TheDevil (デビル,Devil) (calledDemon on the British version of theSmash Bros. DOJO!!) is the main antagonist of the NES gameDevil World, developed byShigeru Miyamoto, which was released for the Japanese Famicom andPAL NES systems only.

Origin[edit]

Devil moving the walls inDevil World.

The Devil makes his debut as the main antagonist and main hazard inDevil World. He is based on theDevil, who appears in several religions as the personification of evil. In the game, he tries to thwart the efforts of the heroic dragonTamagon to destroy him and seal Devil World away for eternity. He appears in every non-bonus level at the top of the screen, pointing in various directions in order to make the walls of the current game area shift around the level, thus limiting the player's movement to a small window of the full maze. When a stage is cleared, the Devil recoils, turns into a bat and flies away.

InSuper Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

The Devil was mentioned in the description of the Tamagon trophy as "a large, winged demon". This trophy was only available legitimately in the Japanese version ofMelee.

InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

As anAssist Trophy[edit]

The Devil inBrawl.

When the Devil is summoned, he appears as a bat, flies to the top of the screen and turns into his humanoid form. He then starts pointing in various directions, accompanied by an 8-bit sound from his source game. This causes the screen to scroll in the opposite direction, effectively altering the offscreen boundaries of the stage. The effect is great enough that it can leave just a small section of a stage, e.g.Battlefield, remaining. When playing on thePirate Ship stage, it is also possible for the entire stage to be moved offscreen. This also allows for more camera control freedom when the game is paused. After a short while, the Devil disappears in a puff of smoke and the screen turns back to normal.

Trophy[edit]

TheNTSC version ofBrawl lists the game as "Japan Only" in error. The PAL version corrects this.

Devil's trophy inBrawl
Devil
A devil who wields serious power in Devil World. In the game, the devil floats above the maze and commands by pointing. When it gives orders, its cyclopean minions turn cranks that scroll the maze in different directions. When Tamagon, your character in the game, places all the stage's books into a hole, the devil turns into a bat and flies away. It's quite striking, no?

InSuper Smash Bros. 4[edit]

As an Assist Trophy[edit]

The Devil inSmash 4.

The Devil reprises his behavior fromBrawl.

However, when the Devil is summoned, certain moves such asFlip Jump can now connect with Devil[1], indicating that the Devil has a hurtbox, despite being immune to the effects of attacks.

Trophy[edit]

The Devil trophy appears in both versions. InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U it is part of theNESTrophy Box.

Devil
NTSCA devil who holds absolute authority in Devil World. When he appears, he'll fly into the sky as a bat and then transform into his devil form. He'll then begin to point frantically in different directions, scrolling the stage where he points. You're...not really helping things, buddy.
Famicom:Devil World (JP & EU)
PALA devil who appears to hold absolute power in Devil World. In bat form, it flies to its perch, then turns back into a devil and begins waving frantic orders to make the screen scroll all different ways. Considering that it's an Assist Trophy, it's not doing much in the way of assisting.

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

As an Assist Trophy[edit]

The Devil inUltimate.

The Devil appears as an Assist Trophy and reprises his behavior fromBrawl andSuper Smash Bros. 4.Training Mode describes his Assist Trophy with the following:Moves the stage in whichever direction he points. Can't be KO'd.

The Devil cannot be summoned inCustom Smash if the camera is set to "fixed". Summoning him in Training Mode under this setting will override the fixed camera, and will not return it to normal again when he disappears.

The Devil cannot be summoned in3D Land,75m,Balloon Fight,Big Blue,Boxing Ring,Bridge of Eldin,Brinstar,Brinstar Depths,Castle Siege,Cloud Sea of Alrest,Coliseum,Delfino Plaza,Distant Planet,Dream Land,Dream Land GB,Figure-8 Circuit,Flat Zone X,Gamer,Garreg Mach Monastery,Gaur Plain,Gerudo Valley,Golden Plains,Halberd,Hanenbow,Hyrule Castle,Jungle Japes,King of Fighters Stadium,Living Room,Luigi's Mansion,Mario Bros.,Mario Circuit,Mario Galaxy,Mementos,Midgar,Mishima Dojo,Moray Towers,Mushroomy Kingdom,Mute City SNES,New Donk City Hall,Norfair,Onett,Pac-Land,Palutena's Temple,Paper Mario,Peach's Castle,Pirate Ship,Port Town Aero Dive,Prism Tower,Rainbow Cruise,Reset Bomb Forest,Shadow Moses Island,Skyloft,Spear Pillar,Spirit Train,Spring Stadium,Summit,Super Mario Maker,Suzaku Castle,Temple,The Great Cave Offensive,Tomodachi Life,Tortimer Island,Unova Pokémon League,WarioWare, Inc.,Wii Fit Studio,Wrecking Crew,Wuhu Island, andYoshi's Island (Melee).

Spirit[edit]

The Devil also appears as an Advanced-classsupport spirit.

InAdventure Mode: World of Light, the Devil is presumably one of the countless spirits captured byGaleem during his takeover of the universe. The Devil's spirit is located in the 8-bit maze section ofThe Light Realm.

The Devil uses aRidley puppet fighter and is fought on the75m stage'sBattlefield form. Ridley is fought along with twoKirby puppet fighters representing the Medaman. During the battle, the Devil appears as a hostile Assist Trophy.

Trivia[edit]

  • Infor Wii U, if the Devil is summoned duringfixed camera mode, the stage won't be moved. If the player switches between Fixed and Normal camera inTraining mode at the right timing, the camera will be more zoomed in than normal[2], even more-so if Zoom is switched to first. In the3DS version, the camera-toggle in Training mode is disabled when Devil is summoned, and inUltimate, the camera turns normal when summoning Devil during fixed-camera in Training mode.
  • Devil cannot be summoned in 63 (69 including DLC) stages inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, making him the most limited Assist Trophy inUltimate.
  • When the Devil moves the stage, there are 2 distinct sound effects depending on whether he moves the stage horizontally or vertically. This is also the case inDevil World. However, inDevil World, the maze also has 2 different movement patterns, which are indicated by the sound effects, butSmash only uses the horizontal movement pattern.
