Omnislash /Omnislash Ver. 5 (超究武神覇斬 /超究武神覇斬ver.5,Translimit Martial God Supreme Slash /Translimit Martial God Supreme Slash Version 5), justOmnislash inSuper Smash Bros. 4 andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate prior toversion 10.1.0, isCloud'sFinal Smash.

Overview[edit]

Omnislash's text box.

Cloud knocks his opponent into the air and repeatedly slashes them before dealing a final blow. This is similar to Robin'sPair Up. Upon activating it, a text box with the word "Omnislash" appears at the top of the screen, while Cloud prepares his Buster Sword in a flash of light and wind. He announces "ツキがなかったな." (You weren't lucky.) before charging forward (in a similar fashion toCritical Hit,Marth andLucina's Final Smashes), stopping at the first opponent he makes contact with. Cloud cannot cancel the move once started, unlike Critical Hit, so missing with this attack on the ground on a walk-off stage/in the air while close to a blast zone without any intervening terrain may result in aself-destruct.

Upon making contact with an opponent, Cloud performs an upward slash, and all opponents hit by this slash take 3%Super Smash Bros. 4/4% (1% trapping hit, 3% tackle)Super Smash Bros. Ultimatedamage and are knocked high into the air with Cloud's Buster Sword. Caught fighters are repeatedly slashed 14 times in midair, taking 2%Super Smash Bros. 4/2.2%Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, before Cloud charges up a final blow, bringing his sword down on the caught characters for 5%, dealing 4% on the way down, then slamming him and his opponents to the ground in a mighty explosion for 10%, dealing a total of 50%Super Smash Bros. 4/53.8%Super Smash Bros. Ultimate damage. The final explosion can also launch bystanders. The move can potentially KO as early as 15%.

If all opponents are hit by this move, the camera will dramatically pan around Cloud and his opponents, before zooming in on him as he charges the final blow, before returning to normal after the final hit.

Omnislash does not affect and is not affected by theLimit Gauge in any way.

Omnislash Ver. 5[edit]

Cloud using the separated Fusion Sword as part of his Final Smash, Omnislash Ver. 5.

InUltimate as of version 10.1.0, if Cloud is in any of hisAdvent Children costumes, he will useOmnislash Ver. 5 instead. On theMove List, Omnislash has been renamed to "Omnislash / Omnislash Ver. 5" to reflect this change. Cloud knocks his opponent into the air and the Fusion Sword splits into six blades; five circling around Cloud and one above his opponent. Cloud then grabs each circling sword, striking his opponent in quick succession before slamming the opponent into the ground with the blade above. As the move finishes, Cloud is surrounded by the swords for a moment before they recombine into the Fusion Sword.

Omnislash Ver. 5 deals the same total damage and knockback, but there are fewer multi-hits (11 instead of 14), with each doing 0.6% more damage to compensate, and the hitbox placements of these hits are different. The final hit also always launches bystanders in the same direction as the opponent caught by the move, unlike the default version. These two changes effectively make the move functionally identical against the trapped opponents, but potentially slightly different against bystanders.

Instructional quote[edit]

Trophy[edit]

Omnislash
Cloud sets out to prevent Sephiroth from sending Meteor crashing into the planet. The fate of the world on his shoulders, Cloud confronts his enemy one on one. He unleashes a flurry of swift slashes before delivering the finishing blow. In Smash Bros., the final strike creates an explosion, launching nearby fighters.

Origin[edit]

Omnislash as it originally appears inFinal Fantasy VII.

Omnislash is the finalLimit Break Cloud learns inFinal Fantasy VII. The attack can be learned by using the item of the same name won in the Gold Saucer's Battle Square requiring 51,200 BP or 32,000 BP after acquiring the Highwind, provided Cloud has learned all of his other Limit Breaks.

When used, Omnislash deals 15 hits against randomly-selected enemies, inflicting massive total damage. At its max potential, Omnislash can perform all 15 hits with the maximum amount of damage being 9999, which is equal to Yuffie’sDoom of the Living but weaker than both Cid’sHighwind andBarret‘sAngermax at max potential due to the latter both hitting 18 times. Reaching the damage limit will require leveling up Cloud, or greatly improving his Strength stat with Power Sources or using Hero Drinks in battle, even with his Ultimate Weapon equipped.

It is famously used as the finishing blow on the game's final boss,Sephiroth, regardless of whether or not it was learned by Cloud beforehand. If Cloud doesn’t use Omnislash then he will automatically counter-attack after Sephiroth deals 31/32 damage against him[1].

Cloud begins Omnislash Version 5 inFinal Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete.

Omnislash Ver. 5 is the finishing move Cloud used against Sephiroth inFinal Fantasy VII: Advent Children. After his original Omnislash fails, Cloud utilises all of his Fusion Sword's individual blades to perform Omnislash Ver. 5. The attack is named as such as it was the fifth version of the attack designed for the film. The iteration inSmash Bros., especially the one showcased during Sephiroth's reveal trailer, is a faithful recreation that includes the Fusion Sword's initial split, Cloud switching between every blade to perform a slash, and the Fusion Sword's blades falling in a circle around Cloud, with the reveal trailer including Cloud catching the main blade at the end.

In mostFinal Fantasy games, magic spells and special attacks are prefaced by the appearance of a text box showing the move's name at the top of the screen, hence the "Omnislash" text box at the beginning of the Final Smash.

Also in most of its appearances, Omnislash often involves a frenzy of flight-based slashes on the foe (barring inKingdom Hearts andKingdom Hearts (Re): Chain of Memories where it only involves three or a few more slashes in slow succession), though its appearance and the number of slashes performed varies based on the title. Most of the time, a downward slamming strike is a recurring finisher in those cases.

InSmash Bros., the move's animation stays true to its appearances; after an initial slash to hit the opponent(s) into the air, the attack consists of 15 sword slashes (the same amount used inFinal Fantasy VII), with the final hit being the downward slamming strike fromFinal Fantasy VII and laterKingdom Hearts games, while the midair flight during the slash has been a staple coming from the firstKingdom Hearts incarnation.

Trivia[edit]

  • Prior to Cloud,Ryu andKen also had two Final Smashes within the same game,Shin Shoryuken / Shinku Hadoken andShippu Jinraikyaku / Shinryuken respectively. However, which one they performed depended on their distance between the opponent rather than the costume.
  • The attack canOHKO if used on the Town variation ofTown and City when the middle platform is at its peak height.
    • It can also OHKO on75m, but only inSmash 4, as the spot for the attack was relocated to under the giant girder inUltimate.
  • If Cloud attacksRosalina with this move, andLuma returns to her during the attack, the attack sound effects will not play as long as Cloud is hitting Luma.
  • Despite not affecting Cloud's Limit Gauge, he will be enveloped by the same blue aura as when Limit is full, not to be confused with the general colorful Final Smash Aura most fighters get.
  • InUltimate, there was a glitch onPrincess Peach's Castle andGreat Cave Offensive where if an opponent is hit by Omnislash on one of the slopes near the edges of the stage, it will fail to send them into the rest of the move and send Cloud inside the center of the stage, killing him after it ends. This has since been fixed.
  • Cloud is the first fighter in the series to have a move change between alternate costumes, and the first fighter to have a new move granted in an update.
  • InUltimate, if a replay of Cloud in hisAdvent Children costume using Omnislash in Version 10.0.0 or earlier is saved, then the game is updated to Version 10.1.0, and the replay is watched afterward, Cloud will do a glitched version of Omnislash that also uses animation cues from Omnislash Ver. 5, which also causes Cloud to not be directly attacking the opponent. The replay will eventually stop before the Final Smash finishes.[2]
