Klaptraps (クラップトラップ,Klaptrap) are crocodileenemies from theDonkey Kong universe.

Origin[edit]

Klaptraps areKremlings who debuted inDonkey Kong Country. They damageDonkey Kong andDiddy Kong by biting them. They appear in a variety of colors: blue, red, purple, and green. Klaptraps later appears inDonkey Kong 64 with a similar role. Larger Klaptraps also appear in the game. Klaptraps are among the smallest varieties of the Kremlings and are one of the few that are entirely quadrupedal. The only similar varieties are theKlampons andKrimps, as well as theSnapjaws, which are technically not Kremlings.

InSuper Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

As a stage hazard[edit]

Klaptrap appears on theJungle Japes andKongo Jungle stages, leaping out of the water to bite opponents. Klaptraps appear in two different colors:

  • Orange Klaptraps appear in Kongo Jungle. They jump out from the waterfall near the edges of the stone ledge and near theBarrel Cannons. If a character makes contact with a Klaptrap, they will take damage. Very rarely a Klaptrap will get stuck in the Barrel Cannon, and characters cannot use the Barrel Cannon while one is inside of it; they instead only take damage from contact with that Klaptrap.
  • Blue Klaptraps appear in Jungle Japes. They jump between the opening on either side of the middle section of the stage. If a character makes contact with a Klaptrap, they will take 30% damage and bespiked, sending characters straight into Jungle Japes' torrential waters. They essentially serve asone-hit KOs inMelee. Characters holding on to aledge are also vulnerable to a Klaptrap. They appear every 7-18 seconds (counting the 6 seconds it takes for the to go from one side to the other).

Klaptraps do not come out ofcontainers like other enemies do. They can however be used as regularitems in theTEST stage using anAction Replay or other hacking device. Klaptraps are invulnerable and cannot be damaged, unlike other enemies.

Trophy[edit]

The Klaptrap also makes an appearance as a collectable trophy, where its name is written as "Klap Trap".

This low-slung alligator made its first appearance in Donkey Kong Country. You can subdue it by jumping on its back, but its powerful jaws make it dangerous to approach from the front. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, it swims in the river and sometimes jumps in the Barrel Cannon to stop players from using it.

InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

As a stage hazard[edit]

A Klaptrap as seen on Jungle Japes.

Like inMelee, Klaptrap reprises its role as a stage hazard on the Jungle Japes stage. Instead of randomly appearing, they now consistently appear every 10 seconds. If a character makes contact with a Klaptrap, they will bemeteor smashed. It can no longerone-hit KO like in the previous game (in part due to the newly introducedswimming greatly reducing downward speed), but it still deals a lot of damage and knockback.

Sticker[edit]

Klaptrap appears as a collectable sticker.

InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[edit]

As a stage hazard[edit]

A Klaptrap as seen on Jungle Japes.

Like inMelee andBrawl, Klaptrap reprises its role as a stage hazard on the Jungle Japes stage. Their appearance cycle was reverted to 7-18 seconds like inMelee instead of every 10 seconds inBrawl. Like inBrawl it cannotone-hit KO, but it still does high knockback andswimming does not exist infor Nintendo 3DS, making it likely to result in a KO. Its design was updated to be smoother, making it resemble its official artwork more closely.

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

As a stage hazard[edit]

As in their previous appearances, Klaptraps appear on Jungle Japes and Kongo Jungle (now named Kongo Falls). They act nearly identically to their previous appearances. Blue Klaptraps regain their ability toone-hit KO fromMelee, triggering aSpecial Zoom on contact and dealing significantly more knockback than any of the other games.

As anAssist Trophy[edit]

Moving back and forth on the stage, Klaptrap jumps at the nearest fighter and repeatedly bites down. It may be small, but attacks from its strong jaws are dangerous!

Klaptraps appears inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate as anAssist Trophy. Once summoned, they run around the stage and latch onto any opponent they touch. Once latched, they bite down, doing repetitive damage similar to theFan. As with most Assist Trophies in Ultimate, they can be KO'd.Training Mode describes them as:Leaps up on opponents and bites down with sharp fangs.

Klaptrap has a spawn chance of38/2086. They cannot be summoned on the following stages in a standard versus match (applies only to the base form unless noted otherwise):

Spirit[edit]

Klaptrap appears as an Advanced-classprimary spirit. It is obtained by completingClassic Mode's Bonus Game asKing K. Rool within 45 seconds.

Klaptrap's Spirit Battle uses a blueTiny King K. Rool puppet fighter and is fought onKongo Jungle. Klaptrap appears as a hostile Assist Trophy for the fight.

Trivia[edit]

  • InBrawl, Klaptrap's eye texture is not centered properly, placing it halfway on the edge of its eye.
  • Klaptrap's render fromSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate closely resembles its official art fromDonkey Kong Country, but mirrored.
  • When Klaptrap is attacked inUltimate, it makes the same sound as it did when defeated inDonkey Kong Country. This sound was done by Chris Sutherland, making it the onlyDonkey Kong character inUltimate known to have a specific voice actor. However, Sutherland was not credited for this sound clip, but would later be credited asBanjo andKazooie.
    • It is also the only Assist Trophy with a voice actor to not be present in the Sound Test.
  • As with all other Assist Trophies, only one Klaptrap can be spawned at a time in a match. However, uniquely, up to 3 can be present at once during the Klaptrap Spirit Battle.
  • Its attack as an Assist Trophy is similar to theKirby enemy,Gator, which also attacks by latching onto and repeatedly biting characters.
