Palkia (パルキア,Palkia) is a creature from thePokémon series.
Origin
Palkia is a Water/Dragon-typeLegendary Pokémon and theversion mascot ofPokémon Pearl and its remakePokémon Shining Pearl. Palkia is categorized within the Pokédex at #484 as the "Spatial Pokémon". It has the ability to control and distort space, and it is treated as a deity inSinnoh's lore. InPokémon Pearl,Team Galactic attempts to use its power to recreate the universe withCyrus as a ruler. After defeating Cyrus atSpear Pillar, the player has a chance to battle and catch Palkia.Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Palkia can transform into its Origin Form using theLustrous Globe.
Spacial Rend is a special Dragon-type move with 100 base power, 95% accuracy and an increased chance of dealing a critical hit. Spacial Rend is Palkia'ssignature move, and thus Palkia is the only Pokémon able to learn it naturally.
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl
As a stage element
Palkia is one of three Legendary Pokémon that can appear and cause battle effects on theSpear Pillar stage, alongsideDialga andCresselia. When the stage has a pink tint, Palkia is the Pokémon for the match. Palkia can cause several different effects on the battle:
- Causing an earthquake, breaking either the left, right or middle third of the upper ground.
- Firing a vertical pink Hyper Beam covering a third of the stage, either the left, right or middle.
- Firing a horizontal pink Hyper Beam through the cave area.
- Halving gravity and weight for all fighters.
- Mirroring the screen, such that pressing right causes a character to appear to move to the left.
- Rotating the screen at a 180-degree angle, causing it to appear upside-down.

- Palkia
- A Spatial Pokémon. In the Sinnoh region, this Pokémon has been revered for many generations, much like Dialga. Dialga warps time, but Palkia has control over space. It lives between parallel dimensions and is known for its power, rumored to be able to warp space. It can use Spacial Rend to rip through the very space an enemy resides in, damaging the foe at the same time.

InSuper Smash Bros. 4
As aPoké Ball Pokémon
Palkia can appear from Poké Balls andMaster Balls. When summoned, Palkia uses its signature moveSpacial Rend, temporarily turning the camera upside down. It disappears after a short time, returning the camera to normal. Opponents who touch Palkia take 10% damage and low knockback.
Trophy
Palkia's trophy can be obtained in both versions. InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U it is part of theLegend of Pokémon Diamond & Pokémon PearlTrophy Box.

Stories surround this Legendary Water/Dragon-type Pokémon, saying that it has control over all of space. Its Spacial Rend attack will tear space and flip the screen upside down. When this happens, the directional controls of all the fighters will become flipped as well.

Stories of this Legendary Pokémon say that Palkia is a god that controls all of space. When it uses its Spacial Rend attack in Super Smash Bros., it causes the screen to flip upside down. If that wasn't confusing enough, the controls in all four directions end up reversed, too!

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate
As a stage element
Palkia reprises its role as a stage hazard on the returningSpear Pillar stage. Spear Pillar now allows for any of the three Legendary Pokémon to appear each time, rather than being set for the whole match.
As a Poké Ball Pokémon
Palkia returns as a Poké Ball and Master Ball Pokémon, with the same behavior asSmash 4.
Palkia cannot be summoned on 3D Land, Arena Ferox, Balloon Fight, Brinstar, Dream Land GB, Golden Plains, Green Hill Zone, Jungle Japes, Mushroomy Kingdom, Mute City SNES, Paper Mario, PictoChat 2, Prism Tower, Reset Bomb Forest, Spear Pillar (as it already appears there), Suzaku Castle, Tomodachi Life, Tortimer Island, WarioWare Inc., or Yoshi's Island.
Palkia's Spacial Rend will not be able to flip the screen upside down if a fighter is equipped with a spirit with Screen-Flip Immunity, though it will still remain on stage to damage any opponents who touch it.

Trivia
- Palkia is one of four Pokémon to be both a Poké Ball summon and a stage element in the same installment, as it returns as both inUltimate.Chansey was the first with this distinction, appearing inSuper Smash Bros., whileElectrode andScizor also return as both inUltimate.
- Palkia is also the only Legendary Pokémon with this distinction.
- Because of this, Palkia cannot be summoned at Spear Pillar inUltimate.
- In at leastSmash 4, when a player getsScreen KO'd while Spacial Rend is active, the player willfall upwards from the stage's perspective (downwards from the camera's perspective).
- Palkia's roars inBrawl are a combination of sound effects of the Varactyl from theStar Wars film franchise and Godzilla roars from theGodzilla film franchise. A similar case occurs withLunala inUltimate, who uses the cry of Mothra from theGodzilla franchise.
- Its roars as a Poké Ball Pokémon replace the Godzilla roars with roars of King Ghidorah, who is also from the same franchise.
- Palkia's roar is not heard in the game's Sound Test outside ofBrawl.
- During Spacial Rend inSmash 4, themagnifying glass will not properly show the character's vertical position. Characters falling toward the lower blast line (at the top of the screen) show a magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen and vice versa. This does not occur for the horizontal position, which is properly reflected, unless the upper or lower camera bounds are crossed, in which case the horizontal position fails to be reflected. This results in confusing scenarios where if a character is launched off the upper-right of the stage and then falls to the right of the stage (bottom-left of the screen falling up to the left of the screen), the magnifying glass will appear on the upper-right of the screen and then move to the upper-left of the screen, being incorrect in both places.
