Article on WikirbyGreen Greens
A stage based on Green Greens from Kirby's Dream Land. Whispy Woods (the tree in the center) blows wind to the sides. You can eat the apples it drops to recover health! Or you can just pick them up and throw them at your opponents.
Super Smash Blog,Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Official Site

Green Greens (グリーングリーンズ,Green Greens) is a starting stage inSuper Smash Bros. Melee andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, and an unlockable stage inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. It is one ofKirby's home stages, and he and his teammates inAll-Star mode are fought on this stage.

Stage overview[edit]

The stage is made up of three floating islands. The island in the middle is the largest, and above it are two floating platforms. The two islands to the left and right are somewhat smaller, and are usually where most of the fighting occurs. The tree in the center,Whispy Woods, will occasionally blow gales of wind in a certain direction to disrupt the fight.

Between the islands are blocks that stack up. The blocks will stop appearing once a stack is five blocks high, and will not start again until the fifth block is destroyed. Combatants can break the blocks by attacking them. Blocks always have collision turned on, meaning any kind of stage interaction can be performed with the blocks regardless of their location. Any block can randomly be spawned as a Bomb Block, which causes an explosion when attacked, dealing heavy knockback and 22% damage inMelee, 20% inBrawl, and 13% inUltimate. The explosion is alsounblockable, and can detonate while falling into place, meaning any player can suddenly get launched by a Bomb Block randomly spawning directly above or even inside their character.

Also, Whispy Woods will occasionally shake its branches, droppingapples on the middle island. After landing, the apples become items. Some apples are projectiles that can be picked up and thrown at enemies, while others are healingfood. All apples have activehitboxes while falling, meaning they can damage players under them, and can combo into each other fairly easily due to their position on the stage. There is also a small chance an apple will explode upon contact with a player, with no visual indicator distinguishing regular apples from explosive.

Ω form and Battlefield form[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, the main platform of theΩ form andBattlefield form has the main platform of the normal version resized and reshaped to matchFinal Destination andBattlefield, respectively. Whispy Woods still appears in the background, but does not blow players away nor drop apples onto the stage. Blocks also do not drop. The threesoft platforms are based on the two checkerboard purple and yellow soft platforms in the normal form.

Hazards Off[edit]

With stage hazards off, the blocks do not appear at all and Whispy Woods does not blow or shake its branches.

Origin[edit]

Whispy Woods, as he appears inKirby Super Star.

This stage is loosely based onGreen Greens, which first appeared as the first level inKirby's Dream Land; however, it aesthetically bears a closer resemblance tothe first stage ofKirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Whispy Woods, a sentient apple tree, first appeared inKirby's Dream Land as the first boss and has appeared in numerousKirby games since. In most games, he attacks by dropping apples overKirby and shooting gusts of air at him; however, inKirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Whispy Woods attempts to shake apples off himself onto Kirby. In this stage, Whispy Woods will occasionally shake out apples onto the stage that damage fighters when hit. He will also sometimes blow out air; however, this only pushes fighters without damaging them.

InKirby Super Star'sThe Great Cave Offensive, there is a room with falling stars that turn intoStar Blocks that stack up. The falling stars also damage Kirby if they fall on him.Bomb Blocks, first appearing inKirby's Adventure, are exploding blocks that cause chain reactions in some levels that allow Kirby to proceed. In this stage, there are falling Star and Bomb Blocks; however, unlike inThe Great Cave Offensive, the falling Star Blocks do not damage fighters.

Tournament legality[edit]

The normal form of Green Greens is banned in tournaments in all of its appearances, though older rulesets forMelee did allow the stage to be used; the reason for its banning is due to its overabundance of opportunities for camping. The bomb blocks can also easily disrupt matches, and inBrawl, their knockback is enough to allow for KOs. The sideblast lines are also abnormally close to the platforms, allowing for early KOs, and the tower of blocks allows for wallinfinites, such as shine infinites byFox and chain throws byKing Dedede.

Update history[edit]

Glitches[edit]

A few glitches can occur on this stage:

  • Though it is not known how it is accomplished, one glitch causes the Bomb Blocks to explode forever, so after the initial explosion and the destruction of the Bomb Block, anything that touches the area the block was in is hit by an explosion, making it impossible for new blocks to fall and create a sturdy platform. Thisvideo shows the glitch.
  • Another causesJigglypuff to "fall" eternally after any standard jump or double jump. There needs to be at least two blocks on top of each other. Jigglypuff can then jump into the blocks. It can be either in front of or behind Jigglypuff. As long as the direction is being held towards the blocks, Jigglypuff will retain the falling motion but not move downwards. Using any attack cancels this as it destroys the blocks. It can be redone once two blocks are again available.
  • Finally, ifOlimar usesPikmin Throw to toss a red, white or blue Pikmin on the side of the blocks, they will spin continuously until the blocks get destroyed, or they latch onto an opponent. However, if one does this with three sets ofPikmin on the same group of blocks, the game could freeze; if not, a maximum of 864% of damage can be dealt. This glitch does not work with Yellow Pikmin due to their flight arc, nor will it work with Purple Pikmin as they destroy the blocks, freeing the stuck Pikmin.

  • If a Bomb Block explodes and the player pauses the game, the game will lag if the camera is zoomed to the explosion.
  • Green Greens,Rainbow Cruise,Pokémon Stadium andBig Blue are the onlyMelee stages present inBrawl but not either version ofSmash 4.
  • InUltimate, the followingAssist Trophies cannot appear on this stage:Kapp'n,Color TV-Game 15,Dr. Kawashima and theGhosts. Additionally,Solgaleo and theTimer cannot appear either. All of them can only appear on the stage's Battlefield and Omega forms.
