Duon (デュオン,Duon) is the sixthboss encountered inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl'sAdventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. It does not hail from any particular series and is unique toSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. Duon was created from severalShadow Bugs that had gathered into a single powerful entity.

Duon's name is derived from the Latin wordduo, a word meaningtwosome or a group of two, alluding to its dual design.

Boss description[edit]

Duon is a two-sided robotic entity situated on a set of wheels; one of its sides is pink and has a cannon atop that head and a pair of smaller cannons on its arms and the other is blue with a pair of blades on that side's arms and a larger and curved blade atop its head. Both sides have shoulder exhaust pipes which missiles (associated with its pink side) or mines (associated with its blue side) can be fired from. Duon rotates one 180 degrees to change its attack strategy. The faces of its wheels bear a representation of theyin and yang symbol. There is an invisible platform between Duon's halves, making it one of only two bosses that afighter can actually stand on, the other beingPorky Minch.

As a playable character[edit]

Main article:Duon (SSBB)

Like allBrawl bosses, Duon can be controlled inBoss Battles throughhacking. The start button will self-destruct it.

Role inThe Subspace Emissary[edit]

WhenSnake,Lucario andMeta Knight attempt to dispose of all thefalseMr. Game & Watches in theHalberd's control room, they fall onto the ship's deck and dissolve intoShadow Bugs, which form into Duon, a last resort to defend the Halberd. The monster is confronted by Snake, Lucario,Fox,Zelda/Sheik,Peach andFalco, while Meta Knight stays behind to retake his ship. The boss battle makes up the entirety of theBattleship Halberd Bridge level. After Duon is vanquished, it leaves behind the real Mr. Game & Watch, who joins the group.

Duon later reappears inThe Great Maze and is refought by the playable characters.

Moveset[edit]

Like all bosses Duon is controllable with hacks inBoss Battles. The start button self-destructs any boss, while usingGrapple Beam resets them to AI control.

MoveInputDescriptionSide
ADuon bashes its head forward with high speed and immense knockback. Knockback can be both vertical and angled, depending on how it lands; if the player stands on Duon, the hit always lands. In general this move is swift and unpredictable, but suffers from a very shortrange.Blue
A+D-PadDuon jumps up high and crashes down, then grinds in place (prevents close-range attacks). The jump goes farther across the field on higher difficulties, which, ironically, makes it easier to avoid. If the player is hit by Duon in the fall, they will sustain enormous vertical knockback. Damage can reach 62%. If the player stands on Duon during this move, they will be inflicted vertical knockback with high KO power just before the jump lands. Being hit while midair also increases the KO potential. Both
Rotating Attack (回転攻撃)A+D-PadDuon spins around with a very strongvacuum effect (although the range is quite short). It is extremely difficult for the player to escape once they have been trapped by the spin. If all hits chain on Intense, the move will deal up to 84% damage in around three seconds. It also pushes down the character if they are below the ledge, effectively negating many non-tether-based recoveries and gimping many fighters. Also, if the player stands on Duon, they will always be sucked in by the attack, suffering the maximum damage and knockback. Both
Slash (斬りつけ)A+D-Pad/D-PadDuon readies its arms shaping a cross, then performs a sweeping attack that makes a large shockwave in front of it. The hit itself deals strong knockback. Damage is also very high, however the slash itself has a very low range. The red shockwave inflicts high knockback, but is not as strong. In Boss Battles, it won't KO until noticeably later, but is still powerful. Its hitbox is also very large.Blue
Bomb Drop (爆弾投下)BDuon launches several mines in the air. These can be detonated (but will not harm Duon) with vertical-based attacks, such asPikachu'sThunder or a chucked item. It is always followed by a "shared attack". The mines are quite difficult to avoid, despite being slow, but they are also one of Duon's weakest attacks, KOing at relatively high percentages (over 100% on the lower difficulties and around 75% on Intense). Knockback is perfectly vertical, while damage reaches around 30% for each hit on Intense. The higher the difficulty, the more mines are launched.Blue
Homing Missile (誘導ミサイル)B+D-PadDuon moves its non-weapon arm back to shoot four homing missiles. The missiles can be directed to hit Duon itself, inflicting very high damage. On lower difficulties in Boss Battles, all four missiles redirected to Duon can nearly KO the boss. The missiles can be detonated with vertical-ranged attacks or thrown items. They can damage Duon even if the explosion hits it. It is always followed by a "shared attack". The missiles are very powerful, inflicting up to 30% with enough power to KO under 50% on Intense difficulty. The higher the difficulty, the more accurate the homing is.Pink
Triple Beam (三連ビーム)B+D-PadDuon's head glows and then shoots three strong blue bolts that will pierce though everything (including the field and Duon, but they do not hurt itself) exceptPit'sMirror Shield. At higher difficulties they will break shields. They cannot be reflected or absorbed. Touching the blue sphere on Duon's head deals very high vertical knockback. The beams themselves are extremely powerful, being able to KO around 30% and inflicting high damages (up to 35%). The beams' high speed and piercing ability, as well as the unpredictable beginning, make this attack extremely dangerous.Pink
Rapid Fire (連射)B+D-PadDuon shoots pink lasers with a vertical-spread coverage. Can bereflected orabsorbed. It will aim higher and a little back if above or behind Duon. Each laser projectile (around twelve shots in a row) deals up to 30% and KOs around 60%.Pink
Rapid Fire (連射)B+D-PadDuon shoots pink lasers at the ground in the front. These lasers can be reflected or absorbed. Each laser projectile (around twelve shots in a row) deals up to 30% and KOs around 60%. This attack can be quite difficult to avoid on the higher difficulties.Pink
L/RDuon charges forward quickly. Wheels do damage while tilted after dash (max 18%). Knockback can be either vertical or angled, depending on how Duon lands and on what part of its body hits the player. It is possible to be hit only by side by touching Duon's head, which deals less damage (max 20%) and decent knockback, KOing around 70%. It might be used several times in a row with little pause in between, especially when Duon has lowhealth. Both
UnusableDuon turns around, switching active sides and dealing damage. Used after Mines or Missiles. The hit inflicts up to 18% and has decent knockback, enough to KO at 70%.Both
Triple Attack (3連攻撃)UnusableDuon slowly approaches and then slashes three times when within range. It will turn around before slashing if the character jumps over it. Each hit deals up to 14%, except the third that deals the double (max 28%). The last inflicts decent vertical knockback. This attack can be fast and very difficult to avoid.Blue

Like all bosses inBrawl, Duon gains an additional ×0.6 damage resistance modifier when fought in co-op mode, effectively gaining 67% more health. This modifier is applied whenever the second player is in-game, and is removed if the second player loses all theirstocks.

Trophy[edit]

Duon's trophy is obtained by using aTrophy Stand on it during the boss fight.

Spirit[edit]

Duon appears inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Advanced-classprimary spirit.

InAdventure Mode: World of Light, Duon is presumably one of the countless spirits captured byGaleem during his takeover of the universe. Duon's spirit is located in theBase sub-dungeon ofThe Light Realm.

Duon's Spirit Battle uses agiantIce Climbers puppet fighter starting off with aSuper Scope, referencing Duon's dual sides and the pink side's built-in laser blasters, and is fought on theHalberd stage's ship deck layout. During the battle, Shooting Type items will appear, further referencing the shooting attacks.

Trivia[edit]

  • Duon is the onlyboss that can hurt itself without the aid ofitems or areflector.
  • It is possible to stand on Duon, between the two heads, although this serves little practical application as Duon still has attacks that can hit the player in this position, while the space for the player to maneuver on is very limited.
  • Sonic'sHoming Attack will always home in on Duon's pink side.
  • The word "DUON" is hidden on its wheels. This can be more closely seen when examined as a trophy or when using mods that remove the ingame camera limitations.
  • If Duon is defeated while performing its Vacuum Spin attack, it will finish the attack before beginning its defeat animation. However the player cannot be KO'd in this state, as the blastzones cease to exist the instant Duon's health is fully depleted.
