Duon (デュオン,Duon) is the sixthboss encountered inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl'sAdventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. It does not hail from any particular series and is unique toSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. Duon was created from severalShadow Bugs that had gathered into a single powerful entity.
Duon's name is derived from the Latin wordduo, a word meaningtwosome or a group of two, alluding to its dual design.
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]
Role inThe Subspace Emissary[edit]
WhenSnake,Lucario andMeta Knight attempt to dispose of all thefalseMr. Game & Watches in theHalberd's control room, they fall onto the ship's deck and dissolve intoShadow Bugs, which form into Duon, a last resort to defend the Halberd. The monster is confronted by Snake, Lucario,Fox,Zelda/Sheik,Peach, andFalco, while Meta Knight stays behind to retake his ship. The boss battle makes up the entirety of theBattleship Halberd Bridge level. After Duon is defeated, it dissolves into Shadow Bugs and leaves behind the trophy of Mr. Game & Watch, who joins the group after Peach revives him.
Duon later reappears inThe Great Maze and is refought by the playable characters.
Duon is a two-sided robot on a set of wheels that bear a representation of theyin and yang symbol on the faces; one half of the robot is pink and has a cannon atop that head and smaller cannons on its arms, and the other half is blue with a pair of blades for arms and a curved blade on its head. Duon rotates 180 degrees to switch between either side and change its attack strategy. Both sides have shoulder exhaust pipes which can fire missiles (pink side) or mines (blue side). There is an invisible platform between Duon's halves, making it one of only two bosses that afighter can actually stand on, the other beingPorky Minch.
In Duon's defeat animation, it starts leakingShadow Bugs while it spins around and shrinks for a few seconds, after which Duon's halves collapse on the ground.
Moveset[edit]
Move names with a Japanese name listed afterwards are sourced from the officialBrawl Japanese guidebook "大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX ザ・コンプリートガイド".
- Notes: The "d" below is a multiplier based on thedifficulty value. Final damage is rounded down to the nearest whole number. Boss Battles halves the final damage, rounding down again. Move names not from the strategy guide are fan-made in the absence of an official source.
| Name | Damage | Description | Side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swap | 2 + 0.4d | Duon will spin 180 degrees to change between its pink or blue side. Used after Bomb Drop, Homing Missile, or after one side has used two attacks. The wheels have a weak hitbox during this time and has decent knockback, enough to KO at 70%. Dealsslash damage and 10% additionalshield damage. | Both |
| Reposition | 4 + 1.8d | Some attacks move Duon away from the edges of the stage, requiring it to move forwards or backwards to get back into position. During this time its wheels have a hitbox. Strangely the hitboxes are only active when the pink side of Duon is in control. | Both |
| Rush | 12 + 2.0d (wheel) 10 + 1.3d (torso) 16 + 2.8d (arm) 3 + 1.0d (wheel skid) | Duon leans back, spins its wheels, then charges forward with one of its arms pointed forward. As it reaches the edge of the Halberd, it turns, skids, and stops. It might be used several times in a row with little pause in between, especially when Duon has lowhealth. All hits deal primarily verticalknockback and can KO as low as 10% on Intense, though Duon's own collision may save the player. The wheel and torso deal 20% shield damage. The arm deals slash damage and 30% shield damage. The wheel during the skid deals 15% shield damage. | Both |
| Jump | 18 + 2.6d (fall, main body) 12 + 1.0d (fall, sides) 16 + 1.5d (quake) 2 + 0.4d (brake) | Duon jumps up high and crashes down, progresses to the edge of the platform, then spins its wheels in place. The jump goes farther across the field on higher difficulties, which, ironically, makes it easier to avoid. If the player is hit by Duon in the fall, they will sustain enormous vertical knockback. If the player stands on Duon during this move, they will be inflicted vertical knockback with high KO power just before the jump lands. In some situations it is possible to be hit by both the body and side hitboxes at the same time. All of the falling hits deal 30% shield damage. The quake hitbox only affects grounded players and deals 40% shield damage. The wheel while braking deals 15% shield damage. | Both |
| Spin Attack (回転攻撃) | 1 + 0.3d (multihits) 8 + 2.0d (end) | Duon spins around with a very strongvacuum effect (although the range is quite short). It is extremely difficult for the player to escape once they have been trapped by the spin. If all hits chain on Intense, the move will deal up to 84% damage in around three seconds. It also pushes down the character if they are below the ledge, effectively negating many non-tether-based recoveries and gimping many fighters. Also, if the player stands on Duon, they will always be sucked in by the attack, suffering the maximum damage and knockback. The multihits deal 3% shield damage while the final hit deals 20% shield damage. | Both |
| Bowing Swing | 16 + 2.5d (swing) 20 + 2.9d (strike) 6 + 0.8d (quake) | Duon pulls its head back then swings it forward with immense knockback. The attack is strongest as it strikes the stage. It has 54frames of startup but quickly covers a wide arc. The blade deals 40% shield damage while the quake deals 10% and only affects grounded players. | Blue |
| Slash (斬りつけ) | 18 + 2.8d (sweep) 14 + 2.0d (shockwave, early/close) 8 + 1.5d (shockwave, mid) 8 + 1.3d (shockwave, late/far) | Duon crosses its arms then performs a sweeping attack that makes a large shockwave in front of it. The hit itself deals strong knockback. Damage is also very high, however the slash itself has a very low range. The red shockwave inflicts high knockback, but is not as strong. All hits dealflame damage and 30% shield damage, except for the early shockwave which deals 40% shield damage. | Blue |
| Triple Attack (3連攻撃) | 5 + 1.1d (hit 1) 7 + 1.1d (hit 2) 9 + 1.4d (hit 3) | Duon slowly approaches and then slashes three times when within range. It will turn around before slashing if the character jumps over it. The first two hits have windboxes that may send the player upwards regardless of it they're hit. The last inflicts decent vertical knockback. This attack can be fast and very difficult to avoid. All hits deal slash damage. Hit 1 deals 15% shield damage, hit 2 deals 20% shield damage, and hit 3 deals 30% shield damage. | Blue |
| Bomb Drop (爆弾投下) | 10 + 1.09d | Duon launches several mines in the air. These can be detonated (but will not harm Duon) with vertical-based attacks, such asPikachu'sThunder or a chucked item. It is always followed by a "shared attack". The mines are quite difficult to avoid, despite being slow, but they are also one of Duon's weakest attacks, KOing at relatively high percentages (over 100% on the lower difficulties and around 75% on Intense). The higher the difficulty, the more mines are launched. | Blue |
| Homing Missile (誘導ミサイル) | 14 + 2.5d (player) 10 + 0.18d (friendly fire) | Duon moves its non-weapon arm back to shoot four homing missiles. The missiles can be directed to hit Duon itself, inflicting very high damage. Although only one of the hitboxes is programmed to deal friendly fire, either one can damage Duon, sometimes both at the same time. On lower difficulties in Boss Battles, all four missiles redirected to Duon can nearly KO the boss. The missiles can be detonated with vertical-ranged attacks or thrown items. The missiles are very powerful with enough power to KO under 50% on Intense difficulty. The higher the difficulty, the longer the homing time is—below Normal the missiles do not have enough time to curve back towards Duon. It is always followed by a "shared attack". | Pink |
| Triple Beam (三連ビーム) | 14 + 1.5d (orb) 18 + 2.2d (laser) | A dark, blue orb forms on Duon's head and then shoots three strong blue bolts that will pierce though everything (including the field and Duon, but they do not hurt itself) exceptPit'sMirror Shield. The lasers have 30% shield damage, breaking shields at higher difficulties. They cannot be reflected or absorbed. Touching the blue sphere on Duon's head deals very high vertical knockback. The beams themselves are extremely powerful, being able to KO around 30%. The beams' high speed and piercing ability, as well as the unpredictable beginning, make this attack extremely dangerous. | Pink |
| Rapid Fire (連射) | 8 + 1.8d | Duon shoots pink beams in one of two ways: a wide arc or towards the ground. In the former case it will aim from directly in front of itself up to just behind its head. In the latter case it fires directly in front of itself and slowly rises up to the point of being horizontal—can be hard to avoid with how long it covers the ground. The beams can bereflected orabsorbed. The lasers can KO around 60%, deal flame damage, and deal 8% shield damage. | Pink |

Spirit[edit]
Duon appears inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Advanced-classprimary spirit.
InAdventure Mode: World of Light, Duon is presumably one of the countless spirits captured byGaleem during his takeover of the universe. Duon's spirit is located in theBase sub-dungeon ofThe Light Realm.
Duon's Spirit Battle uses agiantIce Climbers puppet fighter starting off with aSuper Scope, referencing Duon's dual sides and the pink side's built-in laser blasters, and is fought on theHalberd stage's ship deck layout. During the battle, Shooting Type items will appear, further referencing the shooting attacks.

Trivia[edit]
- Duon is the onlyboss that can hurt itself without the aid ofitems or areflector.
- It is possible to stand on Duon, between the two heads, although this serves little practical application as Duon still has attacks that can hit the player in this position, while the space for the player to maneuver on is very limited.
- Sonic'sHoming Attack will always home in on Duon's pink side.
- The word "DUON" is hidden on its wheels. This can be more closely seen when examined as a trophy or when using mods that remove the in-game camera limitations.
- If Duon is defeated while performing its Vacuum Spin attack, it will finish the attack before beginning its defeat animation. However the player cannot be KO'd in this state, as the blastzones cease to exist the instant Duon's health is fully depleted.
