Giant Donkey Kong, also referred to asGiant DK, is a recurringminor boss in theSuper Smash Bros. series.
InSuper Smash Bros.[edit]
Giant DK first appeared as a non-playable character in Stage 6 ofSuper Smash Bros.'1P Game. Giant DK has a large amount ofknockback resistance, while his own attacks have increased knockback capable of KOing opponents more easily on top of having increased range due to his size, making him a formidable opponent; however, the player is given two regular-sizedAI partners to help out. On higherdifficulties, Giant DK behaves more similarly to a level 9 CPU while the player's partners are lower in level. It is possible to exploit Giant DK's AI, making him walk back and forth on the top platform, similar toMetal Mario along with his size making him a larger target to attacks. However, it is harder due to AI partners jumping into him or attacking him which will often interfere with his pattern.
Due to being considered as a character separate from regularDonkey Kong, Giant DK does not appear in adifferent color when a player- or AI-controlled regular DK fights him. While Giant DK has all of regular DK's color variations (including the Team Battle-exclusive green palette), they are only accessible through the debug menu.[1]
As a playable character[edit]
- Main article:Giant Donkey Kong (SSB)
It is possible to play as Giant DK using adebug menu code or GameShark. He is distinguished by having drastically increased attack range and being heavier than the regularDonkey Kong, notably with regards to his jab. He is, however, prone to beingchain grabbed, such as byCaptain Falcon orPikachu, and his grab doesn't reach directly in front of him. Despite being his own unique, separate character, he has the exact same head icon as the original.
InSuper Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
InMelee, Giant DK is essentially regularDonkey Kong with a permanentSuper Mushroom upgrade (and can thus be temporarily playable that way or played permanently using Action Replay's Auto-Mushroom cheat). Giant DK appears at the end of the Stage 2 ofAdventure Mode, after defeating two tiny Donkey Kongs. Giant DK is also very exploitable; by standing perfectly still or moving slightly towards the edge, depending on character, it is possible to bait him into using anf-air orn-air and falling into the water, resulting in a free win. This is much more likely on higher difficulties due to the more aggressive AI, and is a common speedrunning tactic for this stage. Additionally, inClassic Mode, like all giant characters, Giant DK has a chance of appearing on Stage 5 as a random giant opponent.
A giant DK appears controlled by the player in the Event MatchLord of the Jungle.
Additionally, the Event MatchGargantuans features an immensely large Donkey Kong (over twice as large as the normal Super Mushroom DK) as an opponent, while the player is a giantBowser, with a super tinyMario andPeach also present.
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
Giant DK returns inBrawl in a similar fashion as inMelee, as a regularDonkey Kong permanently equipped with aSuper Mushroom. Giant DK appears in fourevent matches: inEvent 9: The Monster Beneath the Earth, if the player can'tKO the twoDiddy Kongs in time, they must fight Giant DK; inEvent 22: Monkeys Unite, Giant DK appears as Diddy Kong's ally to defeatSheik andLucario; inEvent 27: Three-Beast Carnage, Giant DK returns withGiant Bowser and GiantCharizard, attackingNew Pork City; finally, inCo-Op Event 14: The Dark Guardians,Ganondorf andWolf must defeat Giant Charizard and Giant DK, again on New Pork City. If counting both events and co-op events inBrawl, the aforementioned events are Giant DK's only appearances inBrawl.
Unlike the other playable characters (along with theThe Legend of Zelda characters andDiddy Kong), Giant DK does not appear as an opponent inClassic Mode, making this the only game in which he does not appear in Classic Mode.
InSuper Smash Bros. 4[edit]
Giant DK is once again one of the possible random giant characters inClassic Mode. Giant DK can appear inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U in a giantSpecial Smash orSpecial Orders.
InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
Giant DK appears as the boss ofJigglypuff'sSuper Smash Bros.-themedClassic Mode route, in reference to his original 1P Game role.

Origin[edit]
The closest analogue to Giant Donkey Kong in theDonkey Kong series is the final boss battle ofDonkey Kong for Game Boy, where the title character usedSuper Mushrooms to become much larger and foughtMario atop the Tower that comprised World 9. In this appearance, however, Giant Donkey Kong was significantly larger relative to Mario than his depiction inSmash.
Alternatively, Giant Donkey Kong's size may simply be a reference to one of Donkey Kong's inspirations,King Kong.
