ABucculus (ブチュルス,Bucculus) is an enemy inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl'sAdventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary that first appears atThe Lake.
Enemy description[edit]
A Bucculus appears plant-like with large, red, spike-covered lips and a purple sack on its back called a "poison zone" that resembles a strawberry. It hides deep in the ground, with only its lips showing.
It will be first seen buried in the ground with only its lips being shown: if the player goes near it, it will pop up and attempt to stick to them. Walking over it makes it likely to stick to the player, though this can be avoided by jumping over it or getting close enough to trigger it and preempt an attack, and most characters can run over it as well. When they jump out, they have a deceptively long-lasting hitbox, with decent reach above them, especially in later levels, so the player must jump clean over them. Once stuck, the Bucculus will attack by kissing the player repeatedly to deal damage, filling up its "poison zone".
If a Bucculus misses its grab attack, it will bounce around and plant itself again after a few seconds. If a Bucculus with a filled poison zone is killed, it will most likely drop aMaxim Tomato, but it could occasionally dropFood otherwise. The player does not need to weaken an "empty" Bucculus to turn it into atrophy with atrophy stand, since its base health is always very low (even on Intense).
Although the player is unable to move with a stuck Bucculus on them, they canbutton mash to make the Bucculus break away. Bucculus will then run and try to plant itself again in the ground. A Bucculus will naturally break away after three hits. It will do a small amount of damage when it is popped off, regardless of if the player mashes or it does so naturally.
Name origin[edit]
Bucculus's name is aportmanteau of the wordsbuccal, an adjective referring to the cheek or mouth, andsuccubus, with its signature attack referencing their portrayal in media as beings which suck the lifeforce out of their victims.

Trophy[edit]
- Bucculus
- ASubspace Army enemy found firmly planted in the ground, with only its lips showing. These lips, by the way, are covered with spikes that stick in its victim to... (Get this!)...suck out vitality. Basically, this results in serious damage. The torso area has a poison zone where it stores vitality. The Bucculus not only looks offensive--boy, it's rotten to the core.

Trivia[edit]
- When a Bucculus sucks a character'svitality, it makes aslashing sound and animation.
- On lower difficulties, players can heal themselves with a Bucculus by letting it sap their health for a bit and then knocking it out to receive a Maxim Tomato, potentially allowing the player heal for more than they received.
- Bucculus attacks in a similar way toLeap, an enemy fromKirby & The Amazing Mirror. The differences are that Bucculus inflicts more damage and it resides underground rather than in the air.
- InSubspace (Part II), the translucent terrain allows the player to see the body of a Bucculus that is still buried. The same happens inThe Great Maze.
