Super Smash Bros. Brawl instruction booklet description
The Smash Ball is a mysterious sphere that floats around the stage. It will break once it takes enough damage. The player who delivers the last hit will be able to use a powerful move called a Final Smash, but only once.

TheSmash Ball (スマッシュボール,Smash Ball) is an item inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl,Super Smash Bros. 4, andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. It allows the user to activate a powerfulFinal Smash attack when it breaks. It appears inTraining Mode, certainEvents, standard andSpecial Smash. It does not appear inThe Subspace Emissary and other certain single player modes. InUltimate, a fake version of the Smash Ball called theFake Smash Ball exists.

Overview[edit]

Mii Brawler's Final Smash in standby mode after breaking the Smash Ball.

When a Smash Ball appears, the screen blinks and thecrowd gasps, at which point the Smash Ball will begin to roam around the stage freely, avoiding players in the lead and hovering around players trailing behind. To use the Smash Ball, one must first break it by attacking it; any assistants such asPoké Ball Pokémon andAssist Trophies can help break the Smash Ball for the character who summoned them. When a player successfully breaks one, the screen darkens, and the player whoseattack broke the Smash Ball goes into 'standby mode', in which the character's eyes turn yellow and their body begins to glow a rainbow color. InSSB4 andUltimate, an additional aesthetic occurs where the entire screen fades into a deep grey color and causes everything to look dark except the player with the Final Smash, who glows with the Smash Ball's colors. The Final Smash can then be unleashed at any time by pressing the input for aneutral special move. Players can attack a fighter in standby mode to make them "drop" the Smash Ball, at which point it will begin roaming the stage again. After using a Final Smash, the character is no longer in standby mode and must break another Smash Ball to use a Final Smash again.

A "fresh" Smash Ball has 30HP inBrawl, 60 HP inSSB4, and 40 HP inUltimate. It will automatically lose 2 HP every 60frames (1 second)—if the Smash Ball is already at 2.5 HP or less, it will stop reducing its own HP. InSSB4 andUltimate they have a comeback mechanic in which players with few KOs deal more damage to it compared to dominating players (see "Damage Multipliers" table). An attack'sstaleness/freshness is factored into the damage a Smash Ball takes, but the1v1 multiplier isn't a factor. InTraining Mode forSSB4 andUltimate, it will spawn with 10 HP, making it much faster to break to test with, especially after a few seconds when it reduces its own health.

If no one breaks the Smash Ball after a long enough period of time (20 seconds inBrawl and 22 seconds inSSB4 andUltimate), it flies away and is lost until another spawns in. It can also be lost if broken by something not attributed to a fighter, including stage hazards (for example,Norfair's lava) and certain items (such as the later parts of aSmart Bomb explosion). They are also affected byglancing blows; the Smash Ball will not take damage but will be pushed away. While a character is in standby mode, no Smash Balls will appear until the Final Smash is used (or the Smash Ball is dropped).

The apparent physics of the Smash Ball tends to vary. While it will often bounce off of walls andhard platforms, it will occasionally pass through them. The amount ofknockback it takes also varies; sometimes, it will take an attack without even changing its trajectory, and other times an attack will send it halfway across a stage or even outside of the visible boundaries. Like with characters, the camera will be pulled out so the Smash Ball stays visible, so a Smash Ball sent off the screen can pull the camera away from the characters. Smash Balls do not vanish by being forced off the stage; however, it may take a while before it roams back to the stage, and it may wander across the boundary for an extended period of time without returning to the stage and then vanish.

InUltimate, there is a 20% chance that a Smash Ball will spawn with "heavy" physics making it similar to aSoccer Ball: it will lie flat on the ground unless on a slope, where it will roll down. In this state, if it is not broken in time the Smash Ball will vanish like a normal item instead of floating away. If it falls off the stage into the bottomblast zone, it will respawn on the stage.

In matches with aFinal Smash Meter, Smash Balls can still appear if they are switched on. Breaking one under these circumstances will instantly fill a fighter's meter. However, the Smash Ball can still be knocked out of the player by opponents and, if this happens, the meter will empty completely rather than returning to its previous charge.

Spawning[edit]

Compared to other items, Smash Balls have extra mechanics that affect their spawning. InBrawl, there is a 900-frame (15-second) lockout timer when a match starts that prevents a Smash Ball from spawning. Once the lockout timer ends, Smash Balls can be spawned like other items with a common spawn chance of150/947. After a Smash Ball spawns and is removed from play (such as despawning or being used), the lockout timer will be reset to 1200 frames (20 seconds).

Smash 4 andUltimate make a few adjustments to the spawning mechanics that make early spawns less likely, but overall spawns more consistent. The first change is that Smash Balls can no longer appear from container items and will only spawn from "item spawn points" when the item spawn timer expires. The second change is to the lockout timer: the initial lockout timer is still 15 seconds, but the later lockout timers were increased to 80 seconds (4800 frames) instead of 20. The third change is more complex:

  • A base spawn chance of 10%
  • A frequency compensation based on the frequency set in theItem Switch
    • Low = 3.375
    • Med = 1.625
    • High = 1.0
  • An early-game scaling factor that makes early spawns less likely
    • For simplicity, under normal circumstances, this can be treated as a value between 0 and 1 that is defined by the number of frames since the starting lockout ended divided by 6,660

When the lockout timer is not active, the above values get multiplied together whenever the item spawn timer expires and determines the chance for a Smash Ball to spawn. When the "early-game scaling factor" reaches 1 (after 111 seconds since the initial lockout ended) Smash Balls will have a spawn chance of 10% on High frequency, 16.25% on Med, and 33.75% on Low. This all bypasses the standard item spawn function, meaning the relative spawn weights of other items, Smash Ball's own spawn weight, and which items are enabled have no impact on the likelihood of Smash Balls appearing. This ultimately makes Smash Balls a consistent feature in matches, whereas inBrawl it could range between uncommon to very common depending on what items are enabled.

InSmash 4, the Smash Ball has a spawn weight of 150 on all stages except forHalberd, where it is 5, though it is irrelevant due to aforementioned spawning mechanics. It is unable to spawn if any of the followingPoké Ball Pokémon are active and will prevent them from spawning if it is active:Palkia,Togepi,Victini, orZoroark. It is unable to spawn if any of the followingAssist Trophies are active and will prevent them from spawning if it is active:Devil,Nightmare,Skull Kid.

InUltimate, it has a spawn weight of 1, though it is irrelevant due to aforementioned spawning mechanics. It is unable to spawn if any of the following Poké Ball Pokémon are active and will prevent them from spawning if it is active: Palkia, Togepi, Victini, or Zoroark. It is unable to spawn if any of the following Assist Trophies are active and will prevent them from spawning if it is active:Andross, Devil,Flies & Hand,Moon, Nightmare,Nikki,Nintendog, Skull Kid,Squid Sisters,Vince, orYuri Kozukata.

Appearance[edit]

Smash Ball artwork fromBrawl, though it looks different during actual gameplay.

The Smash Ball takes the form of a floatingSuper Smash Bros. logo that cycles through different colors of the rainbow and is surrounded by an aura of colorful light. InSuper Smash Bros. 4, the Smash Ball also leaves a trail of color behind it, and the aura of light is much more intense.

Trophies[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

This item is also available as a trophy, with random availability. It is a fairly common trophy to collect.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Smash Ball glow will remain visible even with moves with hurtbox-altering properties.
  • In theIwata Asks interview forSuper Smash Bros. Brawl,Masahiro Sakurai stated that he had intended to add Final Smashes since thefirst game inthe series; in the debug menu of the first game, unused sound bites of characters can be found that were likely meant for these attacks, such as Ness shoutingPK Starstorm.
  • In theSmash Bros. DOJO!!, the Smash Ball does not appear as anitem, instead, it is as a "how-to-play"tutorial segment. However, the Smash Ball is included within theItem Encyclopedia sub-section.
  • If all threeDragoon orDaybreak parts are in play, a Smash Ball will not appear until the Dragoon has been summoned or the Daybreak has been created. If a Smash Ball is in play, a third part will also not appear (one or two parts may appear, but a third part will not). This is to prevent the Dragoon or Daybreak and a Final Smash from appearing on the screen at the same time (doing so could cause a Dragoon andSnake'sGrenade Launcher to have targeting sights on the screen at the same time). The same applies toMr. Resetti.
    • Similarly, inTraining Mode, if a Dragoon or Daybreak part is spawned while a Smash Ball is on the field, the Smash Ball will disappear. If a Smash Ball is spawned, any Dragoon or Daybreak parts on the field that are not currently being held will disappear.
  • InBrawl, some Final Smashes take longer to load from the disc than others. If a character's Final Smash is not yet loaded and the player tries to activate it, they will instead perform their neutral special move as usual.
  • OnYoshi's Island, as it moves about, the Smash Ball can "hit" the yellowblocks and cause them to spin just as ajump from below or anattack would.
  • The Smash Ball, along with thePoké Ball, cannot beswallowed or eaten byMunchlax.
  • In aStamina Match, if a character is defeated in standby mode, the rainbow effect stays on the body and the screen remains dark until the body is knocked off of the stage.
    • This was changed inUltimate so that characters areinstantly KO'd when they run out of HP.
  • InSSB4's andUltimate'sTraining mode, the Smash Ball is much weaker, taking around one hit before breaking. InBrawl, it acts as it would normally in a match.
  • InSSB4, the Smash Ball's lines are pure black both in-game forSSB 3DS andSSB Wii U and onSSB 3DS's trophy, but are rainbow onSSB Wii U's trophy.
  • If aSmash Taunt is happening, and a Pokémon,Assist Trophy, foe, or stage effect destroys the Smash Ball, the Smash Taunt will stop automatically.
  • InSmash 4,Pikmin canlatch onto a Smash Ball.
  • When viewing its trophy in the gallery or camera mode, the cross will never move; only the color and trophy base can be rotated.
