Arceus (アルセウス,Arceus) is a creature from thePokémon series.
Origin[edit]
Arceus is aMythical Pokémon introduced inGeneration IV, and is listed at #493 as the final Pokémon in that generation's National Pokédex, being categorized as the "Alpha Pokémon". In the Sinnoh mythos, it is considered the universe's creator, and the master of the generation's two legendary trios. By holding a matchingPlate item, it can change its type from Normal to any other type in the game. Its signature move isJudgment, an attack which changes its type to match Arceus's current type. Arceus played a major role inPokémon Legends: Arceus.
Gravity is a non-damaging Psychic-type move introduced in Generation IV. When used, it applies a status effect to the battlefield for 5 turns, grounding every Pokémon on the field: this lowers the evasion of all Pokémon by two stages, removes any immunity to Ground-type moves and makes some moves likeHigh Jump Kick impossible to perform. Arceus learns Gravity at level 10, but since every legitimately available Arceus thus far was only obtainable at much higher levels, Arceus requires aMove Reminder orMove Tutor to learn the move.
InSuper Smash Bros. 4[edit]
As a Poké Ball Pokémon[edit]
Arceus appears as aPoké Ball and aMaster Ball summon. When summoned, it produces a large shockwave that acts as a powerful long-rangemeteor smash. It does so three times, with a short delay between each use, before disappearing. Only airborne fighters will be hit; grounded fighters are not affected. It does not cause damage, but it possesses very high base knockback, which is very likely to KO any off-stage opponent. However, opponents can potentiallyDI towards a stage wall, allowing them totech and survive. Thelaunch rate can affect how powerful the attack is, as can opponent's percent, but only slightly as the move's knockback growth rate is very slow due to the move not dealing damage.
When Arceus is out,CPUs will prefer to stay grounded. If they are on a platform far away from other fighters, they will remain there, spamming attacks.
Arceus' attack uses a special hitbox flag which causes it to hit everywhere regardless of the hitbox's radius, even if the fighter several screen-widths away. The only exception to this is onJungle Hijinxs when the fighter is on a different plane than Arceus.
Arceus has a spawn chance of12/975 from Poké Balls and40/690 from Master Balls. It cannot be summoned on the following stages in a standard versus match (applies to both games and only the base form unless noted otherwise):

Trivia[edit]
- The base stats of the Arceus spirit are both 2006, which is the yearPokémon Diamond and Pearl were released in Japan.
- The attack script for Arceus' attack contains a redundant frame timer set for frame 4 of the attack animation. Due to it being after a frame timer for frame 52, it is ignored due to the game reading scripts in order, and frame 4 having already passed. It is possible that this was intended to be a wait timer, but nothing is specified for this frame either way. Oddly, it still appears inUltimate, even though the script was changed to add a frame timer on frame 77 to remove the attack's hitbox, which is placed after the frame 4 timer.
