Nightmare (ナイトメア,Nightmare) is the main antagonist and final boss ofKirby's Adventure and its remake,Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.
Origin[edit]
Nightmare is the final boss ofKirby's Adventure and its remakeKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. He attempted to infect theFountain of Dreams in order to spread nightmares to Dream Land's populace. Due to the threat this posed,King Dedede sealed Nightmare away by dismantling theStar Rod, the source of the fountain's power, cutting all of Dream Land off from any dreams in the process.Kirby, believing that Dedede had intentionally sabotaged the fountain out of selfishness, reassembled the Star Rod in full by defeating Dedede's minions, ultimately besting the king himself at the fountain. Once the Star Rod was put back in place, Nightmare was released. Dedede theninhaled Kirby and fired him, along with the Star Rod, off to fight Nightmare in the sky and later Popstar's moon.
Nightmare's design is based onKirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which in turn had borrowed Nightmare's visual redesign from theKirby: Right Back at Ya! anime, where he once again appears as the main antagonist, this time as the head ofNightmare Enterprises (Holy Nightmare Co. in the original Japanese version).
Nightmare's ability to black out the screen originally had no basis in theKirby series and was aSmash-exclusive invention for the character. However, his return as a boss inKirby Air Riders gave him a very similar ability to black out the arena with only the player, a semi-transparent overlay of Nightmare himself, and Nightmare's projectile attacks (indicating his location) being visible.
InSuper Smash Bros. 4[edit]
As anAssist Trophy[edit]
Nightmare appears as anAssist Trophy. When summoned, he will first appear in his orb form before transforming into his true form, then blacks out the entirety of the screen, forcing players to fight in the dark.
While player tags disappear during the blackout, shields and other special effects do not, and players can use various moves to track themselves in the dark.

- Nightmare
This ball of nightmares came from the Fountain of Dreams, taking nightmares to all of Dream Land. King Dedede sealed it away by shattering the Star Rod, but it was revived when the Star Rod was restored by Kirby. In Smash Bros., it hides the stage and the fighters in pure darkness.

Trivia[edit]

This is unlikeMeta Knight andKnuckle Joe, who share their Japanese voices with the anime. Notably, after the release ofSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Ginga later returned to voicean alternate version of Nightmare inSuper Kirby Clash.
- Nightmare is the only Assist Trophy from theKirby universe who wasn't introduced inKirby Super Star, instead debuting inKirby's Adventure.
