This stage is so exciting! When the summit of the mountain clears up you can slide down the incline straight into the ocean. There are tons of details to take in: the aurora floats over the mountaintop, a polar bear with sunglasses and swimming trunks swims in the ocean, and there's even a mysterious fish that tries to eat the fighters...
Super Smash Blog,Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Official Site

Summit (頂上,Summit) is a stage inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate based onIce Climber, with some elements taken fromBalloon Fight. It starts on an icy mountain top whichMasahiro Sakurai, the director, describes as being the summit ofIcicle Mountain, a stage that appears inSuper Smash Bros. Melee. The stage was revealed on Smash Bros. DOJO!! on October 31, 2007. In reference toHalloween, one image featured a pumpkin. InUltimate, theIce Climbers are fought here in their unlock battle.

Stage overview[edit]

The mountain has several linear platforms on the top, and the leftmost can be unhinged, temporarily disabling it. There is a blue sloped platform of ice to the right, which can be broken, as well as a small "cave" at the bottom, with an icicle occasionally falling, causing moderate knockback and 20% damage. When not surrounded by water, a cloud platform will occasionally pass by, which players can stand on. As the entire bottom of the stage is made of ice, the edges at the bottom cannot be grabbed (Brawl only), and naturally, thefloor is extremely slippery, especially when a character attempts to change direction rapidly. TheIce Climbers are the only characters who can walk normally on the stage without sliding.

Severalvegetables from the originalIce Climber will make an appearance acting asfood items. The vegetables appear in the order they do in the original game, namely an eggplant, carrot, cabbage, cucumber, corn, turnip, pumpkin, Chinese cabbage, potato, and a mushroom. They all restore 5% health with the exception of the corn, which restores 10%. They will not appear if Food is turned off or item frequency is set to none.

The stage begins on top of the mountain, but then breaks and begins to slide down a hill. InBrawl, during the descent everybody becomes much morefloaty, but this was heavily toned down inUltimate, to the point of barely being noticeable. The key factor to survival is to remain on the iceberg, as making contact with the left side of the mountain will result in being hit by the iceberg for damage and high base knockback, although this is unlikely to result in a KO, especially inUltimate where the knockback is more vertical. Contact with the ground to the right side will result in being carried away to the rightblastline and being KO'ed. It is possible to jump off of the ground on the right side in spite of its speed, but this must be done very quickly.

Eventually, the peak splashes into water, reducing the possibility of getting KO'd on the bottom blastlines; however, the water is also where thefish lives. Originating fromBalloon Fight, the fish is a major hazard on this stage; players who fall in the water must quickly jump out, as any character that remains in the water too long will be eaten by the fish,KOing them. The fish's body will also deal heavy damage and knockback to bystanders. Little segments of ice will also float by in the water; standing on these can help avoid the fish. InUltimate, it is now possible to escape from the fish's mouth bybutton mashing. The number of inputs required to escape is based on the formula90 + 1.7p (wherep is the captured fighter's percent) and is reduced by 8 for every stick input and 14.4 for every button input, causing a release when the value reaches or passes zero. Another hazard is thePolar Bear, who sometimes jumps up and stomps the iceberg, causing it to sink into the water by varying amounts, before rising up again after a moment. After a while, the iceberg flies back up, with the mountain forming beneath it, and the stage cycle repeats.

Ω form and Battlefield form[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, theΩ form andBattlefield form are set on a floating iceberg that is the same size and shape asFinal Destination andBattlefield, respectively. The three soft platforms in the Battlefield form are based on the metallic platforms in the normal form. The fish, icicle, and vegetables are removed and the stage does not slide.

Hazards off[edit]

Withhazards off inUltimate, the fish does not appear, the ice platform cannot be destroyed, the icicles don't fall, the left platform never falls from standing on it, the ice block and cloud platforms never appear, the polar bear won't sink the platform further into the water, and the slight reduction in stage gravity while the iceberg slides down the mountain does not occur. Notably, the entire stage cycle still occurs, and touching the side of the iceberg as it slides down the mountain still deals damage.

Origin[edit]

While this stage doesn't come directly fromIce Climber, there are elements in this stage that do come fromIce Climber. InIce Climber, there are points in the game where the player has to jump on clouds that move across the stage and act as a moving platform. The first part of this stage features a cloud that floats by and acts as a moving platform. One of the enemies inIce Climber arePolar Bears. If a player takes too long to beat a level, the Polar Bear will appear and jump to make the screen scroll up. In this stage, when the stage is in the water, a Polar Bear can be seen in the background. The Polar Bear jumps and makes the stage go deeper in the water.

The mountain summit itself seems to be derived from the summit as shown on the Japanese box art ofIce Climber, including the presence of the Polar Bear, although the Topi and Condor aren't there.

A bonus stage inIce Climber.

In the later levels ofIce Climber, there are icicles that start forming and dropping on the player. If the player gets hit by an icicle, the player loses a life. The icicles that form and drop are retained on this stage (including retaining the "falling" sound effect). Additionally, the stage may also be based on the bonus stages. If the player wants to get bonuses at the end of each level inIce Climber, the player has to get all the vegetables near the top of the mountain, which is depicted much closer to the Smash stage than any other level, and complete the level within a set forty second time limit. The vegetables that are shown for each level are eggplants, carrots, cabbages, cucumbers, corn, turnips, pumpkins, Chinese cabbages, potatoes, and mushrooms. In this stage, these vegetables can appear and can be eaten to heal some damage.

InBalloon Fight, there is a giantfish that can eat characters if they get too close to the water, or if they fall in the water after all their balloons have been popped. This giant fish can be seen in this stage when a player is close to the edge of the stage, or when a player jumps in the water. If the player doesn't get out of the way in time, the fish will jump out of the water and eat them.

Tournament legality[edit]

This stage isbanned in tournaments, due to ungrabbable edges, slippery surfaces, and powerfulcamping spots at the bottom of the stage, as well as thefish stage hazard. Also, the blue ice platform and the leftmost platform allow for wallinfinites.

Trivia[edit]

  • Neither the fish nor the polar bear have their own trophy inBrawl, despite the presence of trophies for most other stage elements. This is also the case with theUltimate Chimera.
  • If playing the songIce Climber (Brawl), the stage will synchronize with the music. However, the music doesn't start playing after theannouncer says "GO!". This means that the music will only synchronize on the first cycle. Afterwards, the stage will be faster than the music. This also holds true for theIcicle Mountain (Melee) song.
  • Despite Sakurai's description of this stage as the top ofIcicle Mountain, its appearance is inconsistent with the Icicle Mountain stage seen inSuper Smash Bros. Melee. This especially considers that the setting of Icicle Mountain inMelee is described as the "Infinite Glacier". However, an iceberg can be seen in the background of Icicle Mountain, which shows that the "Infinite Glacier" is not very infinite at all.
  • IfSonic has aBunny Hood,Superspicy Curry, and aSuper Mushroom during a Giant Brawl, he can outrun the iceberg on Summit.
  • If the player holds theshield button anytime before landing on the space in front of the iceberg while it is sliding, the character willperfect shield upon landing, resulting in no damage taken.
  • Should the fish attempt to swallowWario-Man, it will just pass him without swallowing.
  • When the camera zooms in on the fish while a player has been swallowed, it will show the middle of the fish.
  • In the PAL region version ofSmash 4,Temple's Spanish name was originally the same as this stage's Spanish name, "La Cúspide". A patch later corrected Temple's name to "Templo", the same name used inMelee andBrawl.
  • The stage's mountain is actuallyfully rendered at all times, with the stage loading different backgrounds depending on the main stage's location.
  • InUltimate, the followingAssist Trophies can only appear on the Battlefield and Omega forms of this stage:Thwomp,Kapp'n,Devil and theSquid Sisters. Additionally,Lunala andMarshadow can only be summoned on the stage's Battlefield and Omega forms.
  • Steve picks up ice blocks in place of dirt blocks on this stage.
  • Popo and Nana walking normally on the ice instead of sliding around contrasts how they originally did slide around on the icy levels inIce Climber.
