Hitmonlee (サワムラー,Sawamular) is a creature in thePokémon media franchise.
Origin[edit]
Hitmonlee is aFighting-typePokémon introduced inGeneration I, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #106 as the "Kicking Pokémon". Starting withGeneration II, Hitmonlee evolves fromTyrogue at level 20 if its attack is greater than its defense. It is a male-only species known for its long, spring-esque legs that allows it to kick rapidly from a distance. In the original games, it was along withHitmonchan, one of the possible prizes for defeating theKarate Master inSaffron City'sFighting Dojo.
Hitmonlee's English name is named after the famous Actor and Martial ArtistBruce Lee, while its Japanese name is derived from kickboxerTadashi Sawamura.
Jump Kick is a Fighting-type move with 100 (70 in Generation I) base power and 95% accuracy. If it misses, the user takesrecoil damage equal to half of its maximum HP (1 HP in Generation I). Hitmonlee can learn it in every game, and beforeGeneration IV it was the only Pokémon to be able to do so.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon[edit]
Hitmonlee can be summoned by aPoké Ball. It attacks with Jump Kick: upon appearing Hitmonlee remains motionless for several frames, then it extends its leg and jumps in the air in a long arc towards a random opponent. If it connects it inflicts 24% damage and heavy knockback.
Hitmonlee has a spawn chance of1/12.
Its voice clips in the Japanese and English versions are from thePokémon episodeThe Punchy Pokémon. They were only from the episode's Japanese version; the scene they were from was dubbed over in the episode's English dub.
InSuper Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
Hitmonlee makes a brief cameo appearance in the opening movie, during the sequence that shows dozens of Pokémon. However, it does not return as a Poké Ball summon; it has seemingly replaced byScizor, since they have similar attack fashions and effects.

Hitmonlee's trophy is exclusive toSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Interestingly, its description actually acknowledges it being a Poké Ball summon in the originalSuper Smash Bros.

Hitmonlee still does not return as a Poké Ball Pokémon, but does appear as an Advanced-classprimary spirit.
Hitmonlee's Spirit Battle uses two yellow-and-orangeCaptain Falcon puppet fighters and is fought onSuzaku Castle. Both Captain Falcons have increased kicking and knee striking power, referencing Hitmonlee primarily attacking with its legs.
