Article on Super Mario WikiLuma (species)

Lumas (チコ,Chiko) arestar-like creatures from theMario series. They appear in a variety of colors, and possess a number of distinct abilities related to outer space, most notably the ability to transform into celestial bodies. The Lumas are commonly seen alongsideRosalina, who acts as their surrogate mother, as well asLubba, who acts as their leader.

Six varieties of Lumas (includingPolari), alongside Rosalina, made theirSuper Smash Bros. debuts as a tag team of playable characters inSuper Smash Bros. 4. They return in that capacity inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Origin[edit]

Two different colored Lumas in their debut ofSuper Mario Galaxy.

Lumas have appeared in central roles in bothSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2. They are friendly creatures who have the ability to transform into several outer space-related objects, such asLaunch Stars, planets, and even Galaxies. They can also grant abilities to others, such as the ability to shootStar Bits orSpin. Not much is known about the Lumas' origin, although what is known is that upon death, they are reborn into new stars. They come in a variety of colors, including yellow, red, blue, green, apricot, dark brown, pink, purple, turquoise, and orange. Giant varieties have also been seen.

Lumas have generally appeared in background roles, but one was made playable for the first time inMario Tennis Open forNintendo 3DS.

The Lumas fight alongside Rosalina asnewcomers inSuper Smash Bros. 4. They function similarly toPikmin in that they have a set amount ofhit points, but can also fight on their own, similarly to theIce Climbers. In addition to the yellow Lumas that always appear with Rosalina at the start of a battle, green, blue, red and apricot (the color ofbaby Luma) Lumas can appear, as doesPolari. However, Polari and these other varieties only potentially join the battle when the initial Luma is KO'd.

Trophies[edit]

Lumas do not have any trophies of them alone, although they share several trophies withRosalina.

NTSCThe mysterious Rosalina lives in the Comet Observatory with the Lumas. In Smash Bros., Rosalina and Luma can fight in different places at the same time. If you can trap someone between Rosalina and Luma, you'll be able to unleash incredible damage with their joined attacks!
PALRosalina and the Lumas have been close ever since she travelled the galaxy with one of the little star-like creatures. Now, the commander of the Comet Observatory appears in this game, with her trusty companion fighting alongside her. Their greatest strength is being able to attack together at the same time.

NTSCRosalina can pull in items and projectiles around her with her Gravitational Pull move. Her up special Launch Star is a diagonal jump and, though harmless, it has exceptional range. You also have some control over Rosalina's trajectory when she uses it.
PALWith a flick of Rosalina's wand, the move Gravitational Pull draws in items – even ones that are stuck somewhere. Her Launch Star up special is a diagonal jump that can be aimed slightly. It doesn't deal any damage, but it helps you jump higher and stay in the air longer, making it ideal for getting back to the stage easily.

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

As a playable character[edit]

Lumas reappear alongside Rosalina inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. They have been nerfed during the transition, as they have lesshit points and get knocked back more easily from attacks, leaving them much more susceptible to KOs. However, Lumas have also gained a 1.5× damage multiplier when launched away from Rosalina, and respawn earlier in battles with multiple players.

Spirits[edit]

Luma also appears as an Advanced-classsupport spirit and is featured on theStarship Mario spirit, while the Hungry Luma appears as a Novice-class support spirit.

InAdventure Mode: World of Light, Luma is presumably one of the countless spirits captured byGaleem during his takeover of the universe. Luma's spirit is located in the outer space section ofThe Light Realm.

Luma's Spirit Battle uses an army ofKirby puppet fighters and is fought on theMario Galaxy stage. During the battle, Star items will appear, referencing the Luma's star-shaped bodies.

During the Hungry Luma Spirit Battle, Luma uses a Kirby puppet fighter and is fought on theMario Galaxy stage. It is fought along with the Rosalina & Luma puppet fighter. During the battle, the Super Launch Star item appears, referencing the Hungry Luma's ability to transform into Super Launch Stars, or hidden planets that require a Super Launch Star to access.
