Magicant (マジカント,Magicant) is a stage inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. InSmash 3DS, it is whereNess is fought when being unlocked, with the stage being unlocked along with him.

Stage overview[edit]

The fight takes place in the sky in the clouds above the land ofMagicant. The stage consists of four pink clouds which act assemisoft platforms: a main, large one in the middle, two smaller elevated ones near the sides, and a small one near the bottom.

Dungeon Man sometimes appears under the stage, slowly walking from one site to the other, with only his head being visible and acting as a moving platform. While he is under the middle platform, the small platform near the bottom disappears.

Several elements also occasionally appear on the middle and left platforms:

  • a tree, which acts as a staticsoft platform.
  • a Mobile Sprout which walks back and forth, acting as a soft platform.
  • the Sky Runner, which quickly drops down, remains suspended above the stage for a while and quickly rises back up into the sky. It is completely solid. It can be forced to rise up early if it is kicked upwards by a Flying Man.
  • a tomato or an octopus statue which act as solid obstacles. They appear suddenly on a platform and slowly sink into it until they fall down. Characters hit by them while they fall take 20% damage. Attacking the tomato enough makes it break into pieces, while attacking and/or standing on the octopus statue makes it sink faster. If they fall on Dungeon Man's head, the tomato breaks, while the octopus statue will just abruptly disappear.

Flying Men sometimes appear on the right platform, in front of the shell-shaped house. If a character walks by him, the Flying Man will fight alongside them, akin to an Assist Trophy. The Flying Man can be defeated by other characters by knocking him off the stage or inflicting enough damage (if the latter happens, the Flying Man lies on the ground, flashes and disappears): following this, a small tombstone spawns in the background, in front of the house; after some time, another Flying Man will spawn in the same location, repeating the process. After all five Flying Men have been defeated, they will not spawn for the rest of the match.

Occasionally in the background of this stage, a "rip" in the sky opens and shows various points inNinten's andNess's adventures in their respective games:

  • Ninten outside his house with his dog,Mick.
  • Ninten on the roof ofTwinkle Elementary School meetingLloyd.
  • Ness and Paula traveling inThreed with citizens and enemy zombies in the area.
  • Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo at theLumine Hall sanctuary with the scrolling text on the wall reading, "I'm Ness...". The text, however, has a different font than inEarthBound. InUltimate, it will also be translated when playing in another language setting.
  • Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo walking near thePhase Distorter 2 inSaturn Valley before their departure to fightGiygas.

InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, the rip does not occur when playing Local Wireless or Online.

Hazards off[edit]

Withhazards off, the Flying Men, trees, Mobile Sprouts, Sky Runners, tomatoes, octopus statues and Dungeon Man do not appear. However, the mechanic of meteor smashed opponents being launched straight through the clouds instead of bouncing off them remains.

Ω forms and Battlefield form[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, the platform is an extended version of the regular form's middle platform, and it is ahard platform as opposed to being asemisoft platform as in the regular form. Flying Men and Mobile Sprouts are absent, but the rip still occurs.

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, the main platform of theBattlefield form and Ω form is similar toSSB4's Ω form; however, it is slightly redesigned and is resized and reshaped to matchFinal Destination andBattlefield, respectively. The threesoft platforms of the Battlefield form are also made of pink clouds and are unique to this form.

Origin[edit]

Magicant as it appears inEarthBound Beginnings.

This stage is primarily based onMagicant fromMother (later released outside Japan asEarthBound Beginnings), but also contains various elements fromMother 2 (localized asEarthBound) as well.

InEarthBound Beginnings, Magicant is a mysterious land made of pink clouds and light green rivers, and it is whereQueen Mary resides. The main goal of the game is gathering theEight Melodies aroundAmerica and singing the full song to Queen Mary, upon which it is revealed that Queen Mary is the embodiment of the consciousness ofMaria. She then recalls that she raisedGiegue, the main antagonist, and the melody was the lullaby she would sing to him. Magicant, which is revealed to have existed only in her mind, then disappears along with her. In this stage, the design of Magicant is retained; however, Queen Mary's castle is notably absent.

InEarthBound, Magicant is a surreal land inNess's mind and is accessed by collecting the Eight Melodies. The appearance of Ness's Magicant differs vastly from Queen Mary's, in that it appears as a colorful imaginary world that changes color as he talks to people there. The idea of the rip in the sky could be a reference to how Magicant contains memories of Ness's adventure, such as allowing him to meet various characters from his adventure who remind him of the things he did. Ness then has to travel through theSea of Eden in order to defeatall evil in his mind. In this stage, the only element fromEarthBound's Magicant is the giant tomato that occasionally appears.

Flying Men as they appear inEarthBound.

FiveFlying Men inhabit Magicant in both games: they are humanoid bird-like creatures whichNinten and Ness can recruit to help them fight against enemies while in Magicant. They are said to represent Ness's and Ninten's courage. When a Flying Man is killed in battle, a tombstone with a cross will appear next to their home, and another will appear for every Flying Man killed until all five are dead. In this stage, the design of the Flying Men and their house is based on theEarthBound version.

InMother 2, Ness's progress through areas was sometimes impeded by statues shaped like octopuses, and the only way to get rid of them was by using theOctopus Eraser Machine item invented byApple Kid. The North American localization ofEarthBound replaced the octopus statues with large pencil statues, though this change does not carry over to non-Japanese versions ofSmash.

Mobile Sprouts are enemies inEarthBound, appearing early in the game. They are walking bipedal sprouts which can summon more of themselves during battle.

TheSky Runner is a vehicle built byDr. Andonuts,Jeff's father. Initially used to rescue Ness andPaula fromThreed's graveyard, the group later reuses the ship in order to travel to Winters to meet up with Dr. Andonuts, and again to travel toSummers.

Dungeon Man is the dungeon form ofBrick Road, created with help from Dr. Andonuts. InEarthBound, he acts as both a visitable dungeon and as a traveling companion in theScaraba desert.

Note that inEarthBound, the octopus statues, Mobile Sprouts, the Sky Runner, and Dungeon Man have no relationship at all to Magicant, however, they could appear on the stage just to reference Ness's memories of the moments in the game.

Trophy[edit]

Magicant

Tournament legality[edit]

Magicant is usuallybanned in tournaments. The primary reason is due to the Flying Men being able to KO at low percentages, giving an advantage to the owner of it. The stage layout also provides manycamping locations, particularly under the main body of the stage.

Trivia[edit]

  • Magicant is the firstEarthBound universe stage to be based on a location fromEarthBound Beginnings.
  • Non-Asian versions ofUltimate label the stage as originating fromEarthBound. However, theEarthBound logo used for Magicant lacks the outer glow of the one used for Onett and Fourside; this refers to theEarthBound series as a whole rather than the gameEarthBound.
  • The appearance of theUrban Zombie in one of the rips in the sky uses a color palette that is inaccurate to their original appearance inEarthBound.[citation needed]
    • Also, Ninten's sprite in the stage uses the English version ofEarthBound Beginnings where it has a beige stripe on the bottom of his shirt as opposed to the Japanese original known asMother where he had a black stripe on the middle of his shirt.
  • A portion of the back of the Sky Runner is missing.
  • IfCloud usesOmnislash, the void of this stage can easily be seen on the upper portion of the screen.
  • InUltimate, during the screen zoom ofSudden Death andSuper Sudden Death, Flying Men will spawn in and immediately die, before even being tagged in.
  • Infor 3DS, Magicant is rather notorious for its numerous glitches:
    • IfKirby usesFinal Cutter on the very edge of the Sky Runner, he will beginrapidly moving back and forward. This was fixed in update 1.0.5.
    • If the playergrabs a Flying Man inTraining Mode, and pauses during athrow, the Flying Man will be stuck inside the character. This can lead to further glitches, such as opponents also being trapped inside the character. This was also fixed in update 1.0.5.
    • Characters don't have shadows when they are on the small platform below the main stage.
  • Infor 3DS, in both Ness's unlock battle and inAll-Star Mode, the Flying Men do not spawn.
  • During development, both a 3D model and a 2D sprite were developed for the Flying Men, with the model being rejected in favor of the sprite.Masahiro Sakurai stated during his weekly magazine column that the sprite was chosen to lessen strain on the 3DS hardware, and because the development team felt it looked better. He also mentioned that the model was later recycled during development ofDLC and became acostume for theMii Brawler.[1][2]
    • Despite the Switch having more powerful hardware, the Flying Men still use their 2D sprite inUltimate.
  • InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, zooming in to the interior of Dungeon Man's model reveals the remnants of Brick Road, the man who built and became Dungeon Man.
  • InWorld of Light, Ness is found on a pink cloud with a similar appearance to Magicant.
  • InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, if an opponent is hit with ameteor smash while they are above the stage, they will be launched below the stage, albeit with heavily reduced potency.
  • InUltimate, the followingAssist Trophies can only appear on the Battlefield and Omega forms of this stage:Skull Kid,Nightmare,Jeff,Ashley,Riki,Dr. Wright,Nintendog, andShadow the Hedgehog. TheSquid Sisters cannot be summoned on this stage at all. Additionally, the followingPoké Ball Pokémon can only be summoned on the stage's Battlefield and Omega forms:Togepi,Lugia,Gardevoir,Arceus, andXerneas.Marshadow cannot be summoned here at all.
  • Steve picks up wool blocks instead of dirt blocks on this stage.
