Staryu, (ヒトデマン,Hitodeman), is a creature in thePokémon media franchise.
Origin[edit]
Staryu is a Water-type Pokémon introduced inGeneration I, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #120 as the "Star Shape Pokémon". It evolves intoStarmie by using a Water Stone, and it is one ofMisty's Pokémon both in the games and the animated series.
Swift is a special Normal-type move with 60 base power and perfect accuracy, which Staryu can learn naturally in every game.
BetweenMelee andSmash 4, Staryu's voice clips came from episodes of thePokémon anime. One fromThe Water Flowers of Cerulean City was used in the Japanese versions ofMelee andBrawl and every version ofSmash 4. A different one fromBye Bye Psyduck was used in the non-Japanese versions ofMelee (except the French version, which has a different clip) andBrawl.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon[edit]
Staryu appears inSuper Smash Bros. Melee out ofPoké Balls, replacingStarmie fromSuper Smash Bros. Once released it flies around looking for an opponent to target, and upon finding it it remains stationary and attacks with Swift, shooting a stream of stars that deal 1%. Its attack can be easily DI'd out of. Touching Staryu while it's attacking also deals 13% damage.
Staryu has a spawn chance of30/583.
Trophy[edit]
Staryu features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the trophies that can be collected randomly throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches.

Staryu appears inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl out of Poké Balls in a reprisal of its previous role and behavior. It appears to move faster than the last game, making more difficult to avoid, and also seems to have a quicker rate of fire.
Staryu has a spawn chance of30/586.

If it loses appendages, it can regenerate them right away. It can use Camouflage, which lets it change its type to match the surrounding terrain. If a Water Stone is used on it, it evolves into Starmie.

Staryu reappears inSuper Smash Bros. 4 as a Poké Ball Pokémon, keeping its previous function, though its attack speed was visibly reduced.
Staryu has a spawn chance of32/975. It cannot be summoned on the following stages in a standard versus match (applies to both games and only the base form unless noted otherwise):
Trophy[edit]
Staryu's trophy appears in both versions. InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U it is part of thePokémonTrophy Box.

- This Water-type Pokémon, Staryu, greatly resembles a star. Exposing one to a Water Stone causes it to evolve into Starmie. Another star-shaped Pokémon, Cleffa, exists, but the two don't look all that similar. In Smash Bros., Staryu will attack foes with Swift. Anyone hit will be seeing stars!

:Pokémon X & Pokémon Y (10/2013)- This Water-type Pokémon evolves into Starmie when you use a Water Stone. Its star shape makes it rather cute, but that doesn't mean Staryu's not a threat. Its Swift attack will pummel fighters with a flurry of stars. If you notice Staryu's aiming at you, quickly move up or down to get out of the line of fire!

Staryu once again returns as a Poké Ball Pokémon inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, behaving as it did inSmash 4. While not directly changed, its shots link into each other more reliably due to the increased hitlag inUltimate.

Spirit[edit]
Staryu also appears as a Novice-classprimary spirit.
Staryu's Spirit Battle uses a yellowRosalina & Luma puppet fighter and is fought onTortimer Island. Rosalina starts with a Poké Ball containing Staryu and autoheals over time, referencing Staryu'sRecover move. Additionally, the only items that spawn areStar Rods.

- Staryu is one of two Poké Ball Pokémon to replace a member of their evolution-line in later installments, the other beingWeezing.
- Staryu replaced its evolved formStarmie fromMelee onwards, because it was most likely based onMisty's Staryu from thePokémon anime.Misty used to have both Pokémon on her team at the time ofSmash 64, but she only had Staryu since she had left her Starmie at her gym beforeMelee was released. Misty also used Staryu more often than Starmie regardless.
