Article on Super Mario WikiKoopa Paratroopa

AKoopa Paratroopa (パタパタ,Patapata), often just called aParatroopa, is anenemy from theMario series.

Origin[edit]

Mario jumps over a Koopa Paratroopa inSuper Mario Bros.

Koopa Paratroopa made their debut inSuper Mario Bros. as a winged variation of theKoopa Troopa, and has become a common enemy in laterMario games. Like their regular variations, the Koopa Paratroopas are commonly seen in their green and red variations. The green Paratroopas either fly back and forth in a fixed path or hop around, while red Paratroopas fly up and down. If a Koopa Paratroopa is jumped on, they will lose their wings, turning them into regular Koopa Troopas.

InSuper Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

Koopa Paratroopa as it appears in Melee

Koopa Paratroopas appear as a common enemy in theMushroom Kingdom stage ofAdventure Mode.

Koopa Paratroopas are often found flying in midair. Dealing enough damage by attacking them or jumping on them will make them lose their wings, turning them into regular Koopa Troopas. Similar to the Koopa Troopas, the Paratroopas can be defeated bygrabbing andthrowing the Koopa Troopa inside its shell, or by knocking it off a ledge, which will result in a Paratroopa KO bonus where the player receives 300 points for each Paratroopa KO'd.

While the green Koopa Paratroopas are common, only one red Koopa Paratroopa appears in the entire stage right before the battle with theYoshi Team. The red Paratroopa's shell behave similarly to their green variation during the stage, but it also dealsflame damage.

Trophy[edit]

These winged Koopa Troopas can fly, but they're none too smart: they tend to spend a lot of their time simply jumping or fluttering around a small area. As a result, no one exactly thinks of them as majestic, soaring creatures. They lose their wings and become normal Koopa Troopas if Mario or Luigi jumps on their backs.

InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

As an enemy[edit]

A red Paratroopa in theSubspace Emissary.

Koopa Paratroopas appear as enemies inThe Subspace Emissary. The green and red versions appear as flying enemies in stages where Bowser's minions are present. Similar to theirMelee counterparts, if a Koopa Paratroopa is jumped on, they will lose their wings, turning them into regular Koopa Troopas; however, they cannot harm players on contact, but they attack with a lunging bite. Some of the red Koopa Paratroopas even chase their targets and strike when they get close.

When a Koopa Paratroopa loses their wings and fall (provided the attack caused them toflinch), they act similarly to a regular Koopa Troopa. Their health bar, however, will still read "Paratroopa". The wingless red Paratroopas follow their target on foot, though they're slow and easy to escape from. After a while, if not destroyed, they can grow back wings when they go off-screen. If the Paratroopa is KO'd with one hit and doesn't lose its wings, it will reel normally like a defeated enemy instead retreating into its shell.

It is somewhat difficult to catch the Paratroopas as trophies using aTrophy Stand, since a single hit may remove their wings and turn them into a regular Koopa. The player can damage them, move away from them until they aren't visible, and return to their position, making their wings return.

Trophies[edit]

The Koopa Paratroopa trophies can be obtained by using the Trophy Stand on the Green and Red Koopa Paratroopas in The Subspace Emissary. The Green Koopa Paratroopa trophy states that it appears inMario Hoops 3-on-3, however only the Red Koopa Paratroopa appears in that game.

Some Koopa Paratroopas don't even take to the skies, but just jump up and down. These become regular old Koopa Troopas when stomped.

In Super Mario Bros., they possessed the same abilities as green-shelled Koopa Paratroopas, but the routes they flew were different--they flew up and down rather than side to side. There are no red-shelled Koopas who merely hop up and down. You'll often see them participating in two-person kart races and playing basketball.
