Kagaribi 8 was aSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Tokyo, Japan, from July 30th-31st, 2022.
Tournament summary[edit]
Kagaribi 8 was initially ranked as a supermajor, however due to rising cases ofCOVID-19 in Japan, several top Japanese players, includingacola,Tea, andKome, dropped out of the tournament, demoting the tournament to just a major. It is currently the last tournament in theKagaribi series that was not ranked as a supermajor.
The tournament is most known for beingMiya's breakout offline event. Prior to this event, Miya was mostly known for being one of the bestSmashmate players who was just beginning to make his mark offline. Entering the tournament as the #24 seed, Miya ran through the entire bracket, upsettingProtoBanham 3-1,Shuton 3-2, andAbadango twice 3-1 and 3-2 to win the tournament without dropping a set. Miya's run was not only unexpected to players outside of Japan, but also markedMr. Game & Watch's first-ever major win inUltimate, a feat that not evenMaister, the best Mr. Game & Watch player at that time, had done. In addition, this marked the second Kagaribi that was won by a first-time entrant, withacola having previously wonKagaribi 7.
Although overshadowed by Miya's run, Abadango saw arguably his best tournament run since the early metagame. Due to declining performances at tournaments and missing out on top 8 at every major sinceEGS Cup 3, Abadango was seeded 21st, a low seed for a player who was once one of Japan's best players. Despite this, Abadango made several notable upsets, defeatingKameme 3-0,Yoshidora 3-1, ProtoBanham 3-0,KEN 3-2, andShuton 3-2 to ultimately place 2nd, the highest Abadango has placed at a major since his victory atUmebura SP 4. Most impressive about this run was that, aside from Yoshidora, all those upsets were performed withMeta Knight, a character that was mostly regarded as barely viable. As a result, Abadango's run marked the best tournament run for a Meta Knight player at anUltimate major, while this run and Abadango's later run atVCA 2022 led to a reassessment on Meta Knight's viability.
