The Jetsons, season one

Philippa Hawker andReviewer

The Jetsons were toThe Flintstones asFuturama was toThe Simpsons: an animated series, set in the future, that followed in the footsteps of an enormously successful precursor.

The Jetsons, however, stuck closely to its forerunner's formula, re-tooling the prehistoric sitcom for the space-age and packing the script with futuristic gadgets to deal with familiar problems.

An appealing example that opens every episode: the car that turns into a briefcase once George Jetson has dropped off the family at their regular destinations and gone to work at Spacely Space Sprockets.

LikeFuturama, the show was cut off in its prime, lasting only one season - although it was revived 20 years later and new episodes were made. It's an amiable show that's worth a second viewing: this four-disc set has all 24 first-season episodes and a few extras.

Janet Waldo, the voice of Judy Jetson, provides a perky commentary but the brief featurettes are fairly uninspired.
