Smashville (すま村,Smash Village) is a stage inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl,Super Smash Bros. for Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate based on theAnimal Crossing franchise. Players battle on a platform with a moving horizontal jump-through platform suspended above anAnimal Crossing town while spectators watch on. Villager is fought here for his unlocking battle inUltimate.

Stage overview[edit]

Smashville's only dynamic element is a floatingsoft platform that moves from side to side over the stage.

The stage is home to numerousbackground characters from theAnimal Crossing series and features aday-night cycle that runs according to the console's internal clock. On Saturday evenings, the stage thatK.K. Slider performs on will be set up at 7:30 PM and he will perform his concert from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM Sunday. Other background characters spectate the fight (see#Background characters), reacting to KOs and visibly favoring one fighter or another.

Small, red balloons sometimes float overhead, carryingfood items if they are enabled (even if the overallitem frequency is set to "none"). The balloons can be popped with one hit. Moves that change once hitting a hurtbox will interact with the balloons, such asBouncing Fish.

Ω forms and Battlefield form[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, the moving platform, background characters and balloons do not appear in theΩ form. Additionally, the stage is increased in length somewhat to match that ofFinal Destination.

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Ω form andBattlefield form are similar toSSB4's Ω form; however, the main platform is resized and reshaped to matchFinal Destination andBattlefield, respectively. The threesoft platforms of the Battlefield form are based on the soft platform of the normal form.

Hazards Off[edit]

With hazards off inUltimate, balloons no longer appear and the moving platform stays in the middle above the primary platform. Oddly, the platform does notstart in this position, and moves from the right to the middle at the start of each battle.

Background characters[edit]

The following characters appear in the background of Smashville:

The characters that appear on the stage come in 25 configurations. The 25 configurations are split into groups of 5 for each of the 5 divisions of the day.

The positions characters will appear at given the position number (The Roost positions not included).

Notes for the following table:

  • Unless otherwise noted, a listed character appears in everySmash game
  • A dash indicates no character
  • Characters in position 5 and 6 will sit at The Roost if it appears

Origin[edit]

A Town inWild World.

Animal Crossing games predominantly take place in a small town, characterized by features such astrees, rocks, flowers, ariver withbridges, and awaterfall, which are all present in the background of the stage. The game series' town structures serve as the basis for the town in the background of this stage:

BuildingOrigin GamePurpose
Able SistersAnimal CrossingA clothing and tailoring shop, where the player can design their own clothing and umbrellas.
Animal Villager HousesDoubutsu no Mori (design fromAnimal Crossing: Wild World)The residences of the non-playable villager characters.
MuseumAnimal CrossingAn initially-empty museum, which can be filled by the player by donating bugs, fish, fossils, and works of art. It also includes an observatory, where constellations can be designed, and The Roost, a coffee shop.
Player'sHouseDoubutsu no Mori (design fromWild World)The player's residence, which can be expanded and decorated with wallpaper, carpeting, and furniture.
Town HallAnimal Crossing: Wild WorldThe main building for the town's civic duties; the player can pay their debt to Tom Nook, deposit and withdraw money, mail letters, dispose of unwanted items, etc.

This stage draws heavily fromWild World; however, there are some notable exceptions to this, such as the absence of Tom Nook's store, a central building in theAnimal Crossing series. Additionally, the Town Gate, which appears inWild World, is not featured in this stage. The backdrop includes various elements likeKapp'n's taxi, Gulliver's flying saucer, and Pete, the mailman, flying across the sky. At night, players can see constellations in the sky, which resemble those found in the museum's observatory and are designed by players.

In theAnimal Crossing series, players occasionally seeballoons floating over their town, carrying apresent. Starting fromWild World, players can use a slingshot to pop the balloon; however, in the originalAnimal Crossing game, players must wait for the balloon to land on a tree and then shake it. In this stage, balloons pop when attacked and, when items are enabled, containfood.

K.K. Slider is a dog musician inAnimal Crossing who performs every Saturday at 8:00 PM. Players can request a song or ask him to play a random song. In this stage, K.K. Slider can be heard playing one of his songs if the player plays from 8:00 p.m. to midnight on a Saturday. The songs he performs on this stage are the same ones found in theAnimal Crossing games.

The stage underwent a visual redesign inUltimate, taking inspiration from otherAnimal Crossing games, such as curved bridges fromAnimal Crossing: City Folk along with wispy and transparent clouds fromAnimal Crossing: New Leaf. Additionally, there are minor changes, such as the repositioning of certain objects and the inclusion of new types of flowers and fruit trees.

Tournament legality[edit]

InBrawl this stage is a starter in tournaments because of its simple layout and lack of stage hazards. It is one of the threeBrawl stages legal in Japan; the others areBattlefield andFinal Destination.

The 2017 recommended ruleset forSSB4 also lists this stage as a starter in tournaments, for the same reasons as inBrawl.

Most rulesets forUltimate keep the stage as a starter, as it still lacks any dangerous stage hazards. However, it should be noted that due to disabling stage hazards also disabling the platform moving, gameplay on Smashville is different than in previous games.

Trivia[edit]

  • This is the only stage from a fighter-based universe to debut before any of its fighters.
  • The Town Hall clock shows the actual time from the console's internal clock.
  • The name "Smashville" takes advantage of the fact that, in theAnimal Crossing series, players can name their own town, so it is named after the name of the game.
    • Prior toAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, it was impossible to name a town "Smashville" in anyAnimal Crossing game, as "Smashville" is ten letters long, and the maximum number of characters allowed was eight. As ofNew Horizons, the limit has been increased to ten, making "Smashville" a valid name.
  • The Japanese name of the stage,すま村 (Sumamura), is a pun onスマブラ (Sumabura), the Japanese abbreviation for "Smash Bros."
    • Incidentally, the romanized Japanese namecan be the name of a town in the priorAnimal Crossing games, being eight letters long.
  • InBrawl andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, Kapp'n's taxi drives through a tree upon leaving the Town Hall. It stays there for a few seconds before restarting the cycle. This has been fixed inUltimate by moving the tree out of its path.
  • InBrawl andfor Wii U, the sign in front of the Able Sister's shop is not translated; it is written in French, as the sign appears in the Japanese versions ofAnimal Crossing. This has been fixed inUltimate.
  • Infor Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, theBoxing Ring stage lists theVillager's character title as "Mayor of Smashville", a reference to this stage.
  • Contrary to the "2:00 a.m." song's original use inAnimal Crossing: Wild World, in which it played exclusively at nighttime, in the Smashville stage, it is a regular song that plays during the day.
    • When the stage is set at night when K.K. Slider performs, however, the 2:00 a.m. song will be unable to play.
  • This is the only past stage infor Wii U that does not use normalcrates.
  • Despite taking several design cues fromAnimal Crossing: Wild World, the stage's game of origin was changed fromAnimal Crossing: Wild World to simplyAnimal Crossing infor Wii U andUltimate.
  • InUltimate, this is one of the few stages where everyAssist Trophy can appear.
  • There are several errors in thefor Wii U andUltimate iterations of this stage compared to theBrawl iteration:
    • Infor Wii U andUltimate, Villagers in position 4 don't appear when "The Roost" is present when only positions 5 and 6 should be affected.
    • Infor Wii U andUltimate, Villager's looking direction will randomly reset to pointing forward instead of towards a fighter for aframe or two.
    • InBrawl, the villagers use a "happiness/contentment" expression when walking in place while infor Wii U andUltimate they use a "surprise/amazement" expression.
      • This is possibly anoff-by-one error as in the files the former has an index of 5 while the latter has an index of 6.
