Marx (マルク,Marx) is a character from theKirby series, and is the primary antagonist of theMilky Way Wishes game inKirby Super Star. He appears as aboss inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Origin[edit]
Marx made his debut as a major character in theKirby Super Star gameMilky Way Wishes. In the game, Marx asksKirby to gather the power of surrounding stars to awaken the giant comet,Galactic Nova in order to make the sun and moon stop fighting. Once Kirby finds and awakens Nova, Marx appears, knocks Kirby out of the way, and asks Nova for the ability to rulePop Star. Nova grants Marx's wish, causing him to become larger and grow crystal wings. After Kirby defeats him, Marx is sent flying into Nova, with the impact causing them to explode.
Marx appears as the final boss of Milky Way Wishes, and, effectively, ofKirby Super Star as a whole. He also appears as the final boss ofThe Arena sub-game. InThe True Arena sub-game fromKirby Super Star Ultra, Marx's unconscious body absorbs the remaining energy from Nova, transforming him intoMarx Soul.
In addition to these appearances, Marx appears as the final boss in theKirby Mass Attack sub-gameKirby Brawlball, and as both a playable character and a secret boss inKirby Star Allies, being fought during the credits sequence of theHeroes in Another Dimension sub-game.
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. 4[edit]
While Marx himself does not make an appearance, a remix of the theme that plays when fighting him inKirby Super Star, Vs. Marx, appears inBrawl andSmash 4 as a music track.
InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
Marx's boss theme fromBrawl returns as a music track.
As a boss[edit]
InUltimate, Marx appears as aboss at the end ofKirby's,Rosalina & Luma's, andInkling'sClassic Mode run, as well as inAdventure Mode: World of Light.Sephiroth also faces Marx during his Classic Mode, as with other regular bosses in the game, though in the third round. Normally,Vs. Marx plays during the battle, butCalamari Inkantation plays in Inkling's route, andGaleem / Dharkon plays during the boss rush in thefinal stage. His voice appears similar to the one heard inKirby Star Allies. His battle takes place in theMysterious Dimension, which is inThe Dark Realm.
Marx's boss fight starts off with him using the moves that he similarly used against Kirby inKirby Super Star (except the arrow attack). When the fighter gets close, he will teleport some distance away from them. Marx has three moves that he didn't have inKirby Super Star orKirby Super Star Ultra: an attack where his eyes turn black and black balls spawn from them, an attack where he creates vein-like growths, and an attack where his eyes enlarge and fire lasers.
Upon defeat, Marx screams and starts flying around the stage sporadically. His wings break off as he reverts to his smaller form and lands face first on the ground. His body also temporarily alights in a purple flame that rises out of him just before the screen fades out.

Move | Damage | Description |
---|---|---|
4-Way Cutter Attack (4方向カッター攻撃) | Sends out fourCutter boomerangs from his body that all circle back to him. At low health, he'll perform this move twice in a row, a reference to when Marx Soul does the attack. The blades can be reflected or eaten. This attack is referred to asShooter Cutter (シューターカッター) in theKirby series. | |
Extra-Thick Laser (極太レーザー) | Marx teleports to the player's vertical position. He charges up and fires a laser that crosses the entire stage. This attack dealsdarkness damage. Can not beshielded, but can bearmored by attacks such as Kirby'sStone. This move is referred to asMarx Cannon (マルク砲) in theKirby series. | |
Ice Bomb (氷爆弾) | Floats to the top of the screen and drops a large ice ball. The ice ball explodes into two icy shockwaves when it reaches the player's current vertical position, spreading out horizontally andfreezing the player on contact. It can be reflected or eaten. The icy shockwaves can also be absorbed. This move is referred to asIce Bowl (アイスボウル) in theKirby series. | |
Makai Plant (魔界植物) | Flies offscreen and drops five to seven seeds that disappear into the ground. Afterwards, large, thorny vines will grow upward from where the seeds landed. At low health more seeds will fall; they will also fall and grow faster. Unlike inKirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra, shielding the seeds does not destroy them. This move is referred to asSeed Attack (シード攻撃) in theKirby series. | |
Jump Out of the Ground (地面飛び出し) | A shadow appears on the ground and follows the player. After a bit of time, the shadow doubles in size and Marx flies out of it. Marx often uses this attack after using another attack that puts him offscreen, doing so more frequently at low health. This move is referred to asShadow Upper (シャドウアッパー) in theKirby series. | |
Black Hole (ブラックホール) | Splits in two, opening a Black Hole that will attempt to absorb the player. If the player gets caught, they will take massive damage and get spiked into the ground. Marx prefaces this attack with three teleports from side to side, until stopping at the exact center of the screen. Marx can be damaged prior to splitting but is intangible afterwards. | |
Tracking Eye (追尾する目) | Marx's eyes go completely black, then black balls come out of them and start bouncing around the stage, dealingdarkness damage to the player if they hit. At low health, Marx will spawn more black balls, up to 6. | |
Capillary Expansion (毛細血管展開) | Moves to the middle of the screen and retracts his wings, where pink, branching appendages resembling blood vessels grow out instead, spreading across the screen and dealingfire damage to the player. The attack is vertically mirrored. There are two variations: one in which the appendages fill the center bottom of the screen while leaving the corners untouched and vice-versa. | |
Compound Eye Laser (複眼レーザー) | Grows large compound eyes that send out multiple laser beams from the eyes. The lasers are evenly spaced from each other but have a random rotation. This attack dealselectric damage. At low health, more lasers will be sent from each eye. |

Trivia[edit]
- Marx is the only boss to be fought inAdventure Mode that does not have an area themed after his game of origin. Hisarea appears to be a destroyed variant of various locales in the World of Light, as opposed to the unknown planet on which he is fought inKirby Super Star. His boss arena appears visually similar to its original appearance, however.
- Just like in his original boss fight, players can avoid his giant laser beam by ducking under it.
- Marx is one of three universe-representing regular bosses who had not appeared in previousSmash games; the other two areDracula andRathalos.
- Marx is the smallest boss fought in the game, as his wings lack hurtboxes and he appears even smaller than numerous fighters.
- Marx's arrow attack is his only attack from his original boss fight inKirby Super Star to not appear as an attack in hisSmash boss fight.
- Marx is the only boss in the World of Light whose primary spirit is not classified as a Neutral type; instead, Marx is a Grab-type Primary spirit.
- According toMasahiro Sakurai in "Mr. Sakurai Presents:Sephiroth", Marx was initially a lot creepier and was not suitable for all audiences, so he had to be softened.[1] It's unclear if he was referring to how Marx looked during the development ofUltimate or to his original appearance inKirby Super Star.
