Chef (シェフ,Chef) isMr. Game & Watch'sneutral special move.

Overview[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, Mr. Game & Watch pulls out a frying pan with his left arm and tosses sausages, which fly erratically through the air. In later games, he can toss several different types of food. The projectiles do low amounts of damage, but they can be used to deter angled attacks. Up to five sausages can be tossed in one use of the move. The pan itself is somewhat more powerful, being asemi-spike withflame damage if the move is performed close to an opponent. If the player taps the special button repeatedly, the speed that Mr. Game & Watch tosses the food out will be increased.

The foods' trajectories are not truly random, and are instead chosen from five predetermined trajectories. Similar to the mechanics of Mr. Game & Watch'sJudge, a food will not be launched with the same trajectory as either of the two previous foods. This means that at any one time three of the five trajectories are possible. At the start of the match, the previous two trajectories are set to the second shortest and second longest trajectories. InUltimate, the food's trajectory can be almost completely controlled. With backwards input, the food flies slightly closer to Mr. Game & Watch; similarly, with forwards input, it flies lower and further away.

This move isspammable, and is decent forprojectilecamping, despite its small range. This is because the foods are thrown very close to each other, and at least one will hit opponents that try to approach Mr. Game & Watch and causehitstun. Even if the opponents do get through, they may be hit by the pan and sent backwards.

Normally, the food from Chef are physical projectiles, which means that they cannot beabsorbed. However inBrawl, ifKirby uses the move aftercopying Mr. Game & Watch, the food can be absorbed.

Changes across games / versions[edit]

Melee toBrawl[edit]

  • Change The attack may now launch shrimp, steak, or fish in addition to sausages. This has no practical effect on gameplay.
  • Change Mr. Game & Watch's mouth is now closed when performing the attack.

SSB4 toUltimate[edit]

  • Change Similarly to many of his other attacks, Mr Game & Watch takes the appearance of the character from the originalChef Game & Watch title.
  • Buff The move can now be angled high or low, in addition to the erratic trajectories with no directional input.

NTSC "Fling inedible food from a frying pan. Hold down the button to fling five foods in a row."

NTSC "Flings massive food (still inedible). Lower range and slower, but more powerful."

PAL "Flings massive food (still inedible) from a frying pan. Lower range and slower, but more powerful."

NTSC "Quickly flings mini bits of food from a frying pan. Lower attack power but longer range."

PAL "Quickly flings mini bits of food from a frying pan. Low attack power, but long range."

  1. Chef: Default.
  2. XXL Chef: The food is larger and causes more damage, but moves slower. Can fire only one piece of food at a time. Notably, unlike the default, the type of food affects the damage and knockback dealt: shrimp and fish deal 7%, with fish dealing very little knockback; steak deals 8%; and sausage deals 9% damage, being the only food with reasonable KO potential.
  3. Short-Order Chef (known asFast-Food Chef in thePAL version): The food moves faster, but causes less damage: shrimp and fish deal 1%, steak deals 1.5%, and sausage deals 2%. Only fires up to three pieces of food at once. Most deal weak diagonal knockback as opposed to mostly vertical knockback, while fish deals no knockback or hitlag.

Origin[edit]

A game ofChef.

Chef is aGame & Watch that released on September 4, 1981 as part of the Wide Screen series. The player takes on the role of a chef cooking various foods by flipping them with his frying pan. The player has to keep all the food airborne, lest it fall on the floor and either eaten by an awaiting mouse or be speared on a fork by a perched cat. To do this, the player flips it back upward with a frying pan, earning one point as a result. The player has three lives at the start of the game, and loses one life each time a food item hits the ground.
