Pookas (プーカァ,Pooka), are enemies from thePac-Man universe, originating from theDig Dug universe.

Origin[edit]

Sprite of a Pooka fromDig Dug.

Originally, Pookas were enemies in the gameDig Dug, but later became recurring characters inPac-Man's games. A Pooka made its debut in aPac-Man title inPac-Man World, and Pookas first served as enemies inPac-Man World 2.

InDig Dug, Pookas idly walk around underground tunnels. They are capable of phasing through the terrain in order to get closer to the protagonist, Taizo Hori; in this intangible state, only the Pookas' goggles are visible. Taizo Hori can defeat Pookas by pumping them with air, causing them to inflate until they eventually burst.

InSuper Smash Bros. 4[edit]

As a Smash Run enemy[edit]

Pookas appear as enemies inSmash Run inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. They attack by ambushing fighters from underground or through walls, though their goggles are visible even when they are inside the terrain. When they attack, they do not deal any damage but are capable of disrupting fighters by knocking them over. When attacked they inflate until they pop, damaging nearby enemies. If they are not attacked while they are in an inflated state, they will gradually deflate until they return to normal.

As a moveset element[edit]

A Pooka also appears in its original sprite form as one of the charactersPac-Man can summon in hisNamco Roulette taunt. This is the Pooka's only appearance inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Trophy[edit]

The Pooka trophy is exclusive toSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

The Pooka's only role inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate is its returning appearance inPac-Man's Namco Roulette.

Trivia[edit]

  • Though almost never seen, Pooka do have a tumbling animation built into them. They would need to be hit by an extremely weak attack such asLuigi's down taunt,Cloud'sFinishing Touch or a cannonball by another small enemy to tumble, and not inflate.
  • Despite Pookas becoming part of thePac-Man series, they are placed in theOther section of the trophy gallery. This is very likely due to theirDig Dug origins.
