Elegant is a Smasher from Irvine, California who is currently residing in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is regarded as one of the most well-knownLuigi players in competitive play, having used the character to great success in bothSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Elegant is best known for his tournament performances inSmash 4, where he was widely regarded the best and most successfulLuigi player of all-time, as well as one of the best players inSoCal. In addition to being the only Luigi player ranked on multiplePGR rankings, peaking at 11th on thePGR v4 and ranking 27th on theall-time ranking, Elegant's performance atGameTyrant Expo 2017 marked the closest a Luigi player came to winning aSmash 4 major, as he was only one game from winning Grand Finals reset. Elegant's performances improved Luigi's reputation in competitive play, leading the character to rise greatly between the third and fourth tier lists. In addition to singles, Elegant is also proficient in doubles: he was initiallyAarvark's teammate, with the team being considered one of the best doubles teams in the world, however towards the end ofSmash 4 he began to frequently team with other players to great success, winningGet On My Level 2018 withSuperGirlKels,2GG: Hyrule Saga withStroder,Low Tier City 6 withSamsora, andThe Big House 8 withScend.

Elegant is also known for hisLuigi inUltimate, where despite initial underperformances, he established himself as the best Luigi player from 2019 to 2022, becoming Luigi's primary top-level representative during this time. At his peak, he was ranked 14th on theOrionRank Ultimate: Eclipse and had several top 8 major finishes, including placing 3rd atMainstage 2021, the best Luigi major performance at that time. Although he left competitive play in 2022 due to controversies and his results have been surpassed by several Luigi players since, he remains one of the greatest American Luigi players of all time.

Playstyle[edit]

Elegant's playstyle remains mostly the same fromSSB4 toSSBU, and is highly characterized through his potent punish game, his quick movement, and unpredictable choices in neutral. He has a mastery ofLuigi's combos and recovery, making use of his powerful grab and combo game, and offsetting the character's exploitable recovery by recovering in different and unusual ways. Due to the amount of combo starters Luigi has, Elegant uses these to frame trap andDI mixup his opponents, doing massive amounts of damage and potentially pulling azero-to-death combo.

Elegant was also well known for his ability tobutton mash efficiently. This skill was especially evident in his ability tospike opponents withLuigi Cyclone inSSB4, which is only possible if the player mashes enough to make Luigi rise and prevent the attack's finalhitbox from connecting. As Elegant was proficient as this technique, hisedge guarding ability was on point, allowing him togimp players at low percentages and make comebacks off of a single neutral win. Additionally, he would make great use of Luigi Cyclone to mix up his recovery, as his proficiency in mashing allowed him to gain significant height from the move. Although these effects were removed inUltimate, effectively worsening the move by taking out its ability to gimp and removing its recovery potential, Elegant makes use of Luigi Cyclone's newly added trait of havinginvincibility frames within the startup of the move to combo break his opponents, kill off the top of the stage, brute force his way through an opponent, or cover the ledge. Elegant also makes use of Luigi's newly addedtether to createspace between him and his opponent, start combos, and edgeguard.

Elegant is also known for his upper body shake he does before sets, which he has dubbed the, "Elegant Shake" which he claims gets rid of nerves he may have before a set.

Drunken behavior controversy[edit]

On September 5th, 2022, Shannon, a former friend of Elegant, posted a TwitLonger discussing Elegant's poor behavior when drunk. In the TwitLonger, she noted how there were two incidents where Elegant's drunken behavior had affected her. The first incident was atCollision 2022, where both of them were drunk and had sex, a moment which despite haunting her, she decided to try and let go, as she believed she had handled the incident irresponsibly. The second incident took place afterSuper Smash Con 2022, where she was slightly intoxicated but Elegant was inebriated. Despite Shannon telling Elegant that due to what had happened at Collision 2022 his drunken behavior made her feel uncomfortable, Elegant still preceded to hang around her, hug her, and even asked her to stay at his place, as if he was oblivious to her complaints, leading Shannon to lose all trust in him.[1] During the TwitLonger and in subsequent Tweets, she highlighted that her purpose of posting the TwitLonger was not to "cancel" Elegant, but to give him a wake-up call to a problem that he has.[2]

Elegant initially wrote two TwitLongers detailing his side of his story. He conceded that the two were drunk and had sex during Collision 2022 but was adamant that both parties had consented, a point that Shannon was assuming as well.[3] He also thought that he and Shannon were fine after the situation as they seemingly didn't show ill-will towards each other. On the second incident, although he admitted he didn't remember what took place, he conceded that he had a drinking problem but believed he had gotten better about it.[4] Elegant eventually deleted both TwitLonger in order to write a more detailed one, which in addition to what was explained before, he also added how the two did talk about the first incident following the end of Collision 2022, which led Elegant to believe the two had talked everything through, and that despite being surprised at Shannon unfriending him, he gave her space by not interacting with her prior to the second incident. He concluded the new TwitLonger by agreeing that he should be held accountable for his actions and that he would no longer drink afterSmash tournaments.[5]

Further accusations have since been levied against Elegant from several others, including Elegant's ex-girlfriend.[6][7][8] Despite taking place in different tournaments, all the TwitLongers highlighted Elegant's behavior after becoming drunk and dismissed his claim that he had been working on his behavior.

In response to his actions, Elegant would be banned indefinitely from all events in multiple regions including, but not limited to SoCal,[9] Texas,[10] and Las Vegas, Nevada.[11] This ban has since been upheld by theCommunity Safety Resource Project, who list Elegant at an A-tier ban degree.
