TheSuper Mushroom (スーパーキノコ,Super Mushroom) is an item from theMario series.
Origin[edit]
The Super Mushroom made its debut inSuper Mario Bros. as theMagic Mushroom and has become an important recurring item in laterMario games. The Super Mushroom allows the player who touches itto grow larger and able to withstand a single hit from enemies and breakBrick Blocks by jumping into them from underneath. It has since appeared in nearly everyMario sidescroller game (except forSuper Mario Bros. 2, where it simply increased the player's health), as well asSuper Mario 3D Land andSuper Mario 3D World with the same effect.
The Super Mushroom is considered an icon in theSuper Mario series and serves as itsseries symbol in theSuper Smash Bros. series. In theMario Kart series, it also serves as the logo for theMushroom Cup.
Effect[edit]
The Super Mushroom appears on the stage and keeps sliding to the right. InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, it will slide left if it spawns on the right half of the stage. When a fighter touches it, it has the following effects:
- Makes the fighter, and theirhitboxes and hurtboxes, bigger.
- Increases the fighter'sweight by a small amount (applies a 1.6× multiplier inMelee, and a 1.42× multiplier inSuper Smash Bros. 4 andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate).
- Applies a reduction multiplier to the fighter's sustainedknockback, in addition to the weight change.
- Increases the base power of direct attacks (1.2× inMelee, 1.56× fromSuper Smash Bros. Brawl onwards), subsequently increasing knockback.
- Most projectiles still deal their base damage, though they do still gain increased range and hitbox sizes during the item's effect. This also applies to some other unique attacks, such asHammers.
- The base knockback and knockback growth values are not directly affected.
- Increases the fighter'sitem toss strength, making thrown items go further and deal more damage.
- Increases the fighter'sjump height.
- Increases the fighter'sfalling speed andgravity (1.42× fall speed fromBrawl onward). Certainup specials, such asHero's Spin, will grant less vertical height as a result.
- Increases the fighter'sair speed significantly (1.5× fromBrawl onward).
- Increases the fighter'swalking andrunning speeds (1.5× fromBrawl onward).
- Increases landing lag and aerial landing lag.
- Increases the fighter'sledge grab range proportionally.
- The fighter's sound effects and voice become lower-pitched and slowed down. This does not affect gameplay.
The transformation lasts about ten seconds. Touching another Super Mushroom will reset the timer. Touching a Super Mushroom while under the effect of aPoison Mushroom and vice versa will restore a character to their normal size, whereas the effects ofLightning are canceled.
InSuper Smash Bros.[edit]
The Super Mushroom does not appear as an item; however,Giant Donkey Kong, the opponent in the sixth stage of the1P Game mode, has differences fromDonkey Kong reminiscent of the Super Mushroom, possibly inspiring its appearance inMelee. Super Mushrooms were intended to appear as an item, and the item graphics were prepared, but there were concerns about bugs that could arise from how large fighters would interact with the collision detection for terrain, so they were scrapped.[1]
InSuper Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
The Super Mushroom debuts as a transformation item, with the effects described above.
Giant battles appear as a feature inMelee'sSpecial Smash where all fighters are under the permanent effects of a Super Mushroom, and these effects (except for the fighter's pitch) can stack. Giant battles can also occur inClassic Mode.
Trophy[edit]
- Super Mushroom
- Super Mario Bros. veterans will recognize these power-ups, which hid inside brick blocks and helped Mario and Luigi withstand enemy attacks. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, they temporarily turn your character into a giant. Not only will your size and strength increase, but so will your mass, making it harder for foes to knock you off.
- Super Mario Bros. (10/85)
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
The Super Mushroom returns as an item, reprising its behavior fromMelee. It is based on its modern design.
When a fighter collects the Super Mushroom, they will strike a pose after touching the Super Mushroom, briefly relishing their increased size and lamenting their return to normal size. Most of the items held by the fighter, as well as their own projectiles, will grow proportionately to the fighter's bigger size. Certain attacks or charge ups can be interrupted if a Super Mushroom touches the fighter in the course of doing an action.
Acquiring a Super Mushroom causes a fighter's direct attacks to deal 1.56× their normal damage, except forWario,Wario-Man,Samus,Fox,Falco,Wolf,Captain Falcon,Squirtle,Ivysaur,Lucario, andSnake, where their direct attacks will deal 1.8× their normal damage.
Giant battles also return as aSpecial Brawl feature and in Classic Mode. In a Giant Special Brawl, fighters are heavier, and take less knockback than normal. Their direct attacks also deal 1.64× their normal damage, but the multiplier increases to around 2.648× (3.08× for the previously mentioned characters) upon acquiring a Super Mushroom. Pitch can also now be altered further.
Trophy[edit]
- Super Mushroom
- A mushroom that makes you giant sized. When you're this big, your attack power increases and you're harder to launch. But you become an easy target and may come under serious fire. Unlike other items, it doesn't remain in one place but moves to the right once it appears. Why to the right? Well, because that's what it did in its original appearance in Super Mario Bros.

InSuper Smash Bros. 4[edit]
The Super Mushroom returns as an item, reprising its behavior from the previous games.
Unlike inBrawl, all fighters who acquire a Super Mushroom will deal 1.56x their normal damage with their direct attacks.
Giant battles are once again available as aSpecial Smash option and during Classic Mode. In a Giant Special Smash, fighters are heavier than normal, but unlike inBrawl, they don't receive any knockback taken reductions. Their direct attacks still deal 1.64x their normal damage, and the multiplier increases to 3.08x if they acquire a Super Mushroom. In a Tiny Special Smash, fighters who acquire Super Mushrooms will deal 0.676x their normal damage.
InTraining Mode, there is a glitch where the Super Mushroom may fail to increase the weight of the user until it is attacked at least once.
As aMii Costume[edit]
The Super Mushroom serves as the basis for the Super Mushroom Hat headgear for theMii Fighters.
InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, it can be unlocked by playingRival Smash for the first time.
InSmash Tour[edit]
The Super Mushroom appears as a red trophy item. When used, it makes the player's fighter start the battle in giant form. Using this trophy cancels the effect of aPoison Mushroom trophy used by an opponent.
The Super Mushroom is one of the items that can appear during a Transformation Smash.
Trophy[edit]
- Super Mushroom
This mysterious mushroom will cause you to grow several times your normal size. Once you've grown, the power of your attacks and your ability to launch your opponents will increase. However, being so large—and such an easy target—may not be so great in a fight with lots of enemies...

:New Super Mario Bros. (05/2006)
This mysterious mushroom will just keep sliding until it bounces off a wall. If you touch it, though, you'll grow and grow and grow! You'll get stronger and be harder to launch, but you'll also be a much easier target. Maybe standing out so much during a fight isn't such a good idea...

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
The Super Mushroom returns once again as an item inUltimate.
Unlike inBrawl andSuper Smash Bros 4., the fighters no longer strike a pose when they're growing or shrinking, making their animation similar of that toMelee. This also prevents certain attacks and animations from being interrupted when a player touches one.
The Super Mushroom cannot appear inThe Great Cave Offensive,Golden Plains, andMinecraft World.
As aMii Costume[edit]
The Super Mushroom Hat returns as a default headgear for theMii Fighters.
Spirit[edit]
The Super Mushroom also appears as an Advanced-classsupport spirit. It can only bepurchased fromTimmy & Tommy's. There are also several other spirits that will give the player the Super Mushroom effect at the start of a match.

Trivia[edit]
- Mario's taunt in the first four games, where he temporarily grows, is similar to the Super Mushroom effect.
- The largest a character can be under normal circumstances inMelee is by using Mario's taunt while under the effect of Super Mushroom in Giant Melee.
- InMelee, jumping at the moment that the Super Mushroom's effects wear off also causes characters to perform a super jump that is almost as high as two jumps while wearing theBunny Hood.
- InBrawl, a glitch occurs whenPikachu usesQuick Attack on a Super or Poison Mushroom. It will cause thesize change super jump.
- InBrawl,Pikmin Throw uniquely won't change pitch upon growing or shrinking.
- InSSB4, although Pikmin grow and shrink withOlimar, the pitch of Pikmin depends on what size they were when plucked, and this pitch persists even after further size changes.
- InUltimate, the sounds of giant puppet fighters in several Spirit Battles may play at their normal pitch instead of slowed down as usual for unknown reasons. This appears to happen frequently when theconditions "The enemy is giant" and/or "Giant [character]" are not listed on the Spirit Battle preview screen; an example can be seen with the giant puppet fighters appear in the handful ofSpirit Battles inPersona'sDLC Spirit Board. This is also true for the Spirit Battles involving tiny puppet fighters.
