Ultimate is a goal that must be met, usually requiring the player to use a certain character, input certain moves, play against a specific level AI, etc. Below is a list of all 124 challenges. Completion of a goal may net the player gold, Spirit Points, spirits, or a costume/hat accessory. Each challenge comes with a picture as well, normally having something to do with said challenge. The Challenges can be viewed from the menu of the same name in theVault.
AGolden Hammer can be used on challenges to complete them. Golden Hammers are unlocked after a certain amount of challenges have been completed. Certain challenges cannot be completed with a Golden Hammer; these are marked as red cells. All other (white) cells can be broken by a Golden Hammer.
Challenges are sorted by the gameplay category where their conditions must be met. Due to this, it has been split into multiple sections below.

Smash[edit]
The reward of clearing all challenges in the Smash page is 12,000 Gold.

Trivia[edit]
- Unlike in past games, when a Golden Hammer is used to clear a challenge and then finish that challenge later, the hammer icon next to that challenge's description will be removed.
- Like inSmash 4 some challenge pictures feature images that normally are impossible to mimic in the actual game.
- Some of the challenge pictures are references events or situations to various games:
- The picture of Cloud and Zelda inTortimer Island referencesAerith's death fromFinal Fantasy VII, specifically the scene where Cloud lays Aerith's body to rest in the waters of the Forgotten City. Coincidentally, the reason behind her death,Sephiroth, was added intoUltimate two years later.
- The picture showing Ken and Yoshi with his back turned is a reference to the recurringStreet Fighter character Akuma and his signature attack, the Shun Goku Satsu, or the Raging Demon in English. This reference was also made withRyu's All-Star congratulations screen inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U.
- The picture of Ryu and Ken appearing to fist bump is a reference to them performing this action as a unique intro animation starting in theStreet Fighter III series.
- The picture of Snake, Bayonetta and Zero Suit Samus inGerudo Valley is a possible reference to the fight against Sniper Wolf inMetal Gear Solid, specifically to her death following the battle.
- The picture of Mega Man and Dr. Wily in Wily Castle references a running gag at the end of every classic Mega Man game, where Dr. Wily would beg for mercy after being defeated. Mega Man attempting to shoot a Crash Bomber at Wily may specifically reference the ending ofMega Man 7, where Mega Man attempted to kill Wily.
- Toon Link's Spirit Board image references the Swiss folktale of William Tell, an archer who was forced to shoot an apple off his son's head.
- Meta Knight is the only playable base game character to not appear in a challenge image.
- Inkling and Isabelle are in the most challenge titles, with four each.
- Coincidentally, they are both female newcomers.
- 66 of the 76 playable characters in the base game are in a challenge title, with the remaining characters being Marth, Chrom, Meta Knight, Dark Pit, Zero Suit Samus, Ike, Charizard (along with Pokémon Trainer), Diddy Kong, Mii Swordfighter, and Mii Gunner.
- This makes Chrom the only base game newcomer to not be in a challenge title.
- Wendy is the only alternate character in a challenge title.
- If the player obtainsGold as a Challenge reward and reaches 5,000 Gold as a result, they will not complete the Challenge for obtaining 5,000 Gold immediately afterward. Instead, they must obtain any amount of Gold from any other source first[citation needed] or close and re-open the game for that Challenge to be marked complete.
