At the Southern Research Station, teams of research foresters, physicists, ecologists, meteorologists, and other experts are developing tools for managing prescribed fire safely and applying it most effectively. We also study how fire affects forests, fuels, wildlife, and forested watersheds.

The FIA program supports American prosperity and opportunity in rural communities through economic growth of the forest industry. FIA is statutorily mandated to report on status and trends of America’s forest resources, its owners, and forest products mills that create value for consumers.
