Goombas (クリボー,Kuribo) are a species of meager mushroom-likeenemies from theMario series.
Origin[edit]
Goombas made their debut inSuper Mario Bros. as a common enemy, and have reprised that role in laterMario games. Along with theKoopa Troopas, the Goombas are some of the most recognizable enemies of theMario series. They are anthropomorphic brown mushroom-like enemies that feature a scowling face with fangs protruding from both sides of their lower jaw. They are said to have once been loyal to the Mushroom Kingdom, but switched sides upon the invasion of the Koopa Troop, though some Goombas remain peaceful.
Goombas are the most basic enemy in the series. They simply walk around, turn around at walls, and fall from ledges. They are known for damaging the player on contact, but they can be easily defeated by jumping on them. InSuper Mario 64 and all later 3DMario platformers, Goombas actively pursue any nearby player, but they remain very weak.
Multiple variants of the Goomba exist, with the most well-known being theParagoomba, introduced inSuper Mario Bros. 3, which has wings and will lose them when stomped, theGaloomba, introduced inSuper Mario World, which takes more hits to stomp and can be thrown, theGiant Goomba, introduced inSuper Mario Bros. 3, which is very large and - in certain games - will be split in 2 after being stomped on, and the grey-skinned castle and navy-skinned underground Goombas exclusively featured inSuper Mario Bros. andThe Lost Levels. Goombas may also stand atop one another asGoomba Towers or hop around inGoomba's Shoes under the guise ofShoe Goombas
Prominent members of the Goomba race includeGoombella, a female Goomba and one ofMario's party members inPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door,Captain Goomba, the villain protagonist of theBowser's Minions side story inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, andGoomboss, the king of the Goombas (similar toBowser's status for Koopa Troopas orPetey Piranha's forPiranha Plants) who debuted as a boss inPaper Mario and reprised his role inMario Kart DS andSuper Mario 64 DS.
Goombas often appear in non-playable roles inMario spin-off games, most notably as obstacles onMario Kart tracks, however - in spite of their iconic status - their playable appearances have been few and far between, but whenever they can be controlled by the player, their lack of hands never impedes them, although their stats tend to be rather poor. Goombas would see an uptick in playable appearances during theNintendo Switch era, particularly as a transformation forMario and his friends inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder andSuper Mario Odyssey, and as a new recurring character in theMario Party series, culminating in Goomba making its long-requestedMario Kart debut as a playable "NPC Driver" inMario Kart World.
InSuper Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
As abackground character[edit]
Goombas appear in their 8-bit forms as background characters in theMushroom Kingdom stage.
As an enemy[edit]
Goombas appear as a common enemy in theMushroom Kingdom stage.
Goombas walk back and forth in the arena, fall off ledges, and damage the player's fighter on contact. If the player's fighter makes contact with a Goomba, they will takedamage with moderately lowknockback. Goombas can be defeated by dealing enough damage or by landing on them, the latter instantly setting the character's vertical speed to a fixed value to create the illusion of a bounce, either of which will result in a Goomba KO bonus where the player receives 100 points for each Goomba KO'd.
Goombas also have a2/896 chance to appear out ofCrates,Barrels, andParty Balls in regular battles. They are one of four common enemies that can appear out of acontainer item, the other three beingReDeads,Octoroks, andTopis.
As astage[edit]
Goomba serves as a stage forTrophy Tussle 1, for which the player receives the Goomba trophy upon completing theevent match. The edges of the head can be grabbed if a character tries to recover.
Trophy[edit]
- Goomba
- Goombas are actually traitors who've defected from the Mushroom Kingdom's forces. They're a slow and predictable nuisance, as they always try to wander into Mario's path. Fortunately for Mario, they don't have much stamina, as a single jump on the head is generally enough to defeat them.

InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
As an enemy[edit]
Goombas appear as enemies inBrawl's Adventure Mode,The Subspace Emissary. Similar to theirMelee counterparts, the Goombas simply walk around and can be easily KO'd with one hit, even on Intense difficulty; however, the Goombas can charge at the player's fighter upon noticing them and they attack by ramming into them. Characters now also perform aFootstool Jump when landing on a Goomba, though the decreasing height from repeated footstools makes it hard to jump on several in a row.
Goombas are among the least threatening enemies in The Subspace Emissary. They have among the lowest HP and are easily defeated by one attack and jumping on them will instantly defeat them regardless of their HP. Their movement speed is slow (though they are slightly faster when they charge), they do not have the ability to jump, and they appear oblivious to the player until approached. Their sole attack is slow in start-up lag and easy to guard against. Along with being slow, the Goomba's charge attack is weak, dealing low damage and knockback, having low KO potential overall even on Intense. When a Goomba begins its charge attack however, it will continue for quite a while, and if it goes past the player it will turn around and then charge again.
Although Goombas are never specifically stated to be members of theSubspace Army, they serve as subordinates ofBowser, who is known to be a high-ranking member.

- Goomba
- A citizen of the Mushroom Kingdom who sided with Bowser when he invaded. Goombas slowly chase after Mario on stubby legs. They're not the toughest creatures and can generally be defeated by jumping on them, which makes them disappear. They have fierce fangs, but they don't seem to serve any purpose. Though a nuisance to Mario, they're decent at baseball and mah-jongg.

- Goomba
The Goombas' grumpy little faces aren't scaring anyone. In fact, if Mario found himself in front of a sea of Goombas, he'd just get right to stomping! They were once loyal to the Mushroom Kingdom, but they turned traitor when Bowser invaded. One jump's usually enough to take them out. Foes don't come much weaker than this!
Once loyal to the Mushroom Kingdom, the Goombas switched sides when Bowser invaded. Not that it mattered—they weren't really mighty warriors. In Smash Bros., they are equally weak, simply running at you. They must expect to get stomped by now... Don't expect a lot of fanfare for beating one.:Super Mario Bros. (10/1985)

During the River Survival Spirit Battle, the Goomba uses aKirby puppet fighter and is fought on theKongo Falls stage'sΩ form, referencing the jungle rapids which serves as the main setting of theSuper Mario Party River Survival game mode. It is fought along with theBowser,Yoshi, andRosalina & Luma puppet fighters. During the battle, the player's fighter must survive until the timer runs out, referencing the time limit of the River Survival game mode while Bob-ombs will rain from the sky, referencing the obstacles in said game mode, which will cause the players to lose if they don't avoid them. Also, theParty Ball and theFood items appear, referencing the balloons in River Survival, which will reward the players with extra time after completing the minigames.

Trivia[edit]
- Goombas in theSuper Smash Bros. series walk in a sidestep fashion, similar to their NES appearances rather than the standard 3/4 gait they have in theNew Super Mario Bros. games. They switch to the standard gait when charging at characters.
