Chillin (also known aschillindude, formerly known aschillindude829) is a retired Americansmasher fromVirginia residing inCalifornia, who mainly playedMelee, mainingFox. He also plays a large variety of theMelee andBrawl cast. He is well known for being the first notable Fox player in competitive play, popularizing the use of several Fox techniques that are commonly used by professionals to this day. He was a prominent member ofH2YL when the crew was active, and has written a notable amount about his past history and the origins ofMelee in his blog, "History of a Smasher", onSmashBoards. Chillin was formerly ranked 57th on the2017 SSBMRank and was formerly ranked 3rd on theMD/VA Melee Power Rankings. He was also formerly ranked 6th on the MD/VAProject M Power Rankings and 8th on the discontinuedSmash Panel Power Rankings. He is also a well-knowncommentator, often commentating at majors alongside his former fiancée Chelly before they split up mid-2020.

Tournament history[edit]

2002-2014: Early years inMelee[edit]

Chillin has been a contender inMelee tournaments since 2002, and was the first ever player to take a set off ofKen in a singles tournament (atGame Over in early 2004). He was known for creating several Fox combos during his early career, such as using three falling up airs in a row, andwaveshining across the stage along with ashine spike. During the 2003-2007 era ofMelee, Chillin was a common participant in nationals, such as MLG events, being able to frequently place within the top 8 of them. In doubles, he often teamed withAzen, being the first team to defeat the team of Ken andIsai in grand finals of a tournament (atMLG Chicago 2006).

During the 2008-2010 era, afterMelee presence began dying out due toBrawl tournaments beginning to appear, Chillin continued to playMelee, but not at the same level that he used to.

In 2011, Chillin accompanied his long time friend and doubles partner Azen in Azen's first tournament appearance in almost four years, atPound V in February 2011, where they placed 9th in doubles. He and Azen then started a new YouTube series, "Fight Nights with Azen and Chillin," in which they would talk about fighting games and aim to share strategies and help others improve.

Chillin remains a top Fox player, and is still able to place highly at various nationals. On April 11th, 2014, Chillin was picked up byTeam Curse prior to their merge withTeam Liquid, being the first player to be selected for theirMelee team. AtEVO 2014, he managed to defeatColbol 2-1 andWestballz 2-0 in the losers' quarters pool before losing toFly Amanita 0-2, placing 9th overall inMelee singles.

2015 and recent years[edit]

Following a post on Twitter byLeffen about Team Liquid's choice of players to sponsor (KoreanDJ andKen),Chillin challenged Leffen to a first-to-five Fox ditto atApex 2015's Salty Suite for $100, as well as the "rights" to use Fox's defaultcolor palette inMelee tournaments. He ultimately lost to Leffen, failing to win a game in the resulting set. He finished 33rd at the tournament. Chillin still later placed well in other major tournaments in 2015, including 17th atCEO 2015 andSuper Smash Con 2015, 33rd atHTC Throwdown and 17th atThe Big House 5.

In 2016, after a mediocre 49th placing atGENESIS 3 to start off the year, he placed 25th atPound 2016 andCEO 2016, then later got 17th atEVO 2016 and 25th atSuper Smash Con 2016. Following another 33rd placing atShine 2016, Chillin demonstrated why he continued to be a top Fox player by placing 13th atThe Big House 6 and 9th atEclipse 2.

In 2017, he managed to get a higher placing atGENESIS 4 than the previous year's iteration, placing 33rd. AtDreamHack Austin 2017, he got 17th, then once again placed highly atSmash 'N' Splash 3, with 13th. On September 1st 2017, he announced on Twitter that he would take a break from competing seriously for a couple of months, focusing instead on his stream and commentary. He still enters tournaments usually using secondaries, and still competes in doubles[1].

OtherSmash games[edit]

Chillin briefly playedBrawl shortly after its release, and placed 3rd atCritical Hit 3, though has since quit, viewingBrawl as a non-competitively viable fighting game due to its removal of techniques and overly defensive gameplay, which, in his opinion, took away from the depth of the game.

Chillin is also a professionalWolf player in theBrawl modProject M. He commonly competes inProject M locals in the MD/VA area, though he has not made many impacts in singles events at national tournaments. He usually teams withChuDat at nationals; the two have achieved decent results in doubles events.

He also occasionally enteredSSB4 in regional tournaments, mainly usingMega Man.

Health issues and GoFundMe fundraiser[edit]

In June 2022, Chillin suffered from a stroke that was caused by a knee infection that spread to his heart, with the blockages that resulted after causing the stroke.[2] A GoFundMe fundraiser was created on June 10th, 2022 by his brother Burhan Khan to alleviate the medical costs, which included paying for heart surgery.[3] An online fundraiser event calledRollback Rumble: In Chillin We Trust was held on June 17th-18th, 2022. There wasMelee singles, aMeleeFox vs.Falco crews exhibition, and aProject+Wolf exhibition, with rules made to require Chillin's alternate costumes for Fox, Falco, andSamus. On June 19th, 2022, Burhan Khan confirmed Chillin successfully underwent heart surgery in a GoFundMe update. Chillin has since resumed streaming while recovering.

Trivia[edit]

  • Chillin's loss atApex 2015's Salty Suite exhibition againstLeffen in Foxdittos inspired several memes within theSmash community:
    • Prior to the Salty Suite, Chillin infamously recorded arap song that denigrated Leffen, using theMelee trackCorneria to back his lyrics. It led to a number of parodies, as well as other smashers performing their own rap tracks directed at other smashers.
    • A number of his facial expressions in the set sparked several memetic posts, including jokes about his death.
    • After his defeat in the Salty Suite, Chillin said "My B" into a microphone at the tournament, causing other smashers to humorously utter it in tournaments and in chats.
    • Aside from the diss track "Respect Your Elders" about Leffen, Chillin has also recorded several other diss tracks aboutHugs,Mew2King, and evenNintendo.
  • After his loss to Leffen, Chillin began to use Fox'sblue costume in tournaments. However, in October 2016, Leffenallowed him to use the default costume again.
    • After he suffered from a stroke in June 2022, Leffen used Fox'sblue costume atBattle of BC 4 while spreading awareness of the GoFundMe campaign created to alleviate his medical costs.
    • However, Leffen'sstart.gg profile picture is still a screenshot of Chillin's shocked expression after the infamous Salty Suite exhibition.
  • Outside of Smash, ChillinspeedrunsSuper Mario Sunshine,Super Mario Odyssey, andSuper Mario 64.
  • After Chillin took a game off of Plup atGet On My Level 2019 while Plup was Sheik, Plup switched to Fox to close out the set and went only Fox for the rest of the tournament. This prompted various memes afterward that "Chillin retired Plup's Sheik" that the Smash community has joked about.
