor 4) before bowing out toTweek 3-0 for 9th. This marked the best Kirby placement at a major, outrankingGuilheww's 13th-place finish atS Factor 11 which took place only half a year prior. Other notable upsets on high seeds included #179 seedGRIT defeating Marss 3-2 (upset factor 7) and #43 seedBruho defeating Kola 3-2 (upset factor 4).
Despite making several notable upsets prior to top 8, Tristate was ultimately unable to defend their Tristate Luminosity Makes Moves title. The closest wasSyrup, who placed 3rd after defeating Tweek 3-0 and Light 3-2, but was double-eliminated byHurt 3-1 in both sets. As such, this event became the first Tristate Luminosity Makes Moves event where no Tristate players entered Grand Finals, let alone won, as Grand Finals featuring a match between newly-crowned #1 playerSparg0 and Hurt. Sparg0 ultimately triumphed 3-0 to win the event. With Sparg0 also placing 2nd at the tournament'sRivals of Aether II event, many players compared his tournament performance toWizzrobe's performance atSmash 'N' Splash 5, as both players won their main event while surprising audiences by placing top 8 at a different platform fighter as the "side" event.
