Hungrybox is asmasher from Buenos Aires,Argentina who currently resides in Orlando,Florida. Known as aJigglypuff player across multipleSuper Smash Bros. titles, he is best known for his career inSuper Smash Bros. Melee, and is often consideredone of the greatestMelee players of all time. He is one of the "Five Gods" ofMelee, the greatestMeleeJigglypuff player of all time, and holds the most major wins inMelee. He was especially infamous for his sheer dominance in the competitive scene as the best player in the world from 2017 to 2019 and for his near-10-year streak where, afterThe Big House 4 in October 2014, he placed top 8 at every offline event he attended untilTipped Off 15: Connected in June 2024. He is also one half of the "Plupbox" duo (along withPlup), which is considered to be one of the greatestMeleedoubles teams of all time.

Hungrybox is also known for being the bestProject MJigglypuff player, notably winning the firstProject M major atMELEE-FC10R Legacy. In addition, he has found some success inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, where he is considered one of the best Jigglypuff players in North America. He is best known inUltimate for winning the Jigglypuff ditto againstBassMage atLost Tech City 2022, and has also defeatedRFang atFrostbite 2020 andomega atCEO 2023.

He was one of the smashers to be sponsored byTeam Curse before it eventually merged withTeam Liquid, being picked up by said team on April 17th, 2014. Hungrybox was also previously sponsored byCLASH Tournaments.

Outside of competition, Hungrybox is one of the most popularSmash streamers and content creators onTwitch andYouTube, with over 500,000 subscribers on the latter platform. Early career and becoming a God[edit]

Hungrybox's firstMelee events were at free-for-all events, which he attended alongside his friendCrunch, before he began attending double-elimination events in 2007. Beginning as aNess player, Hungrybox eventually swapped toJigglypuff, inspired by a moment when he watched his brother land aRest inSmash 64. Within months, he was already placing in the money, with his first money placement being atTwilight Showdown 6, where he placed 3rd. He continued to place in the money at monthlies and placed well at regionals for the rest of the year and into the new year. His most notable performance during this time took place atEvent 52: Kansas, where he four-stockedMew2King, then considered one of the best players in the world, in a money match, though he ultimately lost the match. Nevertheless, Hungrybox eventually became one of the bestSmash players in Florida.

2009 became the year that established Hungrybox as a top player. He made his first major appearance atRevival of Melee in March, where he lost toPC Chris in winners' bracket but defeatedKoreanDJ in losers' bracket to make it to losers' top 8, before losing toChuDat to place 7th. His breakout event, however, took place a few months later atGENESIS. After losing toMango early, Hungrybox swept the Losers bracket, defeating many notable players includingDarc,DaShizWiz,Darkrain 2-1,Scar 2-0, and finallyZhu 3-2 in losers' semis before losing to Mango 0-3 to place 3rd. Hungrybox then surpassed this performance within a few months by winningRevival of Melee 2, defeatingHax 2-0,Cactuar 2-0,Kage, andDr. PeePee 3-1 twice, and claiming the first major win of his career. These three results especially established Hungrybox as one of the fastest-rising players in competitive play, as he was able to establish himself as one of the era's best players within the span of a year, alongsideArmada, Mango, and Mew2King. With Dr. PeePee's rise to join their ranks in the following year, the five players eventually dominated competitive play for the next several years, and as such were referred to as the Five Gods ofMelee.

Hungrybox's career hit a career highlight in the following year, where he made Grand Finals at every single event he attended until November. This included a streak of victories that lasted fromNOOB 2 in April toTipped Off 6 in October, and included a victory atApex 2010, which retrospectively became Hungrybox's first supermajor win. Alongside other incredible performances that year, such as placing 2nd atPound 4 losing only to Mango, the retrospective rankingRetroSSBMRank considered Hungrybox as the best player of the year.

Unfortunately, Hungrybox's time at the top would not last for very long, as after his victory at Apex 2010, he would not win another major event for four and a half years, and would often be eliminated by one of the other Gods. He especially struggled against both Mango and hisFox and Armada and hisYoung Link during this time; Hungrybox was only able to defeat Mango at two events, and Armada at three. In addition, Hungrybox also took losses against several players outside the top 5, includingKirbyKaze 1-2 atApex 2012,ChuDat 2-3 atZenith 2012, and, most infamously,Wobbles 1-2 atEVO 2013, with both players not knowing the set was a best of 3 until EVO founder Tom Cannon intervened prior to them starting the fourth set.

On the other hand, Hungrybox still found some success during this time. Though he lacked a major win, he was able to win several smaller events, with some of them featuring the other Gods. These victories includeZenith 2011, which he won over Mew2King, andNorCal Regionals 2013, which marked one of the few times Hungrybox defeated Mango during this time. Furthermore, Hungrybox continued to place top 8 at every event he entered, and would often make it to Grand Finals, including atApex 2012,Zenith 2013,The Big House 4, andEVO 2014. His performance at the latter event especially surprised everyone, as he defeated Dr. PeePee, now going by PPMD, and Armada twice, finally overcoming the Young Link matchup. He ultimately fell to Mango twice, but went game 5 both times.

Nevertheless, in the first half of the decade, Hungrybox was considered one of the weakest Gods. This was showcased on the first two full-yearSSBMRank rankings, where Hungrybox was ranked 5th, but as the lowest-ranking God.

Gameplay improvements and EVO victory[edit]

After many years of coming close, Hungrybox finally won his first major since Apex 2010 atParagon Orlando 2015. After defeatingArmada and his new Jigglypuff counterpick,Fox, 3-2, he was able to defeatMew2King twice, defeating him 3-1 in Winners Finals and 3-0 in Grand Finals, to win the event. However, aside from this victory and a few smaller wins atBad Moon Rising andGet On My Level 2015, it seemed like Paragon was going to be an outlier, as Hungrybox's other results remained underwhelming: his losing streak against Armada resumed, this time with Armada playing Fox, and he took additional losses toPewPewU atApex 2015 andWestballz atSandstorm. His last two majors of the first half of the 2015 season especially saw him be double-eliminated by Fox, as Hungrybox lost toLucky andSFAT atPress Start and Armada andMango atCEO 2015. As such, despite winning a major at the start of the year, Hungrybox was still ranked 5th on theSummer 2015 SSBMRank.

Unsatisfied with his performances against Fox and his gameplay in general, after CEO 2015 Hungrybox began practicing with his longtime friendCrunch. Their coaching sessions became incredibly successful and was what allowed Hungrybox to finally rise out of his stagnancy. This was first showcased atEVO 2015, where after losing to Armada 2-1, Hungrybox was able to make it to Grand Finals for a rematch, notably defeating Mango in the process. Though he placed 2nd, he was able to bring the match to game 5. His results remained incredible from here on out, and he placed top 3 at every major he attended for the rest of the year. Aside from an early loss toProfessor Pro atParagon Los Angeles 2015, he would not lose to another player outside the top 6, and would improve his record against Fox players, including defeating Mango again atThe Big House 5 and winning his runback against SFAT atParagon Los Angeles 2015. Unfortunately, he continued to lose to Armada during this time, including being double-eliminated atThe Big House 5.

Hungrybox's efforts to improve his gameplay culminated in his performance atDreamHack Winter 2015, where not only was he able to win this event, but he was able to defeat Armada twice, first in Winners Finals and again in the Grand Finals reset. This victory was an especially emotional moment for Hungrybox, who after the interview said that his biological father, who had passed away recently and was estranged from Hungrybox, had told Hungrybox that he would never be the best, and that Hungrybox's victory at the event acted as a closure to his father's statement. At the end of the season, Hungrybox would shoot to 2nd on theSSBMRank 2015, the highest he had ever ranked on the SSBMRank.

DreamHack Winter 2015 was a turning point in Hungrybox's career, as in the following year he became the prime challenger to Armada's throne by winning a slew of majors, which included winningBattle of the Five Gods, where he defeated Armada and Mango in the reset. The best performance of Hungrybox's season, however, took place atEVO 2016. After being the runner-up for the last two EVO events, Hungrybox was hoping to finally claim his first EVO title. Unfortunately, he was sent into Losers early byPlup 0-2, and had to claw his way through the Losers bracket, defeating Mango 2-1 and Plup in the runback 3-1, to face Armada once again in Grand Finals. After going up 2-0, Armada was able to bring the set to game 5, and was posed to take the last game, as well as the entire tournament, with a full stock lead on Hungrybox; however, Hungrybox was able to clutch out a combo into "theRest heard around the world" to reset the bracket. After four more grueling games, Hungrybox was able to decisively defeat Armada in the final game to win his first EVO title, leading Hungrybox to emotionally pop-off across the stage.

Though Hungrybox held two incredible supermajor wins under his belt that season, Armada remained the best player on theSSBMRank 2016, as Armada was still able to best Hungrybox at most of their encounters, including defeating Hungrybox in Grand Finals atSmash Summit 2,Smash Summit 3, andDreamHack Winter 2016. Nevertheless, Hungrybox became posed to take the throne from Armada in the following season, especially as he chose to quit his full-time job to pursueMelee full-time.

Dominance[edit]

However, it seemed like the status quo would remain at the start of theSSBMRank 2017 season. Though Hungrybox continued to win many events,Armada was able to win the biggest event at the start of the yearGENESIS 4, and bested Hungrybox atSmash Summit Spring 2017. As such, Hungrybox was once again ranked 2nd on theSummer 2017 SSBMRank. Further making this race difficult wasArmada's victory atEVO 2017, meaning he had won three of the largest events up to that point.

Hungrybox retaliated by winning every single event for the rest of the season, starting withShine 2017. This included winning the three largest events after EVO 2017, namelyGameTyrant Expo 2017,The Big House 7, andSmash Summit 5, besting Armada at all three events. His sheer dominance in the second half of the year was enough for Hungrybox to finally claim the #1 title from Armada, becoming the third player to rank #1 on the SSBMRank in the process.

The following year continued Hungrybox's dominance in competitiveMelee to the point where no one came remotely close to touching his throne. Out of the fourteen majors in the 2018 season, Hungrybox won 8 of them, including the supermajorsThe Big House 8 andSmash Summit 7; conversely, no player that year had more than two major wins, with Armada being the only player to have more than one. In fact, it seemed like Armada was the closest player to matching Hungrybox, as by the end of the year Armada had defeated Hungrybox in ever single set they played save for their Losers Finals set atLow Tier City 6. However, Armada retired in September, and as such there were little players who were able to challenge Hungrybox for the rest of the season. Though Hungrybox lost to eight other players that year, he ended up with positive records over all of them, and despite failing to win 6 other majors, he was often the runner-up, with his lowest placement being 4th atSmash Summit 6 andEVO 2018. That wasn't to say there were a few hiccups. Notably, this year marked Hungrybox's first losses toaMSa andZain, with Zain double-eliminating Hungrybox to winShine 2018. Though Hungrybox remained positive on both players by the end of the year, these two players would gradually give Hungrybox more trouble in the future.

2019 remained a strong year or Hungrybox; however, cracks were beginning to show. Though he won the first two majors of the year, includinghis first-ever GENESIS title, he wouldn't win another major for the rest of the half-year season, and in fact was able to make Grand Finals at one other major. Conversely, he developed a new bracket demon:Wizzrobe. Wizzrobe first eliminated Hungrybox 2-3 atGet On My Level 2019 for 5th, but was better known for double-eliminating Hungrybox atSmash 'N' Splash 5 to win the entire event. This made Wizzrobe a contender for Hungrybox's #1 position by the half-year ranking. Further hurting Hungrybox's season was his 1-2 loss toAlbert atLow Tier City 7, which became Hungrybox's first unranked lost in years. In spite of these negatives, Hungrybox was still ranked #1 on theSummer 2019 MPGR; however it was only by a hair, as Hungrybox's final score was imperfect (99.8).

Hungrybox was able to clean up his act at the following few majors, winningShine 2019 andMainstage and placing 2nd atSuper Smash Con 2019 andMango's Birthday Bash; these performances were enough for Hungrybox to rank #1 on the full-year ranking, becoming the first player to rank 1st on three consecutive rankings. Challengers remained, however:Leffen was able to get the best of Hungrybox at many events throughout the year, while both Leffen andMang0 won the most important events in the second half of the year. As such, 2019 became the most difficult year for Hungrybox's title defense.

2020 was the final year where Hungrybox was still at least in contention for the best in the world. Though he lostGENESIS 7 toZain, he was able to winSmash Summit 9 a few weeks later.

OtherSmash games[edit]

Brawl[edit]

While Hungrybox didn't actively playSuper Smash Bros. Brawl during its popular days, he was known to have a rather competentJigglypuff in it despite Jigglypuff's drastic nerfs and his own lack of practice in it, to the point that he was considered one of the best Jigglypuff players inBrawl. Hungrybox was once ranked on theFlorida Power Rankings forBrawl using a combination ofKing Dedede and Jigglypuff.

Smash 4[edit]

Hungrybox, however, was rather active inSuper Smash Bros. 4, though he did not take the game as seriously asMelee. His first experience with the game was at theSuper Smash Bros. Invitational, where he was one of the 16 invited players. He ultimately placed 2nd withKirby, losing to futureSmash 4 championZeRo in Grand Finals. At the tournament's end, he infamously challengedNintendo of America President and COOReggie Fils-Aimé to aFor Glory-style match after he had teased possible future Nintendo-sponsored tournaments. Fils-Aimé declined, admitting that he "sucks at Smash", but that his "opportunity was coming withSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS." He concluded his response by saying he would "come back next time and kick [Hungrybox's] ass," to the amusement of the audience. One year later, Fils-Aimé and Hungrybox made a special appearance in the 2015 Nintendo World Championships, and played the promised match, Hungrybox using Jigglypuff, and Fils-Aimé usingRyu. Hungrybox took the win by a very large margin, leading Reggie to comment how "[he spent] 16 hours a day running a company. [Hungrybox spent] 16 hours a day playing Smash." The trash talk between the two, as well as the set itself, later became recurring jokes within both theSmash community and Reggie's fanbase.

Following the game's release, Hungrybox continued to playJigglypuff. One of his earliest-known sets took place againstDiddy Kong playerPlayer-1 atParagon Orlando 2015 in the early months of competitiveWii U, whenHungrybox prematurely quit from the set following Manny repeatedly chanting "Hoo-hah" in the crowd during the final game, in reference to Diddy Kong's infamous combo that existed prior to patch 1.0.6. This game, alongside Manny's chant, became closely tied to Diddy Kong's metagame in the early metagame, and remained a recurring meme in Hungrybox's fanbase. Hungrybox's most notable performance inSmash 4 was his performance atCEO 2015 doubles, where he teamed withZeRo to place 3rd. They performed various team combos leading into Jigglypuff'sRest, defeating high-level teams such asLarry Lurr/Tyrant andStaticManny/Dabuz, notably defeating Dabuz in a 1v1 situation. Finally, Hungrybox also notably defeatedFatality at the 2016 Georgia regionalDivine Intervention, becoming the first Jigglypuff player to defeat aPGR-ranked player.

Overall, however, Hungrybox found little success with Jigglypuff, in part due to it being considered one of the worst characters in the game. At one point, he announced he was dropping Jigglypuff, commenting how it did not fit his playstyle, and announced he was going to switch toNess; however, he instead committed himself toMario for some time before returning to using Jigglypuff, which remained his main for the rest of competitiveSmash 4.

Ultimate[edit]

Although Hungrybox still took competitiveSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate less seriously thanMelee, he remained incredibly active in the game, both in competitive play and in the community. In the early metagame, he regularly made commentary appearances atUltimate events, including atCEO 2019, and had some early tournament success, such as placing 25th atSmash Conference United. He became more optimistic about his future performance inUltimate afterJigglypuff received buffs in update 6.0.0; shortly after, he placed 13th atGENESIS: BLACK, and a few months later, defeated his firstPGRU-ranked player by upsettingRFang in pools atFrostbite 2020.

In the post-pandemic metagame, Hungrybox found even greater success inUltimate, especially in the second half of 2022, when he saw several solid superregional performances such as placing 17th atLost Tech City 2022 and 25th atRiptide 2022. In the former event, he defeatedBassMage, the best Jigglypuff player in the world, in pools with a 2-1 victory. Thanks to these performances, Hungrybox was eventually ranked 199th on theOrionRank 2022 North America. Later, he also defeatedomega atCEO 2023 and found some success during Japan's Golden Week in 2023, including placing 49th at bothMaesuma TOP 12 andDELTA 4 and defeating Japanese talent such asFloyd andShissho.

Finally, throughout his career, Hungrybox also became notorious for going to the final game against many prominentUltimate players. Notable examples include going to game 3 againstSalem at Smash Conference United and going to game 5 againstMiya atCirque Du CFL 3.

During theCOVID-19 pandemic, Hungrybox took an active role in streaming and hosting online events, beginning withThe Box, a massive online event that went on to become the largestSmash event of all time when including DQs. He then began hosting weeklies and monthly events alongsideTeam Liquid, aptly titled "The Box: Juice Box" and "The Box: Lunch Box", and The Box eventually became one of the largest tournament series in the online metagame. Though the series eventually died out with the return of offline competitive play in 2021, it was eventually revived after Team Liquid partnered with Coinbase to formThe Coinbox, which went on to become the premier online series during the post-pandemic metagame, with many of the game's best players regularly competing in the event, especiallySparg0 andSonix, and the series often being compared to Japan'sSmashmate. His efforts in hosting online events were lauded by many in theUltimate community, and helped him become a notable figurehead in the community despite primarily being aMelee player.

Content-wise, Hungrybox notably performed a "90-dayUltimate detox", where he attributed his performance decline inMelee to also playingUltimate, and chose to dropUltimate for 90 days to see if hisMelee results would improve. Hungrybox especially hoped to winSupernova 2024, which took place at the end of the detox. Ultimately, the effects of the detox remained inconclusive, though Hungrybox failed to win a single notable event during this time, including Supernova 2024.

Playstyle[edit]

Hungrybox is well known for his defensive playstyle, relying heavily on Jigglypuff's ability to weave through opponents in the air and set up blockades with several consecutive and well-placedback aerials. He compounds this playstyle with his very consistent punishes once given an opening, utilizinggrab combos and deadlyRest setups to take stocks abruptly, and excellentDI andSDI to stretch out each of Jigglypuff's stocks by escaping KO setups that lesser Jigglypuff mains may fall into. All of these factors allow him to grind down most matches to his preferred slow pace, often forcing the match to be very focused onspacing, and grants him dominating control over the flow of a match.

Hungrybox was often seen as a very one-dimensional, "campy" player up toEVO 2015; he would easily and consistently defeat opponents outside of the top 5, but faltered against players of his level who could adapt to situations more effectively than he could. Hungrybox has since improved his adaptation skills and incorporated semi-aggressive grounded approaches into his playstyle, often leading to grabs or aerials that send his opponents off-stage. This change of play gives him far more variety and further promotes his control over the flow of the match, as opponents must be ready to change focus on a moment's notice, all the while being very aware of the looming possibility of a Rest. His improvements as a player have seen him much greater success in recent years, to the point that he was considered the best player in the world from 2017 to 2019. He credits much of his success to working withCrunch, his coach and longtime friend, who helped him optimize his decision making and come up with gameplans for all of his main rivals.[1]

Hungrybox is well known for his ability to "clutch", or win by what seems an impossibility, in a last-game, last-stock, usually last-hit fashion, most notably atEVO 2016 againstArmada in grand finals, when he came back from the brink of last-stock elimination to reset the bracket and win the tournament. This has earned him the nickname of "Clutchbox" (alongside other variations, such as "Hgod" and "Clutchgod").
