Callie (アオリ,Aori) andMarie (ホタル,Hotaru) are supporting characters in and major mascots of theSplatoon franchise. Together, they make up theSquid Sisters (シオカラーズ,Sea o' Colors) pop duo. They areInklings, but unlike most Inklings, they have a main hair color each that rarely changes. Despite being called the "Squid Sisters", they are actually cousins.
Origin[edit]
In the originalSplatoon, Callie and Marie are a pair of pop idols who hostInkopolis News, where they announce what stages are available for online multiplayer as well as giving information on updates andSplatfests. During Splatfests, Callie and Marie can be seen inInkopolis Plaza performing their songCity of Color atop trucks, much like their Assist Trophy function, although each Squid Sister has their own truck rather than performing on the same stage, due to each of them representing one of the two Splatfest teams. These concerts can also be viewed through the use of theiramiibo. Additionally, Callie and Marie appear in the fourth and fifth worlds of the game's story mode inOcto Valley, disguised as Agent 1 and Agent 2 respectively of theNew Squidbeak Splatoon, where they replace their grandfatherCap'n Cuttlefish as the player's allies after he is kidnapped byDJ Octavio; in the final phase of the final boss battle against Octavio, Agents 1 and 2 reveal their identities and override Octavio's speakers with their own song,Calamari Inkantation, distracting Octavio and giving Cuttlefish enough strength to break free from his ropes and begin dancing. After Octavio's defeat, the Squid Sisters host a special broadcast of Inkopolis News and decide to perform another of their songs,Maritime Memory, which is heard as the credits roll.
InSplatoon 2, Callie and Marie's role from the first game is taken byPearl andMarina ofOff the Hook. Marie has a major role in the story mode inOcto Canyon, where she assists the player throughout the game, while Callie, kidnapped and brainwashed by DJ Octavio, serves as part of the final boss. However, partway through the final boss fight, Marie is able to free Callie from DJ Octavio's mind control. For the final phase of the fight, they perform together on a stage similar to the one seen inSuper Smash Bros., albeit situated atop a flying truck. As of the 3.0 update ofSplatoon 2, players are able to speak with Callie and Marie in Octo Canyon after completing the final battle, learning statistics about their performance in online multiplayer as well as various tidbits about the characters themselves.
InSplatoon 3, Callie and Marie both have a major role in that game's story mode, once again assisting the player. This time they formed the "New New Squidbeak Splatoon" led by the former Agent 3 (The player character from the first game) and recruit the player to become the new Agent 3. While on a mission to rescue Cuttlefish, they had a run in with the groupDeep Cut, who at first attempted to battle them over uncovered parts of a contraption but later decided to work with the Squid Sisters. In the end, both the Squid Sisters and Deep Cut help out the new Agent 3 during their battle againstMr. Grizz.

The Squid Sisters appear collectively as anAssist Trophy character inUltimate. When they are summoned, they appear in the middle of the stage (teleporting if not there already), and perform a live concert.Moray Towers is an exception, as they will teleport to the lowest level instead. As they are performing, the camera zooms in on them, theblast lines shrinking as a result, making it easier for players to be KO'd, similar to the game'sSudden Death. Once the song finishes, the duo disappears, and the camera returns back to normal. They both say "Stay fresh!" in the Inkling language when summoned, which are reused voice clips fromSplatoon.
During the performance, the Squid Sisters will perform one of two songs:Calamari Inkantation orInk Me Up. Each is accompanied by a unique dance.
The Squid Sisters will not appear if a fighter is in Final Smash standby and, if a Final Smash is activated during the concert (such as by theFinal Smash Meter filling), the duo will instantly disappear.

Both Squid Sisters appear asDLCMii Costumes, with Callie being aMii Brawler and Marie being aMii Gunner equipped with theHero Shot'sSplatoon 2 design. Both were added in the Challenger Pack 6 from the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, along withNinjara,Heihachi andVault Boy Mii Costumes.

As a spirit[edit]
The Squid Sisters also appear as a Legend-classsupport spirit.
The Squid Sisters can besummoned using the cores ofBlooper,Meloetta (Aria Forme), andOuendan Cheerleaders. Also, they can be obtained by using their individualamiibo.
The Squid Sisters use an army ofInkling puppet fighters and are fought on theMoray Towers stage. During the battle, the Squid Sisters appear as a hostile Assist Trophy while the player becomes easy to launch.

Trivia[edit]
- If the gameplay speed is lowered, the Squid Sisters will remain dancing at full speed, and will be on screen for the same amount of time. However, the screen zooming is proportionally slowed down, resulting in it being less effective at lower speeds.
- DespiteSplatoon featuring a playable character in theInklings and being a Nintendo-created and owned property, the Squid Sisters' placement in the Assist Trophy category inTraining Mode and theSound Test comes after the Assist Trophies from first and second-party universes without playable characters, and before the Assist Trophies from third-party universes.
- The Squid Sisters were the only Assist Trophy unaffected byIsabelle'sFishing Rodglitch. If attempted, only one would spawn, and Isabelle would keep opening the Assist Trophy, but nothing would come out. This is likely due to their mechanic of zooming in the stage, and the game either putting a limit as to how far it can be zoomed in (similar to the one seen whentaking a picture) or inadvertently not wanting to zoom in so far as to have it glitch and crash. However, theDevil, whose mechanic also involves moving the camera, was able to be summoned multiple times; that said, moving the camera to a different position is different from zooming in on an object.
- Callie being a Brawler costume and Marie being a Gunner costume is a reference to theirweapon preferences inSplatoon, with Callie favoring the meleeRoller weapons, and Marie favoring the long-rangedChargers.
