Super Sonic (スーパーソニック,Super Sonic) isSonic'sFinal Smash.
Overview[edit]
In the attack, Sonic uses the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic, and is able to fly quickly and attack fighters by ramming into them.
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. 4[edit]
The screen zooms in on Sonic, and he transforms, based on the transformation animation fromSonic the Hedgehog 2. When Sonic transforms, he gains the ability to fly around the stage at an incredible speed. The transformation lasts for about 15 seconds (though this can be extended by ramming into opponents and other things that can take damage, causinghitlag), and is completelyinvincible for its duration. He is also unaffected byBumpers. Sonic can attack in this form by simply ramming into opponents; the faster he is going, the more damage he deals. When the opponent is attacked, the move deals about 35%, but the first attack is roughly 25%, and never lower (the attacks are variable in function of this speed: 12%/19% inSSB4). It is similar in function toPikachu's Final Smash,Volt Tackle, except that it cannot go through hardplatforms like Volt Tackle can (however, when Sonic is too slow or has stopped moving, he will be unable to go through soft platforms), and has betterknockback and control. Super Sonic cannotKO himself when he reaches theblast line, regardless of how far it is going, but if he turns back to normal while he is too far away to recover, he will be penalized with aself-destruct.
Sonic's Final Smash is arguably among the strongest inBrawl, as the player cannot take damage for its entire duration, and cannot be KO'd, unlike other transformations such asWario-Man andGiga Bowser. Furthermore, an experienced player who has learned how to control Super Sonic's unwieldy movement can use his high damage output, knockback, and speed to guarantee multiple KOs. Even then, he can fly around a single target and rapidly rack up damage in a focused vicinity, making him hard to avoid.
If used with theRegenerating terrain glitch, the move will instantly end. However, if the glitch is used inGreen Hill Zone, Sonic will be able to infinitely fly around under the stage.
Super Sonic's attack power was weakened drastically inSSB4, though it is still a potent Final Smash.
The following are Sonic's quotes upon activating the Final Smash in each language. His lines inSmash 4 andUltimate (barring Japanese) are recycled fromSonic Generations, when he says, "Time to scramble some Eggman,Super Sonic style!"[1]
InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
The Final Smash returns inUltimate largely unchanged in principle, but with one major alteration: the player has no control over his horizontal movement for the duration. He instead flies back and forth across the screen automatically (with even greater speed compared to the previous games), while the player can only control his vertical position. Overall, the move lasts for a much shorter duration, and can often be avoided completely bycrouching, or KOs can be avoided by taking the first hit and stalling in the air. Contact with Super Sonic inflicts 6% damage for each impact and weak vertical knockback, however towards the end of the move, the knockback of each hit is increased, and the ending hitbox deals 10% damage and fairly strong vertical knockback. This results in the move being considered greatly inferior to its prior iterations and is considered to be one of, if not the worst Final Smashes overall alongsidePuff Up.
How fast Sonic flies back and forth between the edges of the screen depends on the stage's camera view. On stages similar to the size ofThe Great Cave Offensive, he flies slowly, while on a stage with a camera view similar to3D Land, he flies very rapidly between the screen's edges, and the attack will often prove fatal to at least one opponent if used correctly.
Instructional quotes[edit]
| Use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to transform. Race through the air at reckless speed! [Sonic] has tremendous inertia and is hard to control, but his top speed is top class! Those who are witnessing this move should plan on dodging! If you boost your speed recklessly, you’ll pass by people too quickly, making it easier for them to dodge. Speed control is important with this Final Smash. | ||
| Move at super-high speed, and deal damage on contact. | ||
| Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds to turn into Super Sonic and then dashes left and right, crossing through the stage at supersonic speed. You can adjust the angle at which Sonic moves through the air slightly up or down. |
Trophies[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
- Super Sonic
- Sonic's Final Smash. The Chaos Emeralds give energy to all living things, and Sonic's gathered all seven of them, then used their power to transform into Super Sonic. His abilities in this form far surpass his normal ones, and he's even able to fly. He uses a lot of energy in this form, so he can only remain in it for a short time.

InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U[edit]
- Super Sonic
The Chaos Emeralds are said to hold enough power to control the whole world. It's that power that turns Sonic into Super Sonic. He turns a glorious golden color and can fly at nearly the speed of light. In his Final Smash, this high-speed flight damages anyone who gets in its way and can even launch them!

Super Sonic appears inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Legend-classprimary spirit.
Super Sonic uses aGoldSonic puppet fighter and is fought on theWindy Hill Zone stage. During the battle, Sonic will suddenly receive a Final Smash, referencing how Super Sonic serves as Sonic's Final Smash.

Origin[edit]
In theSonic series, Super Sonic is a special temporary form granted to Sonic once he has obtained all seven Chaos Emeralds that grants Sonic invincibility and increased speed, accompanied with flight in some instances.
The Chaos Emeralds are important collectables in theSonic series. The first six appeared in the originalSonic the Hedgehog as optional collectables to achieve the game's good ending, with a seventh Emerald added starting withSonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis. In the Final Smash, the Chaos Emeralds are seen briefly before Sonic turns into Super Sonic, and fly off the screen in 3D once he reverts back.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also marks Super Sonic's first appearance, where he is playable upon obtaining all seven emeralds via theSpecial Stages and jumping while holding fifty rings. In it and other Genesis games within theSonic series, Super Sonic is functionally identical to having both the invincibility andPower Sneakers powerups applied at the same time. However, the form is still vulnerable to instant death hazards such as bottomless pits, crushing, or drowning. The form also drains one ring per second while active and will revert the user as soon as they're all depleted, a trait carried over to its appearances in the series' 3D titles.
The method of acquiring the Chaos Emeralds (and thus Super Sonic) varies throughout the series, ranging from the player collecting them through optional Special Stages to them being obtained regularly through story events. Starting withSonic & Knuckles, the Super form has often been required to fight the final boss, and starting withSonic Adventure, the Super form has typically only been available during the fight or made available during regular levels after defeating the final boss. However,Sonic Colors returned to the traditional model, offering Super Sonic as an in-level reward for completing optional special stages, andSonic Generations would later become the first game sinceSonic & Knuckles to have both a final boss exclusive to Super Sonic and a fully playable Super Sonic in-game. This availability, however, would be reverted inSonic Lost World, which featured unlockability status similar to that ofSonic Colors, andSonic Forces notoriously featured it as DLC in a series first, making it free for a limited time before making it permanently free after fan backlash.
InBrawl andSmash 4, Super Sonic's controls incorporate the free-flying seen in the final boss fights of various games, such asSonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles andSonic Adventure 2 while his animations mimic Super Sonic's sprites and animations from the Genesis games.
InUltimate, the transformation gives the stage a backdrop resembling a dark void, similarly to where several final boss fights in the series take place, such as those against Ultimate Gemerl, the Egg Salamander, Solaris, Alf Layla wa-Layla, the Dark Queen, the Time Eater, the Phantom King, and the Mega Death Egg Robot core.

Trivia[edit]
| This article is in need of additional images. The editor who added this tag suggests:I think a side-by-side comparison of the regular and super models in the bind pose would be both useful and interesting to include. If you have a good image for this article, upload ithere. |
- In theSmash games, Super Sonic's model is simply Sonic's model with a texture swap and a different expression (as well as longer quills starting inSSB4). His quills are manually raised by his animations, which is unlike theSonic series, where the quills are modeled to point upward. As a result, when Super Sonic is viewed in hisbind pose, his quills are pointed downward, the same as Sonic's regular form.
- The only force inBrawl that can affect Super Sonic is theIsaacAssist Trophy, which with correct timing can cause him toself-destruct.
- There is a glitch with Super Sonic onWarioWare, Inc. If one floats around the side of the stage in the elevator part, when the microgame starts, Super Sonic will be under the main platform, then go to the middle. When the microgame ends, Super Sonic will be inside the main platform.
- Sonic's English voice clip inBrawl (voiced byJason Griffith) upon activating the Final Smash was argued by someBrawl players on whether he yelled "Now I'll show you!", or "Here I'll show you!", due to the intense reverberation of the voice clip and a slight grunt Sonic makes before yelling his line. However, the Smash Bros. DOJO!! described the Final Smash with the earlier quote, and the raw, non-reverbing soundbyte in the game's data has him clearly yell "Now I'll show you!".
- Super Sonic'sBrawl trophy is the only Final Smash trophy that references a game of origin that is notBrawl itself.
- LaterSonic games adoptedBrawl's quirk of having Sonic transform before the Chaos Emeralds enter his body, though this was reverted inSonic Frontiers.
- The officialSonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-Speed-ia differentiates the two versions of the Final Smash as being either "Controlled" (Brawl andSmash 4) or "Automatic" (Ultimate).
