Terry Bogard (テリー・ボガード,Terry Bogard) is the main protagonist of theFatal Fury franchise. Originally an orphan, Terry and his younger brother Andy begin their journeys as martial artists in order to avenge their adoptive father, Jeff Bogard, who was murdered by crime lord Geese Howard. Over time, Terry becomes renowned as a talented fighter who seeks to continue protecting his hometown alongside Andy and their mutual friend and fellow martial artist Joe Higashi.

Terry is also a prominent character in several ofSNK's fighting game series, and one of the major supporting characters inThe King of Fighters series. As such, he is widely considered to be one of SNK's most iconic characters.[1] Terry made hisSuper Smash Bros. series debut inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate as the fourth character ofFighters Pass Vol. 1. Terry is the third fighter inSmash to originate from a fighting game, followingRyu andKen Masters, and precedingMin Min andKazuya Mishima.

Origin[edit]

Terry Bogard is an American martial artist known for his charisma and friendliness. His fighting style is a mix of various techniques from a variety of martial arts, including boxing, kung fu, and kickboxing, in addition to the fictional martial art Hakkyokuseiken, created by his master, Tung Fu Rue. Outside of fighting, his other hobbies include playing video games and basketball. Terry also has a love interest, "Blue" Mary Ryan, and a pet monkey named Ukee.

Terry, alongside his younger brother Andy, spent his early childhood as an orphan living on the dangerous streets of the fictional South Town. They were soon adopted by Jeff Bogard, a student of the Hakkyokuseiken martial art. When Terry was 10 years old, he witnessed Jeff's murder at the hands of the local crime boss Geese Howard, host of the "King of Fighters" fighting tournament and former friend of Jeff. Terry and Andy thus spent the next decade honing their skills to avenge their father's death: while Andy traveled to Japan to learn the art of ninjutsu, Terry stayed in South Town, fighting through its mean streets. After this, the two of them, along with their friend, Muay Thai champion Joe Higashi, entered the King of Fighters tournament and ultimately defeated Geese, sending him falling from the top of a high rise, as depicted inFatal Fury: King of Fighters.

The following year, Geese's half-brother, a German nobleman named Wolfgang Krauser von Stroheim, sponsors a new King of Fighters tournament, bringing it from South Town to the world stage. During the events ofFatal Fury 2, Terry enters this tournament and defeats Krauser in the finals, earning Terry the title of South Town Hero. After this, Krauser mysteriously disappears, apparently having taken his own life shortly after his defeat.

Three years later, inFatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory, Terry returns to South Town from his worldwide travels. He meets with Andy, Joe, and Andy's love interest, Mai Shiranui, just in time for the grand opening of Pao Pao Café West. They soon learn that Geese survived his fall, and that he intends to obtain the legendary Jin Scrolls, which are capable of granting their user immortality.

Terry and his friends enter another King of Fighters tournament, where they meet Ryuji Yamazaki, a Japanese crime boss hired by the Jin brothers to find the scrolls. After defeating both Yamazaki and Geese, Terry is suddenly transported to a mysterious chamber by Jin Chon Shu, who challenges him for the scrolls; he ultimately defeats both him and his older brother Jin Chon Rei. While Terry is crowned the champion of this new tournament, he discovers that Geese had managed to escape with the scrolls.

InReal Bout Fatal Fury, Terry and his friends fight their way through the new King of Fighters tournament, once again in South Town. Terry eventually progresses to the final battle in the tournament, a bout against Geese. At the end of the fight, Geese is knocked off the edge of a high rise once again, but Terry grabs hold of him before he can fall any further. Geese, in a seeming act of egotism, refuses Terry's help and knocks his hand away, plummeting to what is believed to be his permanent death. In the aftermath of the tournament, Terry comes across a boy named Rock Howard, Geese's son, who lost his mother after Geese abandoned them and left his wife to die in illness. Terry takes Rock in as a surrogate son, raising him as a means to put the feud between him and Geese behind, and teaches him how to fight on the streets of South Town and during his travels around the world.

Several years later inGarou: Mark of the Wolves, Terry is the only veteran fighter who participates in the King of Fighters Maximum Mayhem tournament, which is held by Rock's uncle, Kain R. Heinlein, in the neighbouring Second South Town. Though Terry realizes the tournament is meant to lure Rock into Kain's control, Terry reluctantly accepts Rock's decision to enter the tournament, driven by Kain's claim that his sister—Rock's mother—is alive.

InThe King of Fighters series[edit]

Terry is a recurring character inThe King of Fighters series, where he is the core leader of theFatal Fury Team, usually with Andy and Joe as his teammates, in the series' main timeline. Due to being a crossover series like theSuper Smash Bros. series,The King of Fighters series ignores the continuity of many of the previous games of each series that it features. For example, characters fromFatal Fury and its prequel seriesArt of Fighting are depicted as around the same age as one another, despiteArt of Fighting being set over a decade before the events ofFatal Fury. Although both first and second games’ storylines of bothArt of Fighting andFatal Fury are being acknowledged in this continuity. Another notable example is that Rock was still raised by Terry in spite of Geese and Krauser's deaths being ignored, and eventually grows up and legitimate to enter the tournament during the fourth arc's tournament, where he finally faces Geese. However, the 3D fighting game spin-off seriesThe King of Fighters: Maximum Impact is heavily based on the storyline ofMark of the Wolves, where Geese perished at the end ofReal Bout Fatal Fury's tournament, thus making it a direct follow-up to the mainFatal Fury shared universe games.

The onlyThe King of Fighters’ saga where Terry played an important role was in its second storyline, NESTS Chronicles (from ‘99 - 2001). Terry helps Blue Mary while she is being targeted by the NESTS organization who kidnapped and cloned Kyo Kusanagi, while taking down one of its remaining secret agents/assassins who were sent by said syndicate somewhere in the world. With the death of all boss characters of the NESTS Saga, Terry returns to helping people in restoring South Town, which was half-destroyed by a traitorous clone of NESTS’ loyalist Zero (who disguised himself as Ling, a tactical advisor to Heidern) back in 2000.

Outside of these series, Terry has become a mascot for SNK as a whole likeRyu toCapcom, often appearing alongside the company logo in promotional material. This has led to a plethora of guest appearances in other media such as numerous crossovers where he is often a headliner for the SNK side of the title. Of particular note is the gameSNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, where Terry appears as a female with a new character design and voice. This is caused by antagonist Kukri creating a pocket dimension where various female SNK characters find themselves in. Any non-female characters trapped in this dimension turn female while inside, except Iori Yagami, under guise of Miss X (the final boss ofSNK Heroines spiritual prequel,SNK Gals Fighters) has options given by the players to switch between his female form or retain his original male form. Terry's ending depicts the ending ofReal Bout: Fatal Fury where Geese Howard willingly falls off Geese Tower to his death while Terry watches, only for Terry to turn around and find a menacing Rock Howard, who proceeds to boot him off the edge. Terry then suddenly awakens in his apartment and realizes it was all a nightmare.

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

As a playable character[edit]

Terry, as he appears inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Terry appears as anewcomer inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, with his inclusion being announced during aNintendo Direct on September 4, 2019.[2] He is the fourthDLC character ofFighters Pass Vol. 1, and was released on November 6th, 2019.[3]

The overwhelming majority of Terry's moveset consists of attacks he has used throughout theFatal Fury andThe King of Fighters series, although his up aerial is unique toUltimate because of the lack of a reasonably corresponding attack.[4] Like fellow fighting game charactersRyu,Ken andKazuya, Terry always faces his opponent when one is left standing (teammates counted ifTeam Attack is on) and several of his normal moves can be canceled into his special moves.[4]

Uniquely, Terry also possesses a number of mechanics from his home series: he has access to a dodge attack, a backward special move (Crack Shoot), and two super special moves (Buster Wolf andPower Geyser).[4] However, his super specials only become usable when his damage percentage reaches 100% (or 30% of his startingHP inStamina Mode). This is in reference to his home series, where characters can use Desperation Moves when their power gauge is full and they have less than half of their health left.[4]
