State Champs (formed in 2010) is an American east-coat band, known for their brand of emotive pop punk, hailing from Albany, New York, U.S.
Originally formed of lead guitarist Tyler Szalkowski and lead singer Derek DiScanio in upstate New York, guitarist Tony Diaz, bassist William Goodermote, and drummer Evan Ambrosia were later added to complete the line up. Soon after the band’s founding, State Champs issued a untitled five-track EP in 2010, followed by their second EP “Apparently, I’m Nothing” in January 2011. The latter release and supporting performances caught the attention of Pure Noise Records who subsequently signed the band in April 2012. State Champs’ label debut came in September of that year with the 7” “Overslept”, produced by Jay Maas. Influenced by the pioneers of the melodic punk genre Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, and Story So Far, the 7” encapsulates DiScanio’s similarly soaring vocals and emotive lyrics.
State Champs’ debut album “The Finer Things” arrived in October 2013, debuting at No. Two on Billboard Heatseekers Chart. Produced by Sam Pura and former New Found Glory guitarist Steve Klein, the album was supported by a North American tour alongside Motion City Soundtrack and Bayside. 2014 brought more touring for the band this time alongside We Are The In Crowd, William Becket, and Set It Off in the U.S., and The Wonder Years and A Loss for Words in the UK and mainland Europe. The EP “The Acoustic Things” was released in 2014 once again on Pure Noise Records, and debuted at No. 112 on the Billboard 200. State Champs subsequently performed as a part of the 2014 Vans Warped Tour, and co-headlined the 2014 Pure Noise Records tour.

I actually took time off work to see the opening band Like Pacific, a band I've heard about for almost year now and very grateful that I finally had a chance to see them live and they didn't disappoint. The next band that played was Knuckle Puck which I had very little exposure to I listened to their debut album a couple weeks before the show just to get a feel for them and I liked it, didn't love, wanted to give them another shot, but unfortunately didn't get around to it before the show, but they blew me away live, most of the crowd seemed really into them and they sounded amazing and on point, dare I say the MVPs of the night, I see a bright future them and won't be surprised to see them headlining a place like Webster hall very soon.
After the opening acts it was time for the main event. First it was Neck Deep the UK band that I did get into the months leading up to the show and I was really pleased with setlist the played with just couple omitted songs that would've liked to hear most of the setlist where great songs to hear live. On a side note near the end of the set I stepped out the main floor after being a bit winded and went to the bar to get water, I rarely ever buy anything at venues because of the overpriced nature of all items, but I thought water would be a little more reasonable priced, maybe 2, 3 dollars (still overpriced but reasonable) instead it was 5 dollars for water, which I was taken a bit backed by, I payed it, because I really needed it, but next time I'm going to look for a fountain or something. Neck Deep finished their set in on high note and set a great tone for State Champs.
So finally State Champs took the stage and from the the opening song to the closing encore the band, the crowd never gave up the same energy and momentum lasted throughout, I saw them about five months opening up for The Wonder Years/Motion City Soundtrack and they almost stole the show that night and where the MVPs of that show and to see them headline and close the show really showed their full talent on display as a great live band, one of the best going right now.
All and all great show every band delivered and will be on look out next time any of these bands are around again.

State Champs is a pretty clever name, as they’re already champs in that respect and all they have to do is live up to the name with anything that they release. Their full-length album that they released last year, entitled “The Finer Things” debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, so I guess they’re half way there, living up to their name.
When they walk on stage they waste no time in launching straight into works from this album, which creates pop punk mayhem amongst this audience with people singing along like the whole album is their national anthem, some audience members around me have even learned the harmonies. The atmosphere is electric with people jumping up and down throughout the set. Front man, Derek Discanio commands the crowd from start to finish, involving this crowd in everything that they do this evening, songs such as “Prepare to be Noticed” and “Nothing’s Wrong” elevating this audience to new heights.
Let me start by saying I drove up from Woodbridge, VA to see them. That was only my second time at the Sounf Stage and State Champs killed it. I loved that show so much. My glasses broke, I have a bruised nose and welt on my head from all the crowd surfers. I'm really short, I was stuck between tall people and pushed to the front. But i was raight there in front of Derek Discanio and that was the coolest thing. I had such a rad time. They really know how to put on a show and their live sound is something I haven't heard since the last classic punk show I went to. If I could I'd drive farther north to see them again. I hope they come back to the area again soon. That show was so rad. I had the best time. Thank you State Champs for starting my week off right.
Best show I've ever been too! Don't sleep on these bands!Neck deep will always go hard , and honestly wasn't expecting state champs to be ass good as they were. I definitely recommend checking out Like Pacific if you haven't already! They were so great but sad I only knew one song by them. Also you already know knuckle puck went hard as hell.
Always a great band; can't tell you a time when energy isn't built from anticipation and everyone goes apeshit wild when State Champs starts playing.
Great band.
Great venue to play at, The Regency Ballroom San Francisco, is perfect for rock of any sub-genre.
Life is amazing, eat a pizza.
I absolutely adored my first concert. The crowd was exactly the right size; enough to rock out but not too much so that I couldn't make my way to the front of the stage. I also got to meet Chrissy, the leader singer of my favorite band at the place; Against the Current.
okay this was gonna be my first state champs concert but unfortunately i did not get to attend but i bet they were amazing, from what i saw on twitter and instagram it looked incredible. I hope they come back to Toronto so I can see them live
Absolutely out of this world awesome, I absolutely love State Champs and as it is been following them now for 3 years. Great venue and even better music. Highly recommend both venue and bands to anyone. Brilliant night away in Glasgow too.
This was such a good show! The crowd was wild and made the Xperia center a lot more enjoyable.
All the band's before state Champs were good and made the crowd excited for state Champs and it was overall a great show.
One to remember.
