Gaur Plain (ガウル平原,Gaur Plain) is a stage in both versions ofSuper Smash Bros. 4 and inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, based on an area fromXenoblade Chronicles.Shulk is fought here for his unlock battle inUltimate.
Stage overview[edit]
There are two main rock platforms high up on each side of the stage with walk-off edges, with a giant chasm in between. A collection of smaller and mostly soft platforms appear below the main platforms, with the exact layout changing between the two versions of the game; the Wii U version of the stage also features, near the bottom, some more soft platforms and hard platforms withsprings on them: characters can use the springs to bounce up to the top platforms. The Wii U version also has an extra soft platform on the upper left side, below the main platform.
In the 3DS version, the topblast line is very close to the stage, while in the Wii U version it is much further away. The side blast lines are also much closer to the platforms compared to the Wii U version.
The background shifts through a day/night cycle. InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate only, there's a chance thatMetal Face will appear at night, attacking the players with his claws and laser beams. His laser beam attack can target any of the two upper platforms, making them fall and destroying the platforms underneath. The original layout is automatically restored some time after he is defeated. If attacked enough, Metal Face can be defeated, causing him to explode; the explosion harms all characters in its range except for the one who landed the finishing hit. However, he may return when night falls again.
Ω forms and Battlefield form[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. 4, theΩ form is set on a rocky platform that is completely flat with a pillar at the bottom that extends below theblast line, which is solid in theSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U version but just part of the background inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Metal Face, springs, and walk-offs are removed, but the day/night cycle still occurs.
InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, the main platform of the Ω form andBattlefield form is similar toSSB4's Ω forms; however, it is resized and reshaped to matchFinal Destination andBattlefield, respectively. The threesoft platforms of the Battlefield form are metallic and are unique to this form.
Hazards Off[edit]
With hazards turned off inUltimate, the springs are absent and Metal Face does not appear. This is reminiscent of the stage's design infor 3DS, though the platforms not in that version are still present.
Origin[edit]
InXenoblade Chronicles,Gaur Plain is a location within the greaterBionis' Leg area. It is a lush, large plain featuring bodies of water and several peculiarly shaped rock formations.Shulk and his friendReyn traverse it in their path to the Bionis' Head. InXenoblade Chronicles, the plain is much closer to the Bionis' knee than inSSB4.
Even though the Gaur Plain stage allows the fighters (including Shulk) to fight on top of the mountain arcs, getting onto these arcs was originally not possible inXenoblade Chronicles, since they were simply a background element.
The gigantic figure seen in the distance is theMechonis, the other of the two gigantic beings which make up the world inXenoblade Chronicles. It is visible from Gaur Plain in the original game, but, due to the aforementioned position change, in this stage it appears to be farther away.
Tournament legality[edit]
While the Ω form of this stage is allowed, the standard stage isbanned from tournaments due to it being very open, allowing for camping. Metal Face disrupts and even destroys the stage occasionally in the Wii U version. The stage also has walk-offs.

Trivia[edit]
- Out of all of the shared stages inSuper Smash Bros. 4, Gaur Plain is one of two stages (the other beingWily Castle) that has different gameplay elements between the two versions and is the only stage that has a noticeable difference between the 3DS and Wii U in its stage layout. The 3DS version of Gaur Plain has more condensed blast zones and has several platforms missing from the lower part of the stage, as well as one missing on the left side.
- InUltimate, the followingAssist Trophies cannot appear on this stage: theMoon,Nightmare,Devil,Nikki and theSquid Sisters. Additionally, the followingPoké Ball Pokémon cannot be summoned:Abra,Alolan Exeggutor,Lugia,Metagross,Inkay andMarshadow.
- In the11.0.0 update inUltimate, the defaultMy Music settings for the stage were reorganized; all songs fromXenoblade Chronicles 2 had their default priority lowered to zero, while all otherXenoblade Chronicles songs had their priority raised. The default "alternate" song was also changed fromBattle!! - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 toGaur Plain, making it the only stage to change one of its default songs in an update. This is due to the addedCloud Sea of Alrest stage prioritizingXenoblade Chronicles 2 songs.
