What is SATREPS-EARTH project?

Aquatic plants (water hyacinth) overgrown in Lake Tana, Ethiopia have been causing environmental pollution and economic loss due to invasion of exotic species and nutrients inflow caused by the recent population growth. By researching and developing production process of valuable products (such as biogas, anaerobic digestion effluent, biochar, microalgae, vegetables, and crops) utilizing these aquatic plants properly managed and harvested by using ICT such as remote sensing technology, we aim to build a modern version of “African Satoumi” recycling society to achieve both environmental conservation and economic growth.
