TheSuper Launch Star (スーパースターリング,Super Star Ring) is anitem from theSuper Smash Bros. series, based on theLaunch Star from theMario series.
Origin[edit]
Launch Star made their debut inSuper Mario Galaxy and has become a recurring item in theSuper Mario Galaxy series. It allows the player to jump inside one and launch them, either to a new galaxy, or along a set path to another planet. Launch Stars may be found broken up into five Star Chips, after defeating a set number of enemies, or after a Luma transforms into one. A smaller variant known as aSling Star exists.
Overview[edit]
As anitem[edit]
The Super Launch Star debuted as a throwing/trapping item inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. It will appear small when appearing on a stage, but when picked up and thrown, they will become larger, float in the air, and aim in the opposite direction it was thrown (or in a random direction if dropped). It will stay in place for around 10 seconds after being thrown before disappearing.
When a fighter touches the Super Launch Star hovering in the air, it will launch them, doing no damage but dealing heavy knockback. The knockback will scale up with damage (with a limit of 50%) and is usually well enough to rocket characters over blast lines, especially if it was pointing upwards, making it a significant hazard on all but the largest stages. The Super Launch Star does not use the knockback formula to calculate how fast it launches fighters, instead applying a flat launch speed based on their percent plus how fast they were moving when they entered it. Additionally, the vertical component of this knockback behaves more like a jump, being decayed by the fighter's gravity, and being cancelled immediately if they jump or perform another action which cancels vertical momentum. The end result of this is that floatier (though not necessarilylighter) characters are more susceptible to KOs off the top, and entering a Super Launch Star with some speed increases the danger of being KO'd.
Spirits[edit]
Equipping the Luma, Warp Star, Gracie, Ouendan Cheerleaders, Elite Beat Divas, or Shop Assistant supportspirits will give the player a Super Launch Star at a start of their stock.
